Love Theme from Romeo and Juliet

“Love Theme from Romeo and Juliet“, conosciuta come  ”A Time for Us“, è l’arrangiamento strumentale di Henry Mancini della musica che Nino Rota compose per  “Romeo and Juliet” di Franco Zeffirelli, film del 1968. Tre diverse versioni del brano principale furono realizzate: ve le proponiamo tutte, per amore della musica e della poesia.

La colonna sonora del film è stata composta e diretta da Nino Rota, originariamente registrata su disco in vinile, contenente nove brani, tra cui la famosa ”What Is a Youth” con testo di Eugene Walter, interpretata da Glen Weston.

Una versione alternativa di What is a Youth: ”A Time for Us“ con testo di Larry Kusik e Eddie Snyder, venne cantata anche in italiano, col testo “Un giorno per noi” di Alfredo Rapetti (in arte: Cheope).

Il brano ”Ai Giochi Addio“, con testo di Elsa Morante, venne affidato al cantante Bruno Filippini, che nel film è il menestrello e che aveva vinto il Festival di Castrocaro insieme a Gigliola Cinquetti. Questa versione è stata re-interpretata da molti artisti, anche da Luciano Pavarotti e Natasha Marsh (soprano inglese).

La colonna sonora ha vinto un Nastro d’Argento ed è stata nominata per altri due premi (BAFTA Award e Golden Globe).[1]

Per i due film shakespeariani di Zeffirelli, La bisbetica domata (1967) e Romeo e Giulietta, Rota seppe ripercorrere con una preziosità delicatissima la stroficità modale delle canzoni a ballo rinascimentali, ritrovando quel senso della festa teatrale che aveva già espresso nel teatro lirico.2]
