Iron Man 3: intervista alla controfigura di Robert Downey Jr., Trevor Habberstad (in versione italiana e inglese)

Iron Man 3 è ormai nelle sale da qualche settimana, e per l’occasione vi presentiamo una intervista in esclusiva a Trevor Habberstad, giovane stunt che nella pellicola diretta da Shane Black è stato la controfigura di Robert Downey Jr., oltre a lavorare con l’ausilio della motion capture su altri personaggi della pellicola. Trevor ha nel suo curriculum la partecipazione a pellicole quali Il Cavaliere Oscuro: Il ritorno, The Amazing Spider-Man, Captain America: Il Primo Vendicatore e a serie televisive come Chuck.

Puoi dire ai nostri lettori come sei entrato nell’industria cinematografica e come è iniziata la tua carriera da stunt?
Sono stato abbastanza fortunato da nascere nell’industria degli stunt. Mio padre è Jeff Habberstad, direttore molto conosciuto e di grande successo della 2nd Unit, coordinatore di stunt ed uno stuntman. Mi ha fatto iniziare quando avevo 5 anni in un film chiamato Steal Big/Steal Little. Da quel momento che io ne sappia ho sempre voluto essere uno stuntman. E’ stata solo una questione di tempo. In realtà ho iniziato a considerare seriamente l’idea di farne la mia carriera attorno ai 19 anni. E’ stato senz’altro un inizio turbolento/brusco, mio padre mi ha fatto lavorare molto durante. Ma ne è valsa la pena.

Come sei stato coinvolto in Iron Man 3? Hai sostenuto un’audizione?
Lo stuntman che indossava i panni di Iron Man negli scorsi film si chiamava Clay Fontenot. Quando IM3 è iniziato, lui era molto occupato nelle riprese di un altro film e non poteva occuparsi anche di IM3. Quando ciò accadde, fu lui a raccomandare altri stuntman ed io ero su quella lista. Ho mandato un filmao di me stesso – non “Iron Man” ed alcune pose ai produttori. Tutto le carte hanno deposto a mio favore e così mi è stato offerto il lavoro di una vita.

Quanto tempo hai lavorato ad IM3?
Dall’inizio alla sua conclusione. Abbiamo iniziato a girare a Maggio 2012 e finito a metà novembre 2012. Sono state lunghe riprese.

Hai dovuto indossare il vestito di Iron Man?
Sì. Ho indossato il costume di Iron Man così come quello di Iron Patriot. Ho anche fatto alcune “motion capture” di altri personaggi che vedrete nel film.

Potresti descrivere i tuoi rapporti con Robert Downey jr. e in generale, l’atmosfera che si percepiva sul set?
Robert Downey Jr. è un attore incredibile con cui lavorare. Lui è il vero Iron Man ed averlo lì a dare cosigli con il costume è stato fondamentale per lo sviluppo dell’armatura del personaggio di Iron Man. Abbiamo lavorato abbastanza bene insieme.
L’atmosfera sul set era fantastica. Ci sono ovviamente momenti pieni di stress come in qualsiasi set, ma in IM3 era come una grande famiglia. Io credo che tutti amassero il loro lavoro e tutti ci siam divertiti molto a fare questo bellissimo film.

Quali attività ci sono in un giorno tipo per uno stuntman in un film come Iron Man 3?
La routine giornaliera può variare moltissimo da giornata a giornata. Comunque, solitamente raggiungo il set piuttosto presto così che il team di costumisti di Iron Man potesse vestirmi ed essere pronto per qualsiasi scena avessimo dovuto girare. C’era un sacco di lavoro e tonnellate di peso persi sudando ed indossando la pesantissima armatura tutto il giorno.

Cosa puoi dirci sul direttore, Shane Black?
Shane è una grande persona con grandi idee per questi film. Era sempre calmo e raccolto sul set, è stato un grandissimo capo per l’intera squadra.

Non credo che potrei dire una sola cosa cattiva sul suo conto. Ha uno stile unico e mi ha davvero entusiasmato lavorare con lui sul set.

Tra Iron Man e film come The Dark Knight Rises, Capitan America: Il primo venticatore quali sono, secondo te e se ce ne sono, le maggiori differenze nelle scene d’azione?
Per ciascuno di questi film ci si è avvalsi di coordinatori e squadre di stuntmen differenti ma ho trovato/è stato ugualmente entusiasmante lavorare ad ognuno di essi.
Durante le riprese, indipendentemente da quale team di stuntmen venga scelto, tutti si impegnano per rendere ogni episodio il migliore della saga.
Per le scene d’azione, si sta pian piano tornando ad utilizzare veri stuntmen piuttosto che elaborazioni digitali e ho avuto la possibilità di sperimentare/toccare con mano questa (nuova) tendenza mentre lavoravo ad ognuno di questi film.

