Guess what?

Ieri camminavo per strada e mi è passata accanto una donna con il burqa, qui a Londra capita molto spesso. Non riuscivo a vedere niente di lei, tutto era celato: le mani, il viso, gli occhi coperti da una retina sottile, quel tanto che basta per permetterle di vedere dove sta andando. Non c'era nulla di lei che poteva mostrare al mondo, era un segreto, un mistero, una macchia nera che copriva la sua libertà di espressione. Poi, ho sentito il suo profumo: un misto di patchouli e incenso, qualcosa di molto mediorientale, deciso, personale. Parlava di lei. Raccontava i suoi pensieri, le sue emozioni, le sue grida silenziose - in un modo sottile, discreto, che si può notare solo se si presta molta attenzione - ma c'era.  E ho pensato che una donna ha mille risorse, riesce sempre a trovare un modo per sentirsi attraente, per esprimere la sua personalità, per raccontare la sua storia - anche quando la privano di tutto il resto. E mi si è scaldato il cuore, per un po'.

Yesterday I was walking down the street and a woman wearing a burqa passed me by, it's pretty common here in London. I couldn't see anything of her, everything was hidden: her hands, her face, her eyes covered by a thin net, just enough to allow her to see where she's going. There was nothing of her that she could show to the world, it was a secret, a mistery, a black blur covering her freedom of express herself. Then, I smelled her perfume: a mix of patchouli and incense, something bold, personal, very Middle East. It said a lot about her. It was telling her thoughts, her emotions, her noiseless screams - in a very slight, decent way, you can notice it only if you pay a lot of attention - but it was there. And I tought that a woman got tons of means, she can always find a way to feel attractive, to express her personality, to tell her story - even when they take away everything from her. And my heart melted, for a while.
