Fare Thee Well Grateful Dead: The Last Waltz

Tutto è stato detto, tutto è stato fatto. Oppure no? È sorprendente che negli anni dieci a qualcuno riesca ancora di inventare uno spettacolo inedito. Domenica 5 luglio i Grateful Dead terranno a Chicago l’ultimo show del loro brevissimo Fare Thee Well tour, il tour d’addio, a chiusura di cinquant’anni di carriera e di show in cui si sono conquistati il titolo di American Band per eccellenza.
Per tanta e tale occasione i posti a sedere del Soldier Field di Chicago sembravano pochi. Perché non invitare a partecipare all’evento tutto il globo terracqueo? Così quella sera (con qualche variazione legata al fuso orario) i cinema delle città di tutto il mondo, collegati in streaming, trasmetteranno il concerto, per un pubblico di qualche milione di spettatori, anzi, di dead-heads.

Bello: pensate, se il sistema prende piede, come sarà vedersi al cinema in diretta i grandi eventi musicali americani...
I Grateful Dead sono stati la più grande band “Americana", persino più di The Band, Allman Brothers Band, Little Feat. In molti ci aggiungerebbero The Byrds, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Blasters, Los Lobos, DMB, Black Crowes... La differenza l’hanno fatta la data di inizio e tutti gli anni spesi a suonare su e giù per gli States...
In realtà i Grateful Dead non ci sono più da vent'anni, cioè dal 9 luglio 1995, quando scesero dallo stesso palco a Chicago, ignari che da lì ad un mese la grande mietitrice (tanto corteggiata sulle loro copertine) si sarebbe presa Jerry Garcia.
Un destino, quello di perdere il leader, condiviso dalle altre grandi band, come Allman Brothers con Duane, e Little Feat con Lowell George (addirittura The Band è stata decimata).
Per anni i membri rimasti hanno continuato a suonare, prima come The Other Ones e poi come The Dead. In occasione dei 50 anni dal primo show, hanno deciso di dare una chiusura ufficiale alla loro leggenda, con un tour d’addio che si conclude proprio a Chicago, vent’anni dopo l’ultimo spettacolo con Garcia. Assieme ai membri originali Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann, Phil Lesh e Bob Weir, il ruolo di Garcia viene affidato a Terry Anastasio, il leader (oggi in verità un po' appannato) dei Phish.
Questa è la lettera aperta ai fan: 
"Dear Heads,

Although none of us knew it when we walked off the stage at Soldier Field on July 9, 1995, the Grateful Dead's long strange trip ended in Chicago that night. As you are aware, twenty years later, we're returning to Chicago to properly say Fare Thee Well.

But every good ending must start with a beginning. For us, it all began fifty years ago when we grabbed a bunch of instruments off the walls of a music store in Palo Alto California and began banging away on them in the back room, at night after the store had closed for the day.

Since we made the decision to go back to Chicago to say our final goodbye, it has become clear to us that we first need to return to our beginnings, where we first said hello – to each other and to all of you.

And so it is that we have decided to plug in for two additional shows on June 27 and 28 at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California – just a dozen miles south of where Dana Morgan's Music Store once stood. At Levi's– as at Soldier Field – we will have the pleasure of being joined by Trey Anastasio, Bruce Hornsby and Jeff Chimenti.

Ours wasn't just a long, strange trip – it was a VERY long, VERY strange trip. We weren't sure what it was going to be like to put a punctuation mark on the end of it. None of us anticipated the overwhelming outpouring of love and interest following our initial announcement of the shows at Soldier Field, and we were blown away by the response.

We have tried to do the right thing wherever we could for the Chicago shows by honoring the roots of where we came from, while dealing with the realities of the current times. But that's hardly comforting when you're shit outta luck for tickets and your only option is inflated prices on secondary ticketing websites. That would piss us off too.