Iron Man 3 è differente dai precedenti film. Molto più incentrato sull’azione. Questo ti ha facilitato il lavoro nel film?
Ci siamo sicuramente concentrati MOLTO sull’azione in questo film, e questo è perché Robert Downey Jr. ha una grande capicità nello sviluppare l’azione. L’opportunità di essere in questo film e esser parte di così tanta azione è stato fantastico. Ha dato a tutto il team di stunt l’opportunità di mostrare tutto il loro talento. La grande differenza in IM3 è che anche la piccola parte d’azione che vedrete è al 100% vera. Sono stati usati pochi “Green Screen” e ciò l’ha reso un film decisamente migliore, per me.

Quali sono i tuoi prossimi impegni?
Proprio ora sto lavorando sul nuovo film degli X-men X-Men:Days of future past. Sta venendo su un altro incredibile episodio di questa saga.

Could you tell to our readers about how you brought into movie industry and how did your career as a stunt begun?
I was fortunate enough to be born into the stunt industry. My dad is Jeff Habberstad, a well known and highly successful 2nd Unit Director, stunt coordinator, and stuntman.

He got me started in the business when I was 5 years old on a film called Steal Big/Steal Little. From that moment on I knew I wanted to be a stuntman. From there it was only a matter of time. I truly began pursuing stunts as a career when I was 19 years old. It was a rough start as my dad made me work hard for my success. But it was worth it.

How did you get involved with Iron Man 3 movie? Did you have to audition?
The stuntman that wore the iron man suit in the past few movies was a guy named Clay Fontenot. When IM3 came up, he was busy working on another film and unable to come over to do IM3. When that happened he recommended some alternate stuntmen and I happened to be among that list. I submitted footage of myself don’t Iron Man movements and poses to the producers. All of the cards fell in my favor and I was offered the job of a lifetime!

How much time did you work on IM3?
I worked on the movie from start to finish. We began filming in May of 2012 and finished in the middle of November 2012. It was a long shoot.

Did you have to wear the Iron Man suit?
I did. I wore the Iron Man suit as well as the Iron Patriot Suit. I also did motion capture for many of the other suits that you see in the movie.

Could you describe your relationship with Robert Downey Jr. and, in general, the atmosphere you could feel on set?
Robert Downey Jr. was an amazing actor to work with. He is the real Iron Man, and having him there to lend some advice with the suit was crucial to the development of the Iron Man suit character. We worked together quite well.
The atmosphere on set was great. There are always stressful moments on any movie set, but the IM3 set was like a giant family. I think everyone loved their jobs, and we all had a great time making such an awesome movie.

Which activities include a typical day for a stuntman in a movie like Iron Man 3?
The typical daily routine can widely from day to day. However, for me it usually included getting to set early so that the team in charge of the Iron Man suit could suit me up and get me ready for whatever scenes we may be shooting. It involved a lot of hard work and tons of weight lost from sweating and wearing the heavy suit all day.

What can you tell us about the director, Shane Black?
Shane was a great guy with a great vision for this movie. He was always calm and collected on set, and made a fantastic leader for our entire crew. I don’t think I could say a single bad thing about him. He has a very unique style and I really enjoyed working on his set.

Between Iron Man and movies like The Dark Knightv Rises, Captain America: The First Avengers which were, in your opinion, the main differences into action sequences, if any?
Each of those movies had different stunt coordinators and different stunt teams, but each was equally as exciting to work on. With every successive movie, no matter which stunt team is on it, they all strive to make it the best ever. The growing trend in stunts has been to bring real stunts back into movies instead of big CGI stunts and I was able to experience that trend in each of these movies.

Iron Man 3 is different from the previous movies in the franchise. Much more focused on the action. This has facilitated your work on the movie?
We definitely focused A LOT on the action in this movie, and a lot of that is because Robert Downey Jr. had a big hand in the development of the action. The opportunity to be on this movie and be a part of so much of the action was amazing. It really gave the whole stunt team an opportunity to showcase all of their talents. The big difference in IM3 is that almost every piece of action you see is 100% real. Very little green screen was used and that made it a much better movie, in my opinion.

What are your future projects?
Right now I am working on the new X-men movie, X-Men: Days of Future Past. It’s shaping up to be another epic installment in this already storied franchise.
