Interview with Coastal

(ITA) Se dovessi definire i Coastal in poche parole, direi "una perfetta fusione tra shoegaze e slowcore". So che tu (Jason) sei stato influenzato dallo shoegaze mentre Josh ascoltava molto slowcore. Puoi dirci i gruppi o gli stili che hanno influenzato maggiormente ognuno di voi?Quando abbiamo formato i Coastal ascoltavo molto i Velour 100. Anche se la gente ci ritiene dei seguaci dei Low, probabilmente sono i Velour 100 ad avermi ispirato di più. Ero e sono un grande fan dello shoegaze, ma anche Josh lo è. Certo slowcore è troppo per me. Mi annoia. Al di là delle varie categorizzazioni, mi è sempre piaciuta la musica melliflua e melodica. Mi sono sviluppato su quello stile. Ho avuto un sacco di sorelle maggiori costantemente col cuore costantemente spezzato, e così ho solo ascoltato quello che hanno fatto perché era già sul piatto. Jim era in una band più simile ai Sunny Day Real Estate, quando lo abbiamo incontrato. Suonava la chitarra e cantava. Non è un batterista, ma da allora è diventato abbastanza bravo e suona anche in un'altra band che necessita del suo talento molto più dei Coastal. Le preferenze musicali di Luisa sono molto diverse da quelle del resto di noi. Lei ama la roba classica e più femminile. Nostra figlia di nove anni, sta imparando a suonare il violino così in questi giorni abbiamo in rotazione il cd del metodo Suzuki per la maggior parte del tempo. Sta diventando piuttosto brava. Ha già scritto anche alcune canzoni. La musica è un must per ogni famiglia.Halfway to you è più complesso e sofisticato del vostro album d'esordio. Come mai avete deciso di arricchire il vostro sound?Abbiamo fatto un EP tra i due album cominciando a sperimentare l'aggiunta di più strati e, infine, ci è piaciuta la direzione intrapresa. In più ci sono cose che ho voluto provare con l'ultimo album (voce in falsetto, archi, campioni, ecc.). Nessuno vuole ascoltare un nuovo album uguale al precedente, ma ero anche molto preoccupato di non discostarmi troppo dal nostro suono originale.
Il terzo LP è stato annunciato nel 2009, ma non è stato ancora pubblicato. Ci sono novità?
Non ricordarmelo;) avevo tutte le intenzioni di finire prima di ora, ma la vita si è davvero intensificata da quando i figli so sono aggiunti alla nostra famiglia. Siamo tutti abbastanza impegnati nelle nostre rispettive carriere. Alla fine della giornata sono abbastanza stanco quindi è difficile sedersi per mettersi a fare musica. E' difficile più che altro avere un po' di continuità quando ci si mette a registrare un po' qua e un po' là. Ho ancora un forte desiderio di scrivere musica però.
Che tipo di suono caratterizzerà il prossimo album?
Io non credo che sarà molto diverso rispetto al nostro ultimo album. Non ho ancora uno sguardo d'insieme (non ce l'ho mai), quindi vedremo quando sarà finito. Esso conterrà alcuni vecchi brani ancora inediti quindi sarà molto più simile alle prime cose dei Coastal.
Un sacco di band in questi giorni sono orientate verso l'auto-produzione, gli ultimi 3 EP dei Coastal sono stati autoprodotti...che ne pensi? Nell'epoca di internet le etichette sono ancora fondamentali?
In generale penso sia figo. Si scopre tanta musica che altrimenti rimarrebbe inascoltata. Essere associati ad un'etichetta aiuta ancora sotto il profilo della credibilità. Non direi che è necessario, ma ci sono così tante band là fuori che aiuta a distinguersi dire che si è legati ad un'etichetta. Che qualcun altro è disposto a investire tempo e denaro nella vostra musica. E' stato fantastico lavorare con la nostra label negli ultimi 10 anni. Avremmo potuto mettere gli EP degli ultimi anni su iTunes, ma non siamo nei Coastal per i soldi. In più mi sentivo in colpa per non finire il nuovo album. Non so se abbiamo un sacco di fan, ma quelli che abbiamo sono leali (e apprezzati).Non suonate dal vivo da un po'. Tornerete presto sul palco?
