magico SRI LANKA – 1°parte

  Questa volta ci siamo separate ed abbiamo visitato questo splendido paese in due momenti differenti: d’inverno (febbraio) e d’estate (lo scorso agosto). In entrambi i casi, però, lo Sri Lanka ci ha catturate, affascinandoci e lasciandoci nel cuore un bellissimo ricordo.

This time we separated and we visited this beautiful country at two different times: in the winter (February) and in the summer (August). In both cases, however, Sri Lanka has captured us, fascinated and left us a beautiful memory.

Questo che vi raccontiamo è il viaggio fatto lo scorso Agosto. In questo periodo, il versante più adatto da visitare è quello est.

Ecco il nostro itinerario (in giallo i posti visitati):

Conosciuta con diversi nomi, tra cui Ceylon, lo Sri Lanka è un’isola al largo della costa sud-orientale del subcontinente indiano.  Questa vicinanza, e la sua forma a goccia, hanno fatto si che venisse chiamata anche lacrima dell’India.

L’origine della parola sanscrita laṃkā, Isola che risplende, è ancora un altro nome con il quale è conosciuta questa perla dell’oceano indiano, dalle mille sfaccettature.

Partenza da Roma con volo diretto fino a Colombo. Una volta lì, abbiamo raggiunto Galle con una macchina con autista. La distanza è di circa 119 km, ci si mettono circa 3h per arrivare, il costo si aggira intorno ai 110 euro (9500R).

Known by various names, including Ceylon, Sri Lanka is an island off the southeastern coast of the Indian subcontinent. This proximity, and its teardrop shape, have made that it is also called teardrop of India.

The origin of the Sanskrit word Lamka, Island that shines, is yet another name by which it is known this pearl of the Indian Ocean.

Departure from Rome by a direct flight to Colombo. Once there, we reached Galle with a car with driver. The distance is about 119 km, we bring you around 3 hours to get there, the cost is around 110 euro (9500R).

Situata nella punta sud occidentale dell’isola, Galle è una delle città più importanti, con una popolazione che arriva fino a 100.000 abitanti.

La città vecchia, patrimonio dell’Unesco, è protetta dall’antica fortificazione del XVI secolo, che è oggi una delle fortezze europee più grandi, rimaste in Asia.

Located on the southwestern tip of the island, Galle is one of the most important cities with a population of up to 100,000.

The old town, Unesco World Heritage Site, is protected by the ancient fortification of the sixteenth century which is, today, one of the largest european fortresses, remained in Asia.

Da sempre, Galle fu un importante porto, anche ben prima delle dominazioni occidentali. Greci, persiani, arabi, malesi mantenevano con la città importanti rapporti commerciali.

Nel XVI secolo, Galle passò sotto la dominazione portoghese e, successivamente, sotto il comando della Compagnia Olandese delle Indie Orientale che costruì la fortezza. Nel 1796, con l’arrivo dei britannici, il principale porto divenne quello di Colombo. La fortezza di Galle perse le sue funzioni di difesa per diventare centro amministrativo della città.

Galle has been an important port, even well before the rulers of the West. Greeks, Persians, Arabs, Malays have maintained trading relations with the city.

In the sixteenth century, Galle came under Portuguese rule and then under the command of the Dutch East India Company East who built the fortress. In 1796, with the arrival of the British, became the main port of Colombo. The fort of Galle lost its defense functions to become the administrative center of the city.

Affascinante anche il faro che si raggiunge percorrendo parte delle mura della fortezza ed alcune chiese, segni distintivi della dominazione europea.

Charming also the lighthouse that can be reached through part of the walls of the fortress and some churches, hallmarks of European domination.

All’interno della città vecchia, potrete girare tra i diversi vicoletti. Qui si concentra la maggior parte delle guesthouse e dei ristoranti. Al di fuori delle mura, si sviluppa la nuova Galle.

Camminare sulla fortezza vi permetterà di ammirare tutta Galle.

Inside the old city, there are many different alleyways. Here is concentrated the majority of guesthouses and restaurants. Outside the walls, spread the new city of Galle.

Walking on the fortress, you can admire all Galle.

Noi abbiamo alloggiato alla Fort Inn Guest House (25€ a notte senza colazione).

