Halloween.

In the UK, America and Canada everybody knows and celebrates Halloween, but in Italy, a Catholic country, the pagan festival is not as known (even though lately it's getting bigger there too thanks to media's help).

Nel Regno Unito, America e Canada tutto conoscono e festeggiano Halloween, ma in Italia, paese cattolico, questa festa pagana resta poco nota (anche se si sta diffondendo sempre di piu', specie grazie all'influenza dei media.Being The Girlfriend always very curious, she did some research and found out some very interesting things about Halloween's origins you might also be interested in! Dato che la Girfriend e' un tipo curioso, ha fatto delle ricerche e scoperto alcune cose interessanti riguardo alle origini di Halloween, cose che anche voi potreste trovare interessanti!First she was thrilled in finding out that some people think Halloween originates from the Roman feast "Parentalia" a religious festival mainly celebrated in the intimacy of the households and lasting 9 days, during which families used to bring flowers and other sacred offerings to the tombs of their family ancestors.All'inizio si e' emozionata nello scoprire che la festa di Halloween potrebbe essere collegata all' antica festa Romana detta "Parentalia", una festa religiosa celebrata nell'intimita' domestica e della durata di 9 giorni, durante i quali le famiglie erano solite portare fiori o altre offerte sacre alle tombe dei loro cari defunti. So it looked like there could be a connection between the Romans (The Girlfriend's ancestors) and Halloween, but then the truth was a bit disappointing."Parentalia" is just what Italian people still celebrate today with the name of "Ognissanti" (All saints' day) on November the 1st, when they visit the tombs of their dead relatives and bring flowers to them.Now, to the Girlfriend this doesn't really sound like Halloween at all, but it sounds pretty boring!!Sembrava quindi che ci potesse essere una connessione tra gli antichi Romani (antenati della Girlfriend) e Halloween, ma la verita' si e' rivelata un po' deludente."Parentalia" altro non e' che la festa che noi Italiani chiamiano "Ognissanti" e che celebriamo tutt'oggi il primo Novembre, visitando le tombe dei parenti defunti e omaggiandoli con fiori.Alla Girlfriend questa tradizione sembra pero' meno emozionate dell'idea di Halloween, e a voi?
It is therefore more likely to link Halloween to the Celtic festival of Samhain, from Old Irish Samuin which means "summer's end". It fell on the last day of Autumn and it was a time of preparation for the winter and the many cold months ahead.There was also a belief that at this time of the year the physical and the supernatural worlds were at their closest and magic things could happen! In order to keep the spirits away, Irish people used to build huge bonfires and invoked the help of gods through animal (and maybe even human) sacrifice. It is well known though that the festival of Halloween is certainly hugely influenced by the Christian "All saints Day", first thing in the name as this is also known as "All Hollows".Apparently it's just the same occasion, but with different ways to celebrate it. E' risaputo comunque che la festa di Halloween e' certamente molto influenzata dal rito Cristiano di "Ognissanti", prima di tutto nel nome, dato che la festa e' anche nota come "All Hollows" (tutti gli spiriti).Sembra di fatto essere la stessa occasione, solo celebrata in modi diversi.The name "Halloween" was firstly attested in 16th century and it seems to be a variation from the Scottish All Hallows-Even (evening) or "the night before All Hallows Day".Il nome "Halloween" fu attestato per la prima volta nel sedicesimo secolo e pare essere una variazione dallo Scozzese "All Hallows-Even" ovvero "la notte prima di Ognissanti".Irish people seem to believe that the spirits of their dead relatives come back to haunt the places they used to live in, during this night. This was told the Girlfriend by The Boyfriend's dad himself . Apparently someone in his family actually witnessed a supernatural presence in their house at Halloween.Gli Irlandesi sembrano tuttora convinti che gli spiriti dei loro cari deceduti ritornino a infestare i luoghi in cui vivevano, durante questa notte. Questo particolare e' stato raccontato alla Girlfriend dal papa' del Boyfriend stesso: pare che un suo familiare abbia davvero avvertito una "presenza" in casa durante la notte di Halloween. The fun side of this festival is obviously the "trick or treating", at least for kids and the Girlfriend too, who can't wait to open the door to some kids in spooky fancy dresses and provide sweeties (if she manages not to eat them all before tonight!)Il lato divertente della festa e' ovviamente il "dolcetto-scherzetto", almeno per i bambini e per la Girlfriend, la quale non vede l'ora di aprire la porta a qualche marmocchio mascherato e dispensare dolcetti (se riesce a non mangiarseli tutti prima di stasera!).Happy Halloween everybody by The Italian Girlfriend and The Boyfriend!Buon Halloween a tutti dall'Italian Girlfriend a dal Boyfriend!
