Lowgold "Just Backward Of Square"

Ci sono dei dischi che meriterebbero l'immortalità.
Ecco. L'esordio dei Lowgold dovrebbe poter avere questo titolo: immortale.
C'è qualcosa di magnifico, di intenso e così spaventosamente malinconico e struggente in queste canzoni. Qualcosa che ci arriva direttamente al cuore e ci avvolge interamente.
Non faccio mistero di amare alla follia questo gruppo, ma non esagero se dico che questo è uno degli album più belli della mia vita!
E' il momento di tornare a riprendere in mano questo disco. Fatelo. Vi sentirete meglio. (2001 Nude)
Lowgold isn't big on intrigue. An average, English quartet bubbling over with ever so likable tunes, unburdened by personality, demonstrating an unfaltering desire to have been born in Modesto, CA.
The results are pretty much par for the course. In a bold move, there are songs that feature singing, others with strummed guitars, and some with both. It's the sound of what happens when music gets scared to leave home.
Inside their wry, statesmen-like banter about souls and the eventualities of locomotive transport, as in the slight poke of the coals, "Back Here Again," lies the heart of men three times their age -- with all of the embittered obsolescence and none of the wisdom. Dopo aver pubblicato due bei singoli, Beauty Dies Young e Mercury , ed essersi guadagnati (insieme ad altri gruppi, come spesso accade fra le pagine dei giornali britannici) il titolo di «nuovi Coldplay», gli inglesi Lowgold sono arrivati al disco d'esordio sulla lunga distanza.
Darren Ford (voce e chitarra), Dan Symons (chitarra), Miles Willey (basso) e Simon Scott (batteria) hanno reso manifesto il loro amore per il rock americano fin dalla scelta del produttore: quel Tony Lash già al lavoro con Quasi e Dandy Warhols e compagno d'avventura di Elliot Smith negli Heathmiser.
Il risultato è un disco fortemente chitarristico ed effettivamente accostabile all'esordio dei Coldplay, di cui i Lowgold rappresentano una versione più solare e meno portata alla malinconia.
Le canzoni non sono tutte di altissimo livello ma si nota lo sforzo teso alla ricerca, se non di una melodia memorabile, di armonie non banali e ben eseguite dalle chitarre di Symons e Ford.
La pecca maggiore del disco sembra essere invece una certa ripetitività ritmica, con la sola Counterfeit , uno dei brani migliori della raccolta, a suonare la sveglia all'ascoltatore che, qui e là, rischia di appisolarsi cullato da suoni dolci ma non sempre intriganti. La stoffa sicuramente c'è, speriamo che nel prossimo disco i Lowgold trovino il modo di metterla maggiormente in mostra. (Maurizio Zoja - http://delrock.it/)

If the Zen qualities of cricket appeal to you the sitting down, the quiet concentration and the endless minutes sat waiting for something interesting to happen then have we got a record for you.
It's the debut album by sombre romantic combo Lowgold and if the Brits had an award for Mildly Disappointing First LPs, 'Just Backward Of Square' would be a surefire favourite.
If you've been keeping a close watch on hotly-tipped British pop groups, you'll know that Lowgold, the songwriting release valve of singer Darren Ford, have thrilled the nation with a trio of ace singles in the last six months. The good news is that they're all on their debut album.
The bad news is that, aside from the stately 'In Amber', 'Beauty Dies Young', and 'Mercury', there's precious little worth recommending other than Lowgold's excellent Aerial M impression on opening track 'Golden Ratio'. 'Just Backward Of Square' gives in without a fight. It all chugs along at the same pace and gives off the depressing air of a band who ran out of genuinely exciting ideas about two seconds before they set foot in the studio.
'Out Of Reach', 'Counterfeit', and inevitable 'epic' closer 'Into The Void' scuff around in interminable twilit half-darkness, seemingly bereft of any kind of musical imagination. It all gives the nasty impression that maybe Lowgold only had the one trick all along.
What's all the more distressing about that conclusion is that anyone who has seen them live will know that they are capable of so much more. As a living, breathing act, they can produce thrilling moments and Ford has a much better sense of humour than anything here would lead you to believe.
'Just Backward Of Square' is a leaden collection of nice but unspectacular songs which could be by pretty much any anodyne glum indie band from the last 15 years. Which leaves Lowgold as the Coldplay that you want to punch slightly less. A good, solid, workmanlike outfit who raised all of our expectations just a little bit earlier than they raised their own.