Galle, inoltre, ospita un importante stadio di Cricket, sport nazionale: il Galle International Stadium. Camminando sarà facile trovare ragazzi che giocano e si allenano.

We stayed at the Fort Inn Guest House (25 € for night without breakfast).

Galle is also home to an important stadium of Cricket, the national sport: the Galle International Stadium. Walking, will be easy to find guys that play it.

Il giorno dopo si parte, in pullman, direzione Mirissa (dovete prendere il bus diretto a Matara – 55R a persona).

The day after we leave, by bus, direction Mirissa (you have to take the bus to Matara – 55R per person).

Mirissa è un posto bellissimo; trascorrere qualche giorno in questa località di mare, vi piacerà sicuramente. Nonostante la stagione non fosse la migliore, a febbraio l’acqua è una tavola, la nostra permanenza qui è stata una delle migliori di tutta la vacanza.

Ancora lontana dal turismo eccessivo, conserva il suo originario fascino. Tuttavia, troverete moltissimi edifici e strutture in costruzione.

Mirissa is a very beautiful place; spend a few days in this seaside city is really a pleasure. Although the season was not the best, in February the sea is calm, our stay here was one of the best of the whole holiday.

Still far from excessive tourism, it retains its original charm. However, you will find many buildings and structures under construction.

Noi abbiamo dormito alla Thitira Guest House (2500R a notte, senza colazione), a circa 500 m dalla spiaggia.

Immancabili, simbolo dello Sri lanka i pescatori sui trampoli.

We stayed at the Guest House Thitira (2500R per night without breakfast), about 500 m from the beach.

E già, qui i pescatori preferiscono stare appollaiati tutto il giorno su queste pertiche, lanciando la propria lenza e aspettando che qualche pesce abbocchi!

Here, the fishermen prefer be perched all day on these poles, launching his own line and waiting for some fish to bite!

Si tratta di un tipo di pesca molto antico e sicuramente non facile, rispetto a quella tradizionale.  Le posizioni dei trampoli hanno un grande valore e si tramandano di padre in figlio.

A Mirissa non dovrete far altro che rilassarvi, in totale relax.

Dal tramonto alla sera, sulla spiaggia troverete locali con tavoli proprio sulla sabbia dove cenare a lume di candela o semplicemente bere qualcosa. Il rumore delle onde ed il paesaggio vi faranno da contorno: eccezionale.

It is a type of fishing very old and definitely not easy, compared to the traditional one. The positions of the stilts have great value and are handed down from father to son.

In Mirissa you will not have to do anything but relax yourself in total relaxation.

From dusk to night, on the beach you will find many bars with tables right on the sand where you can dine by candlelight or just have a drink. The sound of the waves and the scenery will surround you: amazing!

 Anche qui, troverete sicuramente qualcuno che gioca a cricket.

Here, too, you will surely find someone who plays cricket.

Fatevi qualche passeggiata e ammirate la bellezza del luogo.

We suggest to do some walk on the beach and admire the beauty of the place.

Da Mirissa, potrete facilmente andare a visitare in giornata una famosa piantagione di thè, proprio nei dintorni: ‘Virgin White Tea’

Noi abbiamo scelto di raggiungerla con un tuk tuk (1500R A/R), per ammirare meglio il paesaggio circostante.

From Mirissa, you can easily go to visit, in the day, a famous tea plantation, that of the ‘Virgin White Tea’.

We have chosen to reach it with a tuk tuk (1500R A / R), for a better look at the surrounding landscape.

Arrivati alla piantagione, abbiamo fatto un bel giro tra i vari campi, accompagnati da una guida che ci ha spiegato tutto il processo di produzione del tè. Al termine, potrete assaggiare tutta la gamma dei tè prodotti, scegliendo e volendo anche comprando il vostro preferito!

Arrived at the plantation, we had a nice tour of the various fields, accompanied by a guide who explained the whole process of tea production. At the end, you can sample the full range of tea products, choosing and buying your favorite!

A malincuore lasciamo Mirissa e, in autobus, raggiungiamo Tangalle (bus fino a Matara  23R a testa, 20 min. di viaggio; poi altro bus fino a Tangalla 64R a testa, 1 h e 20 min).

Reluctantly, we leave Mirissa and, by bus, we arrived at Tangalle (bus to Matara 23R head, 20 minutes travelling; then another bus to Tangalla 64R head, 1 hr 20 min).

Proseguendo lungo la costa sud, questa località non dista molto da Mirissa.

Non essendo la stagione ideale per visitarla, non era per niente affollata…anzi, la spiaggia era praticamente tutta per noi… bellissima.

Continuing along the south coast, this resort is not far from Mirissa.

Not being the ideal season to visit, it was not crowded  … in fact, the beach was pretty much all to ourselves … very beautiful.

Lunghe passeggiate, tra bagni e sole, ci portano all’interno, distanti dalla spiaggia.

Trascorriamo qui solo una notte presso la Starfish Guest House (3000R a notte), la mattina seguente si riparte, questa volta in macchina (5 h, 15000R), direzione Arugam Bay, la patria dei surfisti!

We spend there only one night, at the Starfish Guest House (3000R per night). The next morning we leave, by car (5 h, 15000R), directed to Arugam Bay, the home of surfers!

Nella costa sud-orientale dello Sri Lanka, finalmente il versante più favorevole per il mese di agosto, Arugam Bay è considerata uno dei principali località per il surf.

In quei giorni, infatti,  si svolgeva una competition al livello mondiale che ha reso ancora più difficoltosa la ricerca di un alloggio, ma che ha riempito la spiaggia e la cittadina di surfisti!

Dunque, due notti, due strutture diverse…fortunatamente, in centro,  vicine tra loro e al mare. La prima presso l’Arugam Bay Surf Resort (4500R a notte, senza colazione) e la seconda al Deans Beach Hotel Point View (3500R, senza colazione)

La spiaggia è ampia e lunga, ed è davvero caratteristica.

In the south-eastern coast of Sri Lanka, on the side most favorable for the month of August, Arugam Bay is considered one of the leading locations for surfing.

In those days, in fact, there was a word competition which made it even more difficult to find an accommodation, but which filled the beach and the town of surfers!

So, two nights, two different structures … luckily, in the center, close to to the sea. The first was the Arugam Bay Surf Resort (4500R per night, without breakfast) and the second  the Deans Beach Hotel View Point (3500R, without breakfast)

The beach is wide and long, and it’s really characteristic.

In ogni momento qualcuno o qualcosa cattureranno la vostra attenzione., a partire dalle numerosissime barche dei pescatori…

At any time, someone or something will catch your attention., like the numerous fishing boats …

…dalla gente locale…

…the local people … …

…dai monaci

…the monks …

In acqua, noterete gruppetti di surfisti “appollaiati” ciascuno sulla propria tavola in attesa dell’onda perfetta.

In the water, you’ll see groups of surfers, each on their surfboard, waiting for the perfect wave.

Rispetto alla spiaggia principale, con il vento più debole, girando l’angolo, dove le onde sono perfette, potrete ammirare il surf più bello.

Compared to the main beach, with the wind weaker, turning the corner, with the perfect waves, you can admire the most beautiful surf.

Lasciata Arugam Bay, ci spostiamo verso nord, a Trincomalee e più precisamente nella splendida Uppuveli. Per arrivare a destinazione decidiamo di dividere la macchina con una coppia di francesi, anche loro diretti lì. Sveglia alle 7 e partenza; il viaggio durerà circa 5 ore e mezza (16000R totali da dividere per due coppie).

A Trincomalee passiamo solo per prelevare e cambiare i soldi. Una volta ad Uppuveli, salutiamo i francesi ed iniziamo la ricerca di un alloggio che, anche questa volta, non si rivela semplice. Alla fine, però, le nostre fatiche, vengono ricompensate da un posticino meraviglioso, nel quale abbiamo lasciato il cuore e al quale ripensiamo spesso.

Leave Arugam Bay, we move to the north, to Trincomalee and more precisely in the beautiful Uppuveli. To get to the destination we decided to share the car with a french couple, they too headed there. Wake up at 7 and departure; the trip will take about 5 and a half hours (16000R total divided by two couples).

We passed at Trincomalee  only to withdraw and change money. Once in Uppuveli, we left the French couple  and begin the search for an accommodation which, again, has not been easy. In the end, however, our efforts are rewarded by a wonderful little place, where we left the heart and to whom we think often.

Decidiamo di trascorrere qui tre notti, la nostra permanenza di rivelerà perfetta.

La guesthouse era il Club Dive Paradise (6000R a notte, senza colazione).

Direttamente sulla spiaggia, la nostra camera era semplice ma con ogni confort, bagno ed aria condizionata.

In tre giorni non abbiamo mai messo le scarpe…sempre scalzi ed in costume.

La cosa più bella era svegliarsi, tuffarsi e fare colazione.

Il mare? da sogno!

We decided to spend there three nights.

The guesthouse was the Club Dive Paradise (6000R per night without breakfast).

Directly on the beach, our room was simple but with all confort, bathroom and air conditioning.

In three days we did not put the shoes … always barefoot and in costume.

The best thing was in the morning: dive and breakfast.

The sea? a dream!!

Nonostante la stagione fosse quella giusta per questa parte dell’isola, sulla spiaggia i turisti erano davvero pochi.

Per lo più gli abitanti del posto…

Although the season was right for this part of the island, on the beach were very few tourists.

Mostly  the locals …

…e qualche pescatore. Una sera tutta la spiaggia, turisti e srilankesi insieme, si sono cimentati in una sorta di pesca di gruppo, raccogliendo lunghissime cime buttate in mare.

..and some fisherman. One evening the whole beach, tourists and Sri Lankans together, have ventured into some sort of group fishing, gathering the long tops thrown into the sea.

Il risultato non è stato niente male.

L’operazione è durata un pochino…nell’attesa si è fatto buio.

The result was not bad.

Una volta sulla spiaggia, con l’aiuto di bastoncini, si cerca di estrarre i pesci dalla rete.

Once on the beach, with the help of sticks, they tryed  to pull the fishes from the net.

Pigeon Island è una piacevole escursione che potrete fare da Uppuveli.  Basterà raggiungere la vicina Nilaveli e da li imbarcarsi, la distanza è solo di 1 km.

L’isola, merita una visita.

Prendete un tuk tuk da Uppuveli fino a Nilaveli Beach (500R a tratta), il biglietto per l’isola costa 4200R per due persone, quello della barca per arrivarci 1800R A/R per due persone).

Pigeon Island is a pleasant hike that you can do, in a day, from Uppuveli. Just reach the near Nilaveli and from there embark, the distance is only 1 km away.

The island is worth a visit.

Take a tuk tuk from Uppuveli to Nilaveli Beach (500R way), the ticket for the island coast 4200R for two people, the one of the boat to get there 1800R A / R for two people).

L’isola è uno dei parchi nazionali marini dello Sri Lanka.

Conserva tantissimi coralli, i resti migliori della barriera dello Sri Lanka.

The island is one of the marine national parks in Sri Lanka.

It preserves lots of corals, the best remains of the barrier reef of Sri Lanka.

Prima di essere dichiarata parco nazionale nel 2003, l’isola era stata denominata santuario nel 1963.

Before being declared a national park in 2003, the island, in 1963,  was known as sanctuary.

Tra un bagno e l’altro, abbiamo avvistato anche uno squaletto!!

E’ giorno di partenza: prossima tappa Jaffna, nella parte più settentrionale dello Sri Lanka.

Per raggiungerla, prendiamo una macchina. Il viaggio durerà 5 h per un costo di 18000R.

Lungo il tragitto troverete numerosi posti di blocco: tanti anni di isolamento e di guerra civile hanno allontanato questa zona dal resto del paese. Il turismo è ancora parecchio limitato, la gente, prevalentemente di origine tamil, è piuttosto schiva e riservata. Nulla a che vedere con la disinvoltura degli srilankesi del sud.

Il fascino del posto, in realtà, è proprio questo, arrivandoci vi accorgerete che il nord è un mondo a parte, separato dal resto dello Sri Lanka.

Tutta la regione sta lentamente risollevandosi da tutti questi anni di sofferenze e devastazioni.

 Jaffna, la capitale del nord, è un mix tra stile coloniale e cultura tamil.

Abbiamo trascorso qui 3 notti presso la guesthouse Theresa Inn (2700R a notte).

Considerate che in questa zona ancora non ci sono tante strutture alberghiere. Questa, tutto sommato, poteva andare.

Nonostante il caldo micidiale, iniziamo la visita della città. Prima tappa: il Fort dal quale si ha una prima panoramica della penisola. Opera dei portoghesi, venne costruito nel 1618, successivamente alla conquista del territorio.

It’s departure day: next stop Jaffna, in the northern part of Sri Lanka.

To get there, we took a car. The trip will last for 5 h at a cost of 18000R.

Along the way you will find numerous checkpoints: so many years of isolation and civil war have closed off this area from the rest of the country. Tourism is still quite limited, local people, mostly of Tamil origin, is quite shy and reserved. Nothing to do with the self-confidence of Sri Lankans in the south.

The charm is just that: getting there, you will find that the north is a world apart, separated from the rest of Sri Lanka.

The entire region is slowly rebounded from all these years of suffering and devastation.

 Jaffna, the capital of the north, is a mix of colonial and Tamil culture.

We spent there 3 nights at the guesthouse Theresa Inn (2700R per night).

Considering that in this area there are still many hotels, our choise was good. 

Despite the deadly heat, we begin our tour of the city.

The first stop is the Fort from which you have a first overview of the peninsula. It was built in 1618 by the Portuguese, after the conquest of the territory.

L’area circostante è piuttosto desolata, forse per via dei lavori in corso.

The surrounding area is pretty desolate, perhaps because of the work in progress.

Dopo il Fort è la volta della bella biblioteca nazionale, sede oggi dell’università.

After the Fort was the turn of the beautiful national library, now home to the university.

Rinomata a livello mondiale, conteneva circa 90.000, andò distrutta in un incendio nel 1981 a seguito dei disordini filo-governativi.

Continuiamo a piedi a scoprire la città….

Renowned worldwide, contained about 90,000, has been destroyed in a fire in 1981 because of pro-government unrest.

We continue by foot exploring the city ….

Camminando, raggiungiamo il Jaffna Market.

Walking, we reach the Jaffna Market.

Nel tardo pomeriggio, raggiungiamo il Nallur Temple, uno dei più importanti tempi indù del distretto.

In the late afternoon, we reach the Nallur Temple, one of the most important Hindu temples in the district.

Erano le 17:00 e fortunatamente, proprio a quell’ora, si svolgeva l’ultima Puja della giornata. Assistere è stato emozionante. Gli uomini devono entrare a torso nudo. (tra le 13:00 e le 15:00 il tempio è chiuso).

We went there at 17:00 pm and luckily, just at that time, was held the last Puja. Attending, was exciting. Men have to get shirtless. (between 13:00 and 15:00 the temple is closed).

A differenza degli altri templi indù, generalmente molto colorati, questo si presenta monocolore…davvero affascinante.

La mattina, in tuk tuk (2500R), si parte in direzione Nagadeepa Island (considerate 1h per andare e 1h per tornare). Il tempo impiegato verrà ricompensato dalla vista di tutta la penisola di Jaffna e dei suoi villaggi. A noi è piaciuta molto.

Unlike other Hindu temples, generally very colorful, this is totally monochrome and it’s really fascinating.

In the morning, by tuk tuk (2500R), we went to Nagadeepa Island  (consider 1h to go  and 1h to go back). The time spent will be rewarded by the sight of the whole peninsula of Jaffna and that of its villages. We loved it.

Per raggiungere l’isola, inoltre, dovrete prendere una barca. Il tuk tuk vi aspetterà al molo, all’orario che deciderete.

To reach the island, in addition, you’ll have to take a boat. The tuk tuk will be waiting at the dock.

L’isola è molto bella, soprattutto per via della sua atmosfera così religiosa. E’ sede, infatti, di due templi:  il Nagadeepa Vihara, uno dei luoghi più santi visitati dai buddisti …

Entrambe bellissimi, vi affascineranno.

Il giorno seguente, ripartiamo, in macchina, in direzione Anuradhapura. Il viaggio dura 4ore e mezza e costa 18000R.

The next day, we leave by car to Anuradhapura. The trip takes 4 hours and a half and costs 18000R.
