mini-lettini - mini-beds

è tutto iniziato quando ho visto questi topini con lettini fatti dalle scatoline di mentine altoids (il tipo che usato per le mie acquerelle da viaggio) su facebook. ho subito pensato, "ma stiamo scherzando?! mia figlia uscirebbe pazza per queste cose!"  chi vuole può comprare il cartamodello, ma volevo fare un po' alla me.
it all started when i saw these little mice in little beds made from altoids mint tins (the type i used for my travel watercolors) on facebook. i immediately thought, "are you kidding me?! my little girl would go wild for those!" it's possible to buy the pattern, but i wanted to make them my own way.

avevo degli avanzi della stoffa "kitty kaleidoscope" della marca northcott che avevo usato anni fa per salviette lavabili per mia figlia (che uso ora con mio figlio), e anche pezzetti di spugna di cotone e flanella di cotone, quindi ho deciso di usarli per la biancheria e di fare dei gattini imbottiti con i disegni del tessuto. ma prima... i lettini.
i had some scraps of a northcott fabric called "kitty kaleidoscope" that i'd used years ago for my daughter's cloth baby wipes (which i'm still using now with my son), and some other scraps of cotton terry and flannel, so i decided to use those for the bed linens and make stuffed cats out of the printed fabric. but first... the beds.

ho deciso di colorarli con la vernice spray. erano molto belli fino a quando si cominciava ad asciugarsi la vernice e si toglieva da sola a scaglie.
i decided to spray paint them. they looked great until they started drying and the paints started peeling off.

ho cercato di rimuovere le scaglie il meglio possibile, ma rimaneva bruttissimo. poi ho fatto una prova a verniciare la scatolina con degli acrilici e un pennello. non copriva bene e si vedevano delle strisce. come ultima prova ho applicato dei strati di carta velina colorata con la colla dilluita, come avevamo fatto per fare un vaso carino l'anno scorso, ma si sono formate delle macchie di ruggine. alla fine, tutti e sette scatoline sono rimaste nel bidone della spazzatura. che peccato.
i tried taking off as much of the peeling gunk as possible, but they looked awful. then i attempted painting a tin with a paintbrush and acrylic paints. it didn't cover the tin well and was streaky. as a last attempt i applied strips of colored tissue paper with dilute glue as we'd done to make a cute vase last year, but spots of rust formed. in the end, all seven tins ended up in the trash. sob!

per fortuna mi rimanevano qualche scatolina ancora, quindi le ho coperte di un nastro colorato largo dentro e fuori e un nastro più sottile tutto intorno con il vinavil.
luckily i still had a few tins left, so i glued a wide colored ribbon on the top and inside and a more narrow ribbon all around.

i gatti erano troppo grandi per le scatoline, quindi li ho cuciti più piccoli, tenendo intatti i tratti dei visini e le orecchie. per le code ho fatto delle trecce con il filo da ricamo (come la lingua di questo serpente).
the cats were too big for the tins, so i sewed them smaller, keeping the little faces and ears intact. i braided embroidery thread for their tails (like i did with this snake's tongue).

per una bambina molto carina volevo anche fare un amichetto che assomiglia al suo cane. ho deciso di usare avanzi da maglioni di lana infeltriti e di ricamare i tratti. (potete scaricare la forma qui.) il cane in questione è di un colore difficile da riprodurre, ma ha qualcosa di simile ai cerchi marroni intorno agli occhi. solo che nel mio cagnolino, sembrano i bianchi degli occhi. ma mi sembrava di avere bisogno di un amico, quindi ho fatto la mia versione della bimba in forma cagnolina, tutta colorata e bellina! come ultimi tocchi, ho cucito le orecchie verso giù e ho aggiunto la lettere iniziale dei loro nomi alle medagliette.
for a very sweet little girl i also wanted to make a little buddy that looks like her dog. i decided to use scraps of felted wool sweaters and to embroider the features. (you can download the shape here.) the dog in question is a sort of hard color to reproduce, but has something like brownish rings around its eyes. except in my dog they look more like the whites of the eyes. but i felt like he needed a friend, so i made my dog version of the little girl, all colored and cute! as final touches i sewed down the floppy ears and added the first letters of their names on their dog tags.

anche i cani hanno bisogno di un letto caldo e comodo!
even dogs need  a warm and comfy bed!

ah, dimenticavo i letti. ho fatto dei cuscini imbottiti e poi delle copertine a due lati con la flanella di cotone. i materassi, invece, hanno in mezzo ai due lati di flanella un'altro strato di spugna di cotone per renderli più doppi e rigidi. ho cucito i bordi delle copertine e dei materassi con la macchina taglia e cuci.
ah, i was forgetting about the beds. i made stuffed pillow and then blankets with two sides of flannel. i made the materasses the same way, but sandwiching in an extra layer of terry cloth to make them thicker and more rigid. i sewed the edges with an overlocker.

ho regalato un set completo sia a mia figlia che a  mio figlio e se ne sono subito innamorati entrambi. sofia, come fa sempre, ha preso una gonnellina di qualche altro giocattolino e l'ha messo al suo gattino. 
i gave a complete set to both my daughter and my son and they both love them. sofia, as always, took a little skirt from some other mini-toy and dressed up her cat in it.