Credo di no, per lo stesso motivo per cui l'album non è finito. La vita ce lo impedisce. Josh vive in California e il resto di noi vive nello Utah. Potrebbe spostarsi la prossima estate che spero ci porti a suonare di più e a fare più musica nuova. Io amo suonare dal vivo. Il nostro desiderio di fare musica non è diminuito. Solo che è diventato troppo difficile farlo.
Quali sono i vostri lavori quotidiani e che cosa ne pensate della carriera di musicista professionista?
Sono il vice presidente per il marketing di una società milionaria di integratori alimentari. Non molto indie, lo so. Ma mi piace il fatto che quello che faccio aiuta le persone a vivere una vita più sana. Josh e Jim sono entrambi web designer senior per le rispettive società. Luisa fa la mamma casalinga dei nostri quattro figli. La tengono molto occupata. Inoltre lei fa un sacco di volontariato nella comunità. L'ho sposata.Fare una vita dedicata alla musica non è mai stato l'obiettivo. Abbiamo voluto vedere quanta strada avremmo potuto fare senza investire i nostri soldi nella band. Abbiamo parlato con i Low, una volta dopo uno spettacolo che abbiamo fatto con loro e mentre loro hanno avuto successo in questo, hanno detto che non era una gran vita. Sei legato ad una sorta di stipendio connesso ai live. E' difficile se non si è su una major o non si è costantemente alla radio. Comunque penso che nemmeno quegli artisti siano molto liberi artisticamente. Inoltre non è un buon ambiente per i bambini e per noi i bambini sono sempre stati una priorità. Abbiamo un sacco di libertà attualmente, anche se non è la situazione migliore per produrre musica.
Quasi dieci anni fa hai detto che stavi pensando a una carriera da solista ... hai ancora quell'idea?
Certo. Mi conforta sapere che c'è sempre quest'opzione. In questi giorni Luisa è così occupata che è difficile portarla in studio, così ho anche cominciato a cantare cori in falsetto. Abbiamo messo sul nostro sito la canzone We Drink to Remember in cui faccio i cori. Sembro abbastanza femminile se necessario.
Cosa ne pensi dell'attuale scena musicale ethereal (slowcore, shoegaze, dream-pop, ecc)?
E' molto emozionante vedere che le influenze di questo grande stile di musica ancora ondeggiano attraverso i secoli. Shoegaze e dream-pop hanno davvero toccato una corda profonda in me (e in un sacco di gente). Non sono sicuro che abbia mai avuto l'attenzione che merita, ma penso che ai fan di questo genere piaccia così. La musica pop è così vacua in questi giorni. Con tanta roba indipendente e l'accesso a Internet è facile trovare qualcosa che ti piace. Ultimamente sono stato in una band chiamata Letting Up Despite Great Faults. Li ho trovati facendo riferimento a un video musicale prodotto da un ragazzo che stavo considerando per un'assunzione nella mia squadra di lavoro. Quanto può essere casuale?

(ENG) If I should explain Coastal in few words, I'd say "a perfect fusion between shoegaze and slowcore". I know that Jason has been influenced by shoegaze while Josh leaned toward slowcore. Can you tell us the bands or the styles that influenced more each member of the band?At the time coastal was formed I was listening to a lot of Velour 100. Even though people assume we were after the Low sound, Velour 100 is probably more what I was into. Yes I was and still am a huge shoegaze fan but so is Josh. Some slowcore is too much for me. I get bored with it. All musical classifications aside, what I have always liked is mellow, melodic music. I was raised on that style. I had a lot of older sisters constantly going through heartbreak and so I would just listen to what they did because it was already on the turntable. Jim was in a band more akin to Sunny Day Real Estate when we met him. He played guitar and sang. He’s not a drummer but has since become quite good and even plays in another band far more demanding of his drum talents than coastal. Luisa’s style of music is vastly different from all of ours. She’s into classical and more female-driven stuff. Our nine-year-old daughter is learning violin so these days we have the Suzuki Method CDs on most of the time. She’s getting to be rather good. She’s even written some songs already. Music is a must for any household.Halfway to you is more complex and sophisticated than your debut album; why did you decide to enrich your sound?We did an ep in between albums and started to experiment with adding more layers and ultimately liked the direction. Plus there were things I wanted to try with the last album (falsetto vocals, strings, samples, etc.). No one wants to hear the same album again with a new release but I was also very concerned with not departing too much from our original sound.The third LP was announced in 2009, but has not been released yet. Any news?Don’t remind me ;) I had every intention of finishing before now but life has really gotten in the way mainly in the form of more kids added to our family. We are all pretty far into our respective careers too. By the end of the day and between the two demands I’m pretty tired so it is hard to sit down and wrestle with music. It’s just harder to get into a flow when you sit down to record a little here and a little there. I still have a strong desire to write music though. What kind of sound will characterize the next album?I don’t think it will be that much different than our last album. I don’t have it mapped out yet (I never do) so we’ll see when it’s done. It will contain some previously unreleased songs so that will no doubt make it sound somewhat like early coastal. Lots of bands in these days are oriented towards the self-production; the last 3 Coastal's EPs have been self-released...what do you think about that? Are in the web-ages the labels still fundamental?Overall I think it is cool. So much music is being heard that would not otherwise. It still helps with your credibility to be associated with a label. I wouldn’t say it is necessary but with so many bands out there it helps to differentiate yourself by saying you are signed to a label. That someone else is willing to invest time and money into your music. Our label has been great to work with over the last 10 years. We could have posted the last few eps on iTunes but we aren’t in coastal for the money. Plus I was feeling guilty for not finishing the new album. I’m not sure if we have a lot of fans but the ones we do have are loyal (and appreciated). You didn't play live for a while; will you return on stage soon?For the same reason the album is not done I’m affraid. Life getting in the way. That and Josh lives in California and the rest of us are in Utah. He might be moving back in the Summer which I hope leads to more playing out and more new music. I love playing live. Our desire to make music has not diminished. It has just gotten harder to do. Which are your daily jobs and what do you think about a professional musician career?I’m the vice president of marketing for a multimillion dollar, global nutritional supplement company. Not very indie I know. But I do like the fact that what I do helps people live healthier lives. Josh and Jim are both senior web designers for their respective companies. Luisa is a stay at home mom to our four children. They keep her very busy. Plus she does a lot of volunteer work in the community. I married up. Making a living off of music was never the goal. We wanted to see how far we could push coastal without investing our own money in the band. We talked to Low once about it after a show we did with them and while they have been successful at it they said it was no way to live. You still sort of live paycheck to paycheck. It’s hard unless you are on a major label and have mass radio appeal. Even then I still think those types of artists aren’t really free creatively. It’s not a good environment for kids either and we all wanted kids and that was a priority. We have a lot of freedom with our situation but it is not conducive to getting a lot done musically at the moment. Almost ten years ago you said that you were thinking about a solo career...do you still have that idea?I do. I take comfort in knowing that is always an option. These days Luisa is so busy it is hard to get her into the studio so I’ve even begun to sing backing vocals in falsetto. The sample we put on our website of the song “We Drink to Remember” has me on backing vocals. I sound pretty girly when I need to.What do you think about the current ethereal music scene (slowcore, shoegaze, dream-pop, etc.)?It’s very exciting to see the influences of such a great style of music still rippling through the ages. Shoegaze/dream pop really struck a profound chord with me (and a lot of people). Not sure it ever got the attention it deserved but I think fans of it like it that way. Pop music is so vacuous these days. With so much independent stuff and the access of the web you are bound to find something you like. Lately I’ve been into a band called Letting Up Despite Great Faults. I found them by referencing a music video produced by a guy I was considering to hire on my team at work. How random is that?
