se sei come me, avrai forse procrastinato per i preparativi halloweeneschi. questo anno, per la prima volta, mia figlia aveva una festa di halloween (dove abitiamo noi, non è molto festeggiato). aveva già un cappello da strega, ma mi sembrava un travestimento un po' troppo misero. quindi ho deciso di farle un mantello da strega. è un progetto molto semplice e mi piace molto questo tipo di travestimento perché è taglia unica (va benissimo sia a mia figlia che a me) quindi si può usare tantissime volte per diverse persone. anche tu hai bisogno di un costume lampo? c'è ancora tempo! ecco come ho fatto il mio!
if you're anything like me, you might've procratinated a bit for halloween. my daughter was invited to a halloween party for the first time this year (where we live it's not really celebrated). she already had a witch hat, but it really needed something more. so i decided to make her a witch cape. it's a really easy project and i love this type of costume because it's one-size (it fits both my daughter and me wonderfully) so you can use it loads of times for all different people. do you need a last-minute costume, too? there's still time! here's how i made mine!
il giorno prima della festa ho frugato fra le mie stoffe (pioveva a dirotto, quindi non avevo proprio voglia di uscire per comprare qualche tessuto) e ho trovato quello che mi sembrava di ricordare di avere: un rettangolo (circa 90 cm per 75 cm) di una stoffa nera con delle linee bianche disegnate appena appena, un po' ad effetto ragnatela. è una stoffa un po' come una flanella di cotone, ma piuttosto pesante. l'ho comprato 11 anni fa, il mio primo anno a napoli, per delle tende per bloccare la luce nella mia nuova camera oscura che avevo sistemato in casa. (una volta ero una appassionata per la fotografia in bianco e nero, compreso lo sviluppo e la stampa. arrivata la prima gravidanza, l'ho abbandonata. gli acidi e la gravidanza non vanno tanto bene insieme, nè il bisogno di avere blocchi di tempo senza interruzioni per la stampa con le esigenze dei figli.)
i rummaged around through my fabric stash the day before the party (it was pouring, so i wasn't exactly in the mood to go out to buy new fabric) and i found what i thought i remembered having: a rectangle (about 90 cm by 75 cm) of a black fabric with thin/dotted white lines going across it, sort of spider-web-looking. it's sort of like a cotton flannel, but heavier. i bought it 11 years ago, my first year in naples, for light-blocking curtains in my new darkroom i'd set up in my apartment. (i was once very passionate about black and white photography, including developing and printing. but i abandoned it once my first pregnancy rolled around. chemicals and pregnancy don't mix well. nor do the need for long amount of uninterrupted time for printing and having children.)

l'ho stirato e riparato il meglio possibile. non mi piaceva, ma ho pensato che un mantello da strega non dovrebbe essere perfetto, no? in più, il tutto mi sembrava un po' troppo tetra per una bimba simpatica di 6 anni, anche se serviva per halloween. e anche un po' noioso.
i ironed it and mended it as well as i could. i didn't like it, but i thought that perhaps a witch's cape shouldn't be perfect anyway, right? also, it seemed a bit too dark for a sweet 6-year-old girl, even if it was for halloween. and a bit too boring, too.
quindi ho frugato di nuovo fra le stoffe e ho preso degli avanzi belle e colorate per fare delle finte toppe. ho usato il heat-n-bond lite (come ho fatto per le tovagliette bilingue) per fare delle applicazioni. le ho fatte un po' irregolari e con le cuciture ben a vista apposto e un paio di volte le ho sovrapposte, ad esempio qui, dove ho coperto il tessuto strappato.
so i rummaged around again and found some nice and colored fabric scraps to make fake patches out of. i used heat-n-bond lite (as i did for my bilingual placemats) to make appliqués. i made them a bit uneven and with the stitching easily visible on purpose and also overlapped a few of the patches, for example here, where i covered up the ripped fabric.
poi ho rifinito i bordi del rettangolo su tre lati piegando due volte e cucendo. sul quarto (lungo) lato ho fatto il canaletto per il nastro da tenere al collo. ho trovato questo nastro piuttosto giusto per halloween nella mia collezione. ho tagliato 3 metri e l'ho piegato a metà unendo le estremità al centro (dove c'è la cucitura a zig-zag). poi ho cucito diritto lungo ciascun lato per tutta la lunghezza, facendo una cordicina di 1,5 metro a doppia faccia. in alternativa, si può tagliare solo 1,5 metri di nastro e usarlo così o piegarlo a metà nel senso della lunghezza in modo che viene la metà della altezza del nastro. mi piaceva il disegno sul mio nastro, ma non si vedeva bene piegandolo.
then i hemmed the edges of the rectangle on three sides, folding over twice and sewing. i sewed the casing for the ribbon to keep it around the neck on the fourth (long) side. i found this halloween-y ribbon in my stash. i cut 3 meters of it and folded it in half by bringing the ends together towards the center (where i zig-zagged them down). the i sewed a straight stitch down both sides of the ribbon, thereby making a double-faced ribbon 1.5 meters long. or you could just cut 1.5 meters of ribbon and use it as is or fold it in half the long way so that it ends up only half as wide as the original. i liked the design on my ribbon, but it got too disturbed folding it in half.

la streghetta è stata molto contenta e per fortuna le è andato perfettamente (l'ho cucito mentre stava a scuola).
my little witch was super excited and luckily it fit her perfectly (i sewed it while she was at school).
