Albert e Dorian ci hanno gentilmente offerto il loro doppio kayak svedese, una barca preziosa cui sono particolarmente affezionati perchè li ha accompagnati in tutte le loro traversate nel Canale di Sicilia!
Abbiamo così esplorato l'intero perimetro del porto di Valletta, circa 18 km tra il piccolo e turistico porto di Marzamxett ed il più spettacolare e fotografato Grand Harbour, che si insinua tra le lingue di terra delle tre antiche città fortificate di Cospicua, Senglea e Vittoriosa.
Quello che nel resto del mondo è vietato, qui è normale: pagaiare nel porto e perfino allenarsi per le competizioni che vengono spesso organizzate dalla federazione maltese intorno alla piccola Isola Manoel.
Fortezze, mura e chiese ovunque a chiudere l'orizzonte del doppio porto separato proprio dalla penisola su cui sorge imponente e maestosa la città di Valletta; spicca su ogni cosa la pietra giallastra e friabile utilizzata per le costruzioni sin dalla notte dei tempi... una pietra talmente morbida che Mauro ha scalfito con un'unghia e che richiede continui lavori di manutenzione e restauro!
Siamo sbarcati per una pausa prima nella baia sabbiosa di Rinella, dove avremmo potuto tenere il corso di eskimo se le condizioni meteo-marine fossero state favorevoli, e poi per una sosta più lunga e godereccia nel porticciolo incorniciato da decine di bandiere issate a festa per la Pasqua e animato da tantissime barche in legno riccamente colorate.
Quando abbiamo ripreso la navigazione ci siamo sentiti chiamare per nome: era Robert, un amico maltese a passeggio con la famiglia che ha riconosciuto il kayak tra le vele all'ancora... è molto facile quì incontrare facce conosciute, ed è molto bello!
To celebrate my 40th birthday we paddled in one of the most beautiful harbours of the Mediterranean!
Albert and Dorian have kindly lent us their precious double Swedish kayak, the boat that they always use in their long crossings of the Sicily Channel!
We therefore explored the whole perimeter of the harbour, around 18 km in all including the smaller Marzamxett and the most spectacular Grand Harbour.
What is forbidden in the rest of the world, over here is normal: paddling into the harbour and training for the races and competitions that are frequently organised by the Malta Canoe Federation around little Manoel Island takes place in Msida Creek!
Fortresses, bastions and churches are everywhere on the horizon of the majestic and imposing city of Valletta, wigh is built on the peninsula that actually separates the two ports of Marsamxett and the Grand Harbour. The cospicuous yellowish limestone used for building on the island since the dawn of time, is so soft that Mauro could scratch into it using his fingernail, and requires constant work to maintain and restore!
We've landed for our first break in the sandy bay of Rinella which was one of the options for holding our capzise prevention course had the weather been favourable, and then for a longer break in Dockyard Creek, crowned with so many flags hoisted for Easter and decorated with several brightly coloured wooden boats.
When we got back into the kayak, someone called out to us: it was Robert, a Maltese friend taking a walk with his family when he recognised the kayak through the moored yachts... here in Malta it is very common to meet somebody you known, and it is so amazing!
