Interview with Matteo Costa: Fashion Blogger from "Gira(stile)mondo"

Quest'oggi vi propongo un post diverso dal solito. Vorrei dedicarlo, infatti, al bravissimo Fashion Blogger Matteo Costa, autore del Blog "Gira(stile)mondo".  Ho scoperto il suo blog qualche tempo fa e mi ha davvero colpito per l'altissimo contenuto, per il linguaggio, per la cura nei minimi dettagli dei suoi post, tradotti da lui stesso in un eccellente inglese, e infine per la passione per la moda che viene trasmessa al lettore durante la lettura dei suoi articoli (personalmente li considero veri e propri articoli per la loro alta qualità!). Consiglio a tutti voi di seguire il Fashion Blog di questo giovane e talentuoso ragazzo. Potrete arricchire le vostre conoscenze sulla moda ed essere sempre aggiornati sulle novità di questo settore in costante evoluzione. In fact I want to talk about the great Fashion Blogger Matteo Costa, author of the italian blog ''Gira(stile)mondo''. I recently discovered his blog and I got impressed by the really high quality of the blog's content, by the language, by the perfect layout and the care of every single detail of it and finally for the his passion for the fashion industry that he conveys to the reader in all of his posts. I really recommend you to follow the Fashion Blog of this young and talented guy in order to enrich your knowledge about fashion and get updated about the news in the fashion world, which constantly evolves. Below the interview with Matteo Costa: Raccontaci qualcosa di te! Questa è di sicuro una delle domande più difficili… Sono Romano, 16 anni, liceo classico. Sono una persona un po’ permalosa, ma tento di migliorare e so essere autoironico.  Sono un po’ timido e qualche volta passo per snob (ho un po’ la puzza sotto al naso), ma, quando conosco qualcuno, divento molto aperto. Hobbies? Bhe, il blog, di sicuro. Poi mi piace fotografare, viaggiare ed andare in centro (senza un motivo, ma se c’ è un po’ di shopping terapeutico è meglio!). A sfatare il mito che vuole l’esperto di moda come una persona superficiale e che pensa solo a quello, posso dire, senza falsa modestia, che ho un po’ di cultura. Mi piace molto la storia dell’arte e giro spesso per musei (l’ ultimo è Palazzo Barberini, è stato appena restaurato e consiglio a chiunque a Roma di vederlo). Il mio preferito è l’Ara Pacis (un altare romano alla pace), perché è sempre bellissima, una struttura (sia l’ ara che la teca di Richard Mayer) molto elegante e calma, isolata dal mondo. È un’isola felice.  Mi piacciono anche architettura e politica. Difetti? Nessuno… Ok. Forse sono un po’ logorroico (se non l’ avete ancora capito ve ne accorgerete a breve). Tell us something about you (age, studies, hobbies, character…) This is surely one of the most difficult questions… I’ m Roman, 16 years old, and I study at the classic high school (it's a king of Italian high school where you study Latin, old Greek, humanities  and less math). I’ m touchy, but I’ m trying to get better and I know how to be auto-ironical. I’ m a little bit shy, and sometimes it looks like I’ m snob, (maybe I  am, but just a little bit!), but, when I know someone, I’ m very open. Hobbies? Well, surely my blog. I also like photography, travelling and going to the center of Rome (without a reason, but if I can do some shopping it is even better!). I’ d like to debunk the myth that paints the fashion expert as superficial and frivolous. I am a little bit cultivated; I say it without any false modesty. I like the history of art and I often go to museums (the last one was Palazzo Barberini: it has been just renovated and I suggest everyone in Rome to go and see it). My favorite is the Ara Pacis (Roman Altar of the Peace): it is very elegant (the altar and the structure around, by Richard Mayer) and calm. It is like an happy island. I also like Architecture and politics. Any flow? Noone. Ok, maybe I’ m a little bit long-winded (If you still didn’t get that, you will  notice that soon!).
