La maglieria, ed i maglioni in particolare, hanno bisogno di cure particolari e, visto che di solito costano pure abbastanza, soprattutto se di buona qualità, vale la pena fare qualche piccolo sforzo per tenerli in buono stato il più a lungo possibile. La maggior parte delle fibre, naturali o artificiali, hanno bisogno di particolari attenzioni, per non parlare della necessità di garantire che i vostri maglioni e cappelli non perdano la forma, in modo poterli riutilizzare con successo anche nelle stagioni successive.
1Piegate i maglioni ed i vestiti in maglia. Non li appendete mai perché li ritrovereste più grandi di almeno due taglie la prossima volta che li vorrete indossare o, peggio ancora, li potreste trovare deformi.

Rimuovete regolarmente i pelucchi dai vostri capi in maglia per tenerli sempre presentabili. I pelucchi vengono causati dallo sfregamento durante l'uso e possono apparire ovunque sui vostri capi in maglia. Potete acquistare una spazzola apposita o utilizzare un rasoio per toglierli.

Rimuovete regolarmente polvere, capelli e lanugine dai capi. Basta una spazzola morbida da bambino: la sua morbidezza vi permetterà di togliere velocemente ogni tipo di sporcizia superficiale senza rovinare il capo.

Riparate subito la maglia. Se cade un bottone o trovate un piccolo buco, riparatelo nel momento stesso in cui lo scoprite. In caso contrario, il buco potrebbe diventare più grande in quel caso il capo sarebbe da buttare.

Date un break ai vostri capi in maglia preferiti. Indossandoli tutti i giorni potrebbero perdere la forma o i frequenti lavaggi potrebbero scolorirli: meglio alternarli con altri capi.

Lavate la maggior parte della maglieria a mano. A meno che le istruzioni non dicano espressamente di lavarli in lavatrice, non fatelo mai. I capi in lana devono essere sempre lavati a mano con sapone delicato. Anzi sarebbe meglio far scorrere l'acqua tiepida e mecolarvi man mano un sapone neutro per rendere l'acqua saponata, oppure aggiungervi scaglie di sapone. Se possibile, cercate di non strizzare la maglia, meglio lasciarla sgocciolare e togliere l'acqua in eccesso con un asciugamano. Fate ancora più attenzione con i maglioni ricamati o cha hanno applicazioni di perline, strass, ecc, in questo caso sarà meglio utilizzare acqua fredda.

Trattate il cashmere e gli altri capi delicati con molta attenzione. Il cashmere è molto bello, ma la sua morbidezza lo rende soggetto a pelucchi e difficile da curare. Altre fibre delicate sono il mohair, l'angora e lana d'agnello. Lavate questi capi in una soluzione di sapone molto delicato specifico per la cura dei capi in lana. Non strizzateli - piuttosoto arrotolateli in un grande asciugamano per rimuovere l'umidità in eccesso e poi lasciali piatti ad asciugare su un canovaccio.

Conservate con attenzione i capi in maglia durante i mesi estivi. Non usate la naftalina - oltre ad avere un pessimo odore è anche molto insalubre per gli esseri umani. In commercio ci sono molte alternative alla naftalina, ma se cercate un rimedio sicuro e naturale potreste utilizzate palline di cedro o sacchetti a base di erbe o foglie secche di alloro da inserire tra gli strati di abbigliamento. Mantenete pulito l'armadio - ripulitelo a fondo ad ogni cambio stagione.

Lavate ogni capo prima di metterlo via. Questo è molto importante per evitare di offrire un pasto gratuito alle tarme.

Riponete i capi in maglia perfettamente asciutti. Sia che li mettiate via per una stagione o per un paio di giorni, assicuratevi che nessun capo sia umido. L'umidità potrebbe provocare la crescita di muffa e questa non potrà più essere rimossa. In più potrebbe anche infettare i capi di abbigliamento circostanti e dare cattivo odore.
Knits, especially sweaters, need special care and usually they have cost you a bit, so it's worth taking the effort to keep them as long as possible. Most fibers, whether natural or man-made, need special attention when in the shape of a sweater, to guarantee that your sweater keeps on looking super for several seasons to come.1Fold your sweaters. Don't ever hang them because hanging sweaters will result in a larger sweater than the last time you put it on, or a misshapen profile.2Remove pills from your knits regularly to keep them looking presentable. Pilling is caused by rubbing during wear and can occur anywhere on your knitted pieces. Purchase a hand-held depiller or a small electric shaver made for depilling. Or pick them off by hand in front of the TV3Remove dandruff, hair & lint regularly. Purchase a baby's or child's soft hairbrush from a supermarket or drugstore. The softness of this brush will enable you to quickly brush off these sorts of unattractive sweater companions.4Repair the knits quickly. If a button falls off or a small hole appears, repair the sweater the moment that you discover it. If not, the hole may get bigger or you might just shove the piece to the back of the wardrobe, dismissing it as unwearable for its minor fault. 5Give your favorite knit a break. Wearing it everyday even though you love it will cause it to lose shape or build up hard-to-remove perspiration stains. Alternate it with other pieces.6Wash most knits by hand. Unless the instructions tell you to machine wash a sweater, never do so. Woolen sweaters should always be washed by hand in a gentle soap solution. You can either run lukewarm water and turn a favorite scented soap around and around in your hand under the water to make the water soapy, or you can add soap flakes. If possible, turn sweater inside out to wash and try not to wring the knit; let it drip dry or roll excess water off in a towel. Wringing can cause it to lose its shape. Be extra careful of sweaters with attachments such as beads, embroidery work etc.; use cool water to prevent the colors from embroidered labels running.7Treat cashmere & other delicates very carefully. Cashmere is lovely but its appealing softness makes it prone to pilling and touchy to care for. Other delicate fibers include mohair, angora and lambswool. Wash is in a very gentle solution such as Woolite or Lux Flakes etc. Do not wring - instead roll in a large, moisture-loving towel to remove excess moisture and then leave out flat to dry on a towel. If you have access to a flat sweater drying device, use it.8Store knits carefully during summer months. Do not use moth balls - they smell very bad and are very unhealthy for human beings. Use cedar balls, cedar sawdust in little calico bags, mixed herbal sachets or dry bay leaves between clothing layers or ask at your health food store for a safe alternative to moth balls. Keep wardrobe clean - dust out and vacuum at the end of each season.9Wash any piece you put away for storage. This is very important to avoid providing a free meal for moths. They will accept the invitation!10Store knits dry. Whether you are storing your sweaters for a season or for a few days, never put the piece away damp. This will encourage the growth of mildew or mold and this cannot be removed. It may also spread to surrounding clothing and will smell bad.
