eco spugne - eco sponges

mi considero una piuttosto ecologica che usa praticamente tutto quello che si può di riutilizzabile invece dell'usa e getta. ma ogni tanto trovo qualche idea nuova. è stato così quando ho letto delle "riciclispugne" di sibia.
i consider myself a pretty ecological person that uses pretty much everything re-usable instead of disposable as possible. but every so often i find some new idea. that's how it was when i read about sibia's recycled sponges.

ha fatto dei rettangoli/quadrati con due strati di maglione infeltrito (per i piatti) o di spugna di asciugamani recuperati (per il bagno). non ho resistito e le ho fatte anch'io, ma la seconda versione in un altro modo completamente.
she made rectangles/squares with two layers of felted wool sweaters (for washing dishes) or of recuperated bath towels (for the bathroom). i couldn't resist and made some too, but the second type in a totally different way.

iniziamo con quelle di lana infeltrita. si può usare la stoffa degli indumenti di lana che si infeltriscono durante il lavaggio per tante cose (ad esempio per i pannolini lavabili e gli assorbenti lavabili, su cui sto facendo sperimenti con la lana), ma avevo tre vestitini/gonne di mia figlia che avevo distrutto per sbaglio in lavatrice. i pezzi erano troppo piccoli per quello che mi servivano, quindi li ho usati per le spugne. per prima questo vestito bianco. ho tolto la cerniera da riutilizzare in un altro momento e ho ricavato ben quattro spugne.
let's start with the felted wool ones. you can use the fabric from wool clothes that have felted up during the wash for loads of things (for example, for cloth diapers and menstrual pads, with which i'm currently experimenting with wool), but i had three of my daughter's dresses/skirts that i'd accidentally shrunk in the washing machine. the pieces were too small to use for other things i wanted, so i used them for the sponges. my first was this white dress. i took out the zipper for future use and them made four sponges.

per utilizzare al meglio la stoffa, ho fatto delle forme irregolari, piegandola per fare due strati, facendo un cerchio per appenderle, e facendo delle cuciture a zig-zag sia per chiudere i lati che nel centro per tenere i due strati meglio insieme.
i made irregular shapes to better use up the fabric, folding it to make two layers, adding a little hanging loop, and doing a zig-zag stitch both to close up the sides and in the middle to keep it all together better.

mi sono trovata molto bene ad usarle. certo, non si fanno una bella schiuma come quelli che si comprano, ma come ha consigliato sibia, metto il sapone dentro una pentola da lavare e lavo tutto così, senza mettere il sapone direttamente sulla spugna. sono leggermente abrasive, perfette per le padelle anti-aderenti e crostazioni non troppo dure. quando sono sporchi, si lavano in lavatrice insieme agli asciugamani. mi piacciono molto anche nel bagno per pulire il lavello e la vasca con un po' di bicarbonato. quindi ne ho fatte altre da questi altri indumenti, ricavando...
i was pretty happy using them. sure, they don't foam up like the ones you buy, but as sibia advised, i put the dish liquid in a pot that needs washing and then wash everything from there, without putting the soap directly on the sponge. they're slightly rough, perfect for anti-stick pans and slightly hard crusted-on gunk. when they're dirty, just throw them in the washing machine with towels and stuff. i also really like them for washing the bathroom sink and tub with a bit of baking soda. so i made some more from these sadly shrunken garments, giving birth to...

ho deciso di fare la versione in spugna, pure. avevo finalmente convito mio marito di togliere dal suo cassetto i calzini che non usava mai e, tra non so quanti calzini, sono usciti circa otto paia di fantasmini in cotone piuttosto buono/doppio (quelli per lo sport). e ho deciso di usarli per fare delle spugne-guanti.
i also decided to make the terry version. i'd finally convinced my husband to remove the masses of socks from his sock drawer that he never uses and, amongst god knows how many discarded socks there were around eight pairs of ankle socks in relatively thick cotton (you know, the sporty type). so i decided to use them to make sponge-mittens.

li ho tagliati al tallone per lasciare solo la parte piatta e li ho inseriti uno dentro l'altro. in questa foto ce ne sono quattro, in altri ne ho messi tre. ma alla fine consiglierei solo due perché si mettono una vita ad asciugare e dopo il lavaggio sono difficile da rimettere di nuovo tutti dentro quello più esterno. ho fatto sempre anelli da appendere e ho cucito i bordi con la macchina taglia e cuci (ma si può benissimo fare con una macchina normale).
i cut them at the heel so as to use just the flat part and slipped one inside another. in this picture you can see there are four socks, though for others i used just three. however in the end i'd suggest using just two because they take ages to dry and it's hard to slip them back inside each other after washing. again, i made hanging loops and i sewed the edges all together with the overlock machine (but you can use a regular sewing machine, too).

la mia idea era di infilare le mani dentro per lavare i piatti, ma alla fine non è comodissimo così. ma le uso per lavare il tavolo, la cucina e le pareti della vasca da bagno. figuratevi, anche mio marito ha detto che funzionano proprio bene! ma poi ho deciso di aprirne qualcuno per una spugna più normale...
my idea was to slip your hands in to wash dishes, but in the end they're not super comfy like that. but i like them for washing the table, counters and bathtub walls. go figure, even my husband said they work really well! but then i decided to open a few to make a more normal sponge...

... e vanno benissimo così! (anche meglio, secondo me) avevo appena rifatto i bordi con la macchina taglia e cuci quando ho scattato questa foto, perciò i bordi sono così ondulati. comunque, del vestitino viola/rosa sono rimaste solo le maniche perché non erano di lana e quindi non si sono infeltriti, i bottoni e qualche strisciolina di lana viola. ma mica li ho buttati, oh no! vi faccio vedere presto che fine hanno fatto! (e ho anche altri eco-spugne in mente che devo ancora fare. fra presto... spero!)
...and they're great like this! (even better, actually) i'd just resewn the edges with the overlocker when i took this picture, which is why the edges are all wavy. anyway, all that was left of the purple/fuschia dress were the sleeves because they were wool so didn't felt, the buttons and a few strips of purple wool. but i didn't throw them out, oh no! i'll show you soon what i did with them! (and i also have some other eco-sponges brewing in my head that i still have to make. soon... i hope!)