Com’è nata la tua passione per la moda? Guarda, rido considerando che due anni fa neanche sapevo cosa fosse Hermès e ora sono un Fashion Blogger. Poi lentamente sono diventato, come si dice a Roma, Pariolino (cioè Cabinotto, San Carlino…). Mi cominciavo a interessare di cosa mi mettessi. Vestivo molto firmato, omologato. La mia passione era Gucci. Poi, guardandomi intorno, mi accorgevo di come vestisse la gente. Ho cominciato a comprare Burberry, a raffinarmi. Però devo dire che fino a poco tempo fa contavo molto di più sulla griffe che sul singolo pezzo. Da quest’ estate, più o meno, tento di vedere di più alla bellezza del capo, di comprare cose più particolari, con un’ identità che mi rispecchi e di allargare i miei orizzonti. In questo devo ringraziare anche molti utenti di Yahoo!Answer, sezione moda. Con uno di loro ho anche un bel rapporto, ora. Attualmente il mio stile è quello di  mischiare brand classici che contano sulla qualità con brand nuovi, di moda, particolari, ma sono in continua evoluzione. How was your passion for fashion born? I laugh thinking that two years ago I didn’t know what Hermès was, and now I am a Fashion Blogger. Then I became a Pariolino, as we say in Rome: I wore Burberry polos, Hogan sneakers and so on. I became interested in what I wore. I had lot of designer pieces. My passion was Gucci. I started to notice and  observe how people got dressed.  I began buying Burberry and refining myself. But until some time ago I gave more importance to the brand rather than to the single piece of clothing. From this summer, more or less, I’ ve been trying to look more at the beauty of the piece, to buy more particular things, with an identity that has to be also mine, and to open my horizons. And for this I have to thank many users of the fashion session of Italian Yahoo!Answer. With one of them I also have a very good friendship. Now my style is to mix classic brands that focus on quality with new, fashion, particular brands, but I’ m in constant evolution. 
Quando e per quale motivo hai deciso di aprire un fashion blog? All’ inizio fantasticavo sull’ idea di aprire un blog: mi immaginavo che contenuti potesse avere, cercavo qualcuno a cui far vedere le mie opinioni, che le condividesse. Ho cominciato a ritrovarmi con sempre più argomenti in testa e così ho cominciato. Era il 18 dicembre dell’ anno scorso. When and why did you start to open a  fashion blog? First I daydreamed about opening a blog: I imagined which contents it could have and looked for someone to show and share my opinions. I had more and more topics in my mind, so I decided to start. It was the 18^th of December of last year.
"Fashion Blog" è un termine ampio e generico: qual è il contenuto del tuo blog? Bhe, è un blog abbastanza variegato. Mi piace molto parlare di moda applicata, ad esempio, alla finanza: le strategie commerciali (Gucci che si fa popolare, Hermès e Tom Ford che puntano all’ esclusività…) e, più in generale, delle dinamiche della moda: chi compra il falso, la differenza tra i vari prodotti griffati… Non faccio l’ outfitter perché ne conosco di migliori e con un guardaroba ben più ampio del mio, poi non ho ancora detto a nessun mio conoscente del blog (è quasi una sfida con me stesso), e quindi davvero non saprei come scattarmi le foto. Oltre alla moda ogni tanto trovo piccole aziende di qualità di cui parlare: sia abbigliamento classico che fashion, insomma. Parlo anche di fotografia e viaggi, due mie passioni. Infine di orologi (il mio sogno è un Breguet Marine, c’ è qualcuno che si fa avanti per regalarmelo?!) e di conigli. Ne ho uno, (è un coniglio con le dimensioni di un cavallo, in verità), e ogni tanto spuntano sue foto. Il nome? Rosicchio (nomen omen)! Fashion blog is a very generic term: what's the content of your blog? Mine is a variegated blog. I like talking, for example, about economy and fashion: the different commercial strategies (Gucci is more popular, Hermès and Tom Ford aim to exclusivity… and, more generally, to the dynamics of fashion: who buys fakes, the difference among the many kinds of designer products… I’ m not an outfitter because I know some that are definetely better and have a bigger wardrobe, furthermore no one of my acquaintances knows about the blog (that is a sort of challenge with myself), and so I wouldn’t have a photographer. In addition to fashion I find little business and workshops with great quality, and I speak about them. So we can say I speak of fashion and classic menswear. I also write about travels and photography, two great passions of mine. At last I speak of