From the moment these shows were first talked about, we have been thinking about what we can do to honor the roots of our Deadhead experience, even in the face of changing technologies. (Remember: Ticketmaster didn't even go online until we got out of the game.) These shows were always intended as an expression of our gratitude, to both the music and the fans, so it's important that we get things as right as we can.

We have always been proud of our in-house mail order ticketing process, and the phenomenal way our fans have built a tradition out of turning a standard envelope into a frame-worthy piece of art. Some 60,000 mail order tickets were issued for the Soldier Field shows by the good folks at Grateful Dead Ticket Sales – yet we were still crushed to see how many of your beautifully designed envelopes did not get tickets.

For shows of this magnitude, it's impossible to eliminate every scalper. However, we offer you this: Working with our partners, we are using an online ticketing platform for the Levi's shows that will help ensure that the tickets for these shows will get into the right hands, the hands of our true fans. We believe that this process is the best way to give each of you an equal opportunity to obtain tickets at the most affordable possible prices. We will not be adding any more Fare Thee Well performances. The three Chicago shows will still be our final stand. We decided to add these two Santa Clara shows to enable more of our fans to celebrate with us one more time. But this is it.

We love you guys more than words can tell, and hope to see you in the Bay Area or Chicago. If you can't make it to the shows, we are working on ways for you to still experience our Fare Thee Well, from wherever you might be. Stay tuned for those details.

Per chi non mastica l’inglese, la parte principale dell’annuncio suona così:

"Cari Heads, 

anche se nessuno di noi lo sapeva quando siamo scesi dal palco del Soldier Field il 9 luglio del 95, il lungo e strano viaggio dei Grateful Dead finiva a Chicago quella notte. Come già sapete, vent’anni dopo stiamo tornando a Chicago per dare un addio come si deve. 

Ma ogni buona fine deve cominciare con un inizio. Per noi tutto è cominciato cinquant’anni fa quando abbiamo preso un mucchio di strumenti dalle pareti di un negozio di musica a Palo Alto in California e abbiamo cominciato a batterci su nella stanza di dietro, dopo che la chiusura del negozio. 
Dal momento che abbiamo preso la decisione di tornare a Chicago per dare il nostro addio definitivo, è diventato chiaro che dovevamo tornare ai nostri inizi, quando ci siamo detti ciao l’un l’altro, e a tutti voi.

Abbiamo così deciso di aggiungere due show, al Levi’s Stadium a Santa Clara in California, una dozzina di miglia a sud di dov’era una volta quel negozio di musica di Dana Morgan. 
Sia al Levi’s che al Soldier Field avremo il piacere di avere con noi Trey Anastasio, Bruce Hornsby e Jeff Chimenti. 

Il nostro non è stato soltanto un lungo e strano viaggio: è stato un viaggio molto lungo e molto strano. Non sapevamo come sarebbe stato metterne il punto finale. Nessuno di noi potevi immaginare la quantità di amore e di interesse che il nostro annuncio iniziale dei concerti avrebbe provocato, e siamo assolutamente storditi dalla vostra risposta...

...vi amiamo tutti più di quanto le parole possono dire e speriamo di vedervi nella Bay Area o a Chicago. Se non ce la farete ad esserci, stiamo lavorando su un modo perché possiate partecipare ugualmente ovunque voi siate.

Per prepararmi degnamente alla serata, ho già tirato fuori dagli scaffali la scatola con i loro dischi. Quelli dal vivo sono innumerevoli, molti di più di quanti io ne abbia ascoltati. Se a qualcuno può servire un suggerimento, i miei preferiti sono quattro:
Live Dead (1969, testimonianza del periodo psichedelico di Haight Ashbury)
England ’72 / Europe ’72 (il tour europeo)
Egypt 1978 (ipnotico, spaziale)
Reckoning (1980, acustico)

I Dead hanno sempre dato il loro meglio in concerto. Ma se qualcuno proprio ci tenesse ad ascoltarli in studio, i dischi consigliati sono semplicemente:
