Fashion, Art and Design. Artist textiles: Picasso to Warhol.
For someone like me who loves fashion and history of art, being in a museum and in an exhibition in which the two worlds mix, collaborate and create 'beauty within the beauty', - art in fashion and the reverse -, was a really exciting, inspiring experience and a joy for my eyes fabric after fabric, dress after dress. I'm talking about the exhibition ' ARTSTS TEXTILES: Picasso to Warhol' at the Fashion textile Museum till May the 17th - take note if you're going to London. The exhibition celebrate the 'hand in hand' path that artists, textile enterpreneurs and designers did together between the 1940' and the 1960', with names such as Matisse, Dali', Picasso, Chagall, Miro' and Warhol, with the aim both to make art democratic, give credibility through art to the textile production and give it a boost after the Second World War. I'm not a professional art critic nor a fashion critic with years of experience, so I'll let the pictures do the talking and I'll give you some basic info about them and some personal impressions. The main reason for the commercial success and the beauty of the textiles shown is the quality of the grafic line of the artists involved; be it the quickt brush strokes of Picasso or the vivid colours and the defined lines of Warhol. In both cases their style works really well with being printed and repeated over and over as their lines have a fantastic design quality to them.SURREAL THINGS: Dali' and Marcel VertesDali' - Ballerina headscarfFashion, Art and Design.  MODERN MASTERS - Picasso, Chagall, Miro'
Vedere il lavoro di Picasso non su tela ed in cornice ma su un tessuto o un manichino fa un effetto strano, all'inizio, poi, dopo un po' ci sis ente estremamente fortunati nel poter vedere da vicino la sua arte calata nel mondo reale e gli si e' grati per averlo fatto.------------------Just like Dali' ten years earlier, Picasso in the mid-50' agreed to create some prints of the American company Fuller Fabrics and the project 'Modern Masters', also called 'Art by the Yard' with the aim to sell good quality fabrics for a low cost price - $1.50-$2 per yard -; all of it link basically linked to its Communist beliefs. After him other artists such as Chagall and Miro' followed his example.I have to say that to see Picasso's work not on canvas or framed but on fabric and on a manequin is a rather weird experience at first; after while though you feel quite lucky to be bale to see his art so close up and glad that he got involved.

PIONEERS OF POP- Warhol & Zandra Rhodes
The Pop Art section was with no doubt my favourite. I've always had a soft spot for the pop world and Pop Art in the first place.Differently from the weird fact of seeing Picasso on fabric, we all are used to the idea of seeing Warhol's hand on everyday objects and it was utterly fun to see his graphic design works on textiles and dresses. Colours, colour, colours and fun. His British counterpart, Zandra Rhodes, was there too. She's the founder of the Fashion Textile Museum and her style mixes and blurres fashion and design, pop and tribal and aborigenal art in an eclectic and vibrant mix.

Punto d'orgoglio poi riconoscere ad occhio un artista e sapere gia' chi e' e che cosa ha fatto!------------------------An old acquaintance 'pop' up quickly in the exhibition: Edoardo Paolozzi, whose exhibition on his collages and other works I visited back in September 2013 in Chichester. Interesting, again, the effort that he made to make art accessible to anybody and let it get in people's houses through textile for furnishings and clothing. Quite proud to be able to recognise an artist and know things about him at first glance!

STEINBERG and MORE PICASSO
The exhibition finished with the funny illustration of Saul Steinberg that from the pages of the New York Times lept on textiles betweent he '40 and the '60 and two projects of designs that saw Picasso included again in the '60 that have come to light only recently.

That, personally, this exhibition gave me lot of knowledge on a topic I didn't really know and at the same time gave joy to my eyes and heart; then now that I know how art and design have collaborated in the past I do have a better perspective and understanding on what's to come on the catwalk these upcoming/future Fashion Week/capsule collections/trends etc...