watches (my dream is a Breguet Marine: is anyone there that could give it to me as a present?) and of rabbits. I have one (actually, he is a rabbit with the dimensions of a horse), and sometimes you can see its photos. His name? Rosicchio (“Nibble”: Nomen Omen). Dove trovi gli spunti per i tuoi post? Sarò banale, ma tutto intorno a me: ad esempio l’ altro giorno stavo andando a fare gli ultimi vaccini (sono un po’ in ritardo!), e trasmettevano un film, alla ASL: "La carica dei 101". Ho visto Crudelia De Mon ed ho pensato: una vera fashion icon! Sembra la Wintour! Ed ecco il post! Oppure guardo spesso i siti delle varie maison (e dei forum di orologi), così da cercare qualcosa di nuovo e carino di cui parlare. Trovo nuovi brand su siti di shopping online o di blogger (soprattutto stranieri) e ne parlo. Inoltre c’ è un blog molto intelligente, che spinge a pensare sul sistema moda: comeunagazzaladra.wordpress.com . E poi luxurycoulture.com, ha spesso contenuti interessanti. Where do you take inspiration for your posts? Maybe I’ m dull, but inspiration is all round me. For example, some days ago I went to get vaccinated (a little bit later) and the ASL (local sanitarian agency) was broadcasting a film: "One hundred and one Dalmatians". I saw Cruella De Vil, and I thought: she is a modern fashion icon!  She looks like Anna Wintour! The same day there was a post about it on my blog! I also browse the sites of many brands and watch forums, to find something new which I can write about. I find new designers on the sites of online shopping and of fashion bloggers (especially foreign ones), and I write about it. There’s also a very intelligent blog that drives you to think about the fashion system: comeunagazzaladra.wordpress.com. Andluxurycoulture.com has interesting content. Quali sono per te le migliori riviste di moda, i migliori siti di news moda ed i migliori fashion blog? Bhe, tra i Fashion Blog di sicuro cito il tuo! Poi quelli che ho detto sopra e, per la moda uomo The three f, blog italiano. Spulcio anche Vogue uomo online, ogni tanto. Ancora: Iz Andrew's Blog e COOL e CHIC style to dress italian, più una serie di blog di abbigliamento uomo formale. Which ones are, for you, the best fashion magazines, blogs and news sites? Among the fashion blog surely there’s yours! Then those ones I have said before and, for men ’s  fashion, The three f, an Italian blog. Sometimes I browse Vogue Men online. Other blogs are: IzAndrew’s blog and Cool e Chich style to dress Italian, then some formal menswear blogs. Cosa non deve mancare nel guardaroba di un uomo e di una donna? Bhe, recentemente ho scritto un post, anzi 3 puntate,  sul guardaroba di un uomo. Nel guardaroba di un uomo non devono mancare:

• Completo, camicie, cravatta (e l’ uomo se la deve saper fare BENE!)
• Orologio
• Delle polo (puntate sul colore) e magliette più ironiche (Lanvin, Margiela…), soprattutto per un ragazzo
• Un paio di jeans davvero comodi (io pubblicizzo i Jacob Cohen)
• Scarpe: Sneakers semplici, tendenti al bianco (Paul Smith, Lanvin, Dior Homme), e anche i mocassini con gommino, o comunque un paio più elegante, io prediligo Car Shoe

Inoltre ci sono le giacche: trovo che una giacca in ottima pelle dal design minimalista, chiara, sia un investimento.  Poi una più pesante. Per essere più sintetici: un completo ed il necessario per un look formale, due tipi di scarpe, sneakers e più formali, polo e un bel paio di pantaloni. Per la donna delle belle scarpe col tacco (consiglio le Pumps di YSL, Manolo Blahnik o Christian Louboutin. Io preferisco Manolo Blahnik: Louboutin mi piace e non mi piace, dipende dalle creazioni), poi una borsa: Almala (più economiche ma molto carine), Lanvin, Hermès (la Lindy è molto carina), Dior, Chloè…basta che non siano logate. Inoltre un paio di ballerine, molto femminili: Lanvin, Balenciaga, Miu Miu, Vivienne Westwood, Tod’s, Tory Burch ma anche Liu Jo. Poi vestiti carini, certo, ma credo che gli accessori diano un tocco in più. Ah, dimenticavo: un tubino nero ed una clutch (Bottega Veneta o  Britannia di Alexander McQueen, suggerisco). What should never miss in a men and a in women wardrobe? Recently I wrote 3 posts about that, but only for men. In a male wardrobe you should absolutely find:

• Suit, shirts, tie (and the men has to know well how to tie it!)
• Watch
• Polos (aim on the color) and more ironic tees (Lanvin, Margiela…), especially for a guy,
• A pair of comfortable jeans (I support Jacob Cohen)
• Shoes: simple sneakers (Dior Homme, Lanvin, Paul Smith) and a more elegant pair, like the mocassins of Car Shoe.

There are also jackets: I think that a good leather jacket, with minimalistic design and great quality of the leather in a light color is a real investment. Then a heavier one. Synthetically: a suit, two kinds of shoes, sneakers and formal ones, polos and a good pair of casual trousers. For the women a pair of high heels (I suggest YSL Pumps, Manolo Blahnik or Christian Louboutin. I prefer Manolo: Louboutin it depends on the creations), than a bag: Almala (economic but lovely Italian brand), Lanvin, Hermès (the Lindy bag is very nice!), Dior, Chloè… But it must not have an enormous logo on it. A pair of very feminine flats: Lanvin, Balenciaga, Miu Miu, Vivienne Westwood, Tod’s, Tory Burch and also Liu Jo. Finally nice clothes for sure, but I think that the accessories give a special touch. Oh, I was forgetting a little black dress and a clutch (Alexander McQueen Britannia or Bottega Veneta, I suggest). Qual è il tuo brand preferito? E perché? Se ne aggiungono di nuovi di continuo, ora ne ho ben 6. Lanvin, lo avrete capito, perché apprezzo le sue creazioni. Spesso, infatti, le t-shirt delle marche di moda sono uguali a quelle che troveresti anche all’OVS, oppure sono troppo “particolari”: piene di strappi, con colli a V improponibili…. Invece Lanvin propone cose insolite, ma sempre mettibili: t-shirt con ricami, stampe strampalate, polo con colori degradè e dettagli in gros-grain… Hermès: creazioni di altissima qualità, e in passerella spesso adocchio qualcosa di davvero bello. Peccato per i prezzi. Anche Tom Ford fa belle cose, con prezzi stratosferici, ma mi piacciono i suoi look, sempre eleganti e sartoriali.Poi c’ è Vilebrequin, che ravviva l’ estate con i suoi costumi pazzi e diversi dai soliti. Burberry, di cui apprezzo la collezione Prorsum (soprattutto la linea di quest’ inverno, con un’ ispirazione molto militare) e la Brit, basta chenon  ci sia il check in vista, perché ormai ce n’ è troppo in giro. Infine Brunello Cucinelli: un imprenditore etico, che ha ristrutturato il borgo dove produce (Solomeo, in Umbria), creandoci un teatro… paga anche molto bene i dipendenti. Fa un ottimo cashmere, i suoi gioielli da donna sono fantastici e le sciarpe così morbide…! Which  is your favorite brand? Why? I have a lot, and they continue to increase. At the moment they are 6. Lanvin, maybe you already noticed that, because I appreciate its creations: they are not too simple or too strange (with rips or absurd V-necks). Lanvin proposes unusual but wearable pieces: embroided tees, strange prints, polo with degrade colors and gros-grain details…Hermès: The highest quality and I see, in the runways, many beautiful pieces . Unfortunately also has the highest prices!Also Tom Ford has very nice products: I like his brand’s elegant and sartorial look. I dislike the prices. Then there’s Vilebrequin, that livens up summer with its crazy and different trunks.Burberry: I appreciate the Prorsum collection (especially this winter collection, so military-inspired!) and the Brit one, but without the check: there’s too much Burberry check all around! Last but not least Brunello Cucinelli: an ethic entrepreneur that renovated the village where he produces (Solomeo, in Umbria, the center of Italy) creating there a theatre… He also pays very well his employees. He produces optimum cashmere, the women jewelry is fantastic and the scarves are so soft…! I tuoi designer emergenti preferiti? Bella domanda…Mi mandi un po’ in crisi. Diciamo che mi piace molto Albino d’Amato, per la donna (per l'uomo lo trovo immettibile)e un brand che si chiama Nonametees che fa t-shirt molto carine. Diventerà il futuro 5preview, credo.  Sempre parlando di t-shirts, da donna mi piacciono quelle di Eleonora Azzolina: I’m a glamour tee. Your favorite emerging designers? Good question, you put me in crisis. I like Albino d’ Amato for women (for men I think it’s impossible to wear), a brand called Nonametees, which does very nice t-shirts and I think it will become the next 5preview, and, speaking about tees, I like those one of Eleonora Azzolina: I’ m a glamour tee (for women). Quali sono per te i trend della stagione? Ecco, vedi: un lato buono della moda uomo è che è piuttosto stabile, non ci sono davvero trend da riconoscere ogni stagione, credo. Comunque, nonostante non sia proprio esperto, tenterò di dare un’idea personale: c’è ancora un revival retrò, dai '50 ai '70. Colore che andrà di moda è il verde, che mi piace tanto, specialmente nella sua tonalità petrolio (perché chiamarlo così, poi?). Più in generale andrà di moda il colore, anche per l’ inverno.  E questo vale anche per l’ uomo. Which will be this season's hottest trends?  One of the advantages of men’s fashion is that it is more stable than women’s one, there are not real trends to recognize each season, I think. However, although I’ m not an expert, I’ m gonna try to give a personal opinion: there’s still a retro revival, from the 50s to the 70s. The color that will be in fashion is green, that I like a lot, especially Dartmouth green. Generally, colors will be on fashion, also for this winter. And also for men.
