organizziamoci! - let's get organized!

sono sicura che molta gente rimane sconvolta quando vengono a casa nostra per la prima volta. a parte i disegni sulle pareti, i peli del gatto sul divano e i quadri particolari appesi, c'è una confusione totale. di solito ci sono pile di carte, giocattoli, libri e tutto quello che potresti immaginare su ogni centimetro di ogni superficie. non solo grazie ai bimbi, ma anche a noi grandi. diciamo che nessuno di noi quattro è organizzato di natura.
i'm sure a lot of people are pretty shocked when they walk in our home for the first time. besides the drawings on the walls, the cat hair on the couch and the odd paintings hanging up, there's massive chaos. generally there are piles of papers, toys, books and everything else imaginable covering every centimeter of the place. thanks not only to the kids, but also we big folks. suffice it to say, none of the four of us is particularly neat.

ma poi la confusione arriva ad un certo punto e non respiro più. si perdono le cose, le pile cadono, si sente soffocato dall'eccesso di roba in giro. poi crea anche una confusione mentale e finiva che non riuscivo mai a ricordare le cose. quindi ho deciso di cambiare un po' le abitudini. per prima, di cominciare a mettere le cose subito al loro posto, anche se ci vogliono 30 secondi in più e qualcuno mi sta chiamando. per secondo, ho raccolto le tantissime buste di carta dalle bollette e altre carte sparse e ho cominciato a tagliare.
but then the confusion gets to a certain point and i get overwhelmed by it. things get lost, the piles fall, i feel suffocated by all the extra stuff hanging around. then i also feel mentally confused and i can't remember anything. so i decided to change habits a bit. first of all, to start putting things away immediately, even if it takes an extra 30 seconds and someone is calling for me. second of all, i gathered the mass of envelopes from the bills and other pieces of paper scattered around and i started cutting.

ho tolto la plastica delle finestrelle delle buste (destinazione: l'indifferenziata) e le parti della carta coperte di scritti o segni su entrambi i lati (destinazione: la carta). ho tagliato la carta recuperabile almeno su un lato a delle misure più o meno uniformi. poi ho dipinto un pezzo di cartone e ci ho fissato sopra i mucchi di foglietti con quei morsetti neri.
i removed those plastic windows from the envelopes (destination: trash) and the parts of paper covered with writing or marked up on both sides (destination: paper recycling bin). i cut up all the paper that was usable at least on one side to more or less uniform sizes. then i painted a piece of cardboard and used those black clips to attach the piles of paper.

e ora ho appeso ad una libreria in cucina una specie di bacheca. scrivo elenchi di spesa per i diversi posti dove facciamo la spesa (supermercato locale, ipermercato, negozio di alimenti naturali, farmacia, ecc.) su foglietti diversi e poi li stacco quando vado in quei posti. o ci scrivo sopra degli appunti che mi servono in cucina o altro. ad esempio, nella foto sopra questa qui, si vedono scritti i miei appunti per i tutu che ho fatto sul foglietto in alto a sinistra. in questa foto, invece, si vede la mia nota di comprare gli ingredienti per fare l'arancello. (e si capisce guardando le date di quei progetti, che ho fatto questa bacheca a febbraio!) con questo sistema, già cominciavo a tenere le cose un po' più sotto controllo in modo completamente ricicloso e a costo zero.
so now i have a sort of message board hanging on a bookshelf in our kitchen. i write shopping lists for the different places we shop (neighborhood supermarket, mega supermarket, natural foods store, farmacy, etc.) on different pieces and then i take them off when i go to those places. or i write down notes to myself for things i'm cooking or whatever else. for example, in the photo above this one, you can see my notes for the tutus i made on the paper in the upper left corner. in this photo above you can see my note to buy the ingredients for arancello. (and you can tell by looking at the dates of those projects that i made this message board in february!) using this system, i started being able to keep things a little more under control in a completely upcycled and cost-free way.

ma non bastava. c'era troppo da ricordare e la mia mente a volte sembrava sul punto di esplodere. poi ho visto per caso questo post di passionate homemaking. anche se non mi piaceva lo stile e l'uso dei fogli prestampati, l'idea di fare una specie di grande diario per organizzare le cose della casa ma non solo mi sembrava ottima. quindi ho preso un sottile raccoglitore ad anello, l'ho riempito con diverse buste trasparenti per i fogli A4, e ho cominciato a fare categorie su ogni foglio e di riempirli con tutte le cose che mi frullavano per la testa, facendo una grande confusione mentale.
but that wasn't enough. i had too much to remember and my mind sometimes seemed about to explode. then i happened upon this post at passionate homemaking. even if i don't love the style used there nor the use of the printed pages, the idea of making a big organizer for all the things for inside the home and out seemed pretty good. so i took a thin ring binder, filled it with those transparent pockets to fit sheets of paper inside, and i started making categories on each piece of paper and filling them up with all the things going through my head, making my head ache so much.

la prima pagina è sempre "to do", cioè le cose da fare. ed è sempre strapieno. quindi ho cominciato a mettere una stellina vicino alle cose da fare in giornata e ho fatto un altro foglio sul retro (sempre nella stessa busta trasparente, ma visibile girando pagina) con le cose da fare prima il mese seguente. altre pagine: cibi che il piccolo poteva mangiare, cibi per il piccolo congelati, ricette stagionali da fare (ogni volta che vado a cucinare, mi viene un vuoto. "che cosa cucino?!"), attività da fare con i bimbi, idee da sperimentare per i miei prodotti lavabili, cose che avevo ordinato online che dovevano ancora arrivare, progetti creativi che voglio fare. una busta designata ai foglietti di appunti e altre cose piccole che non volevo perdere. qui sopra si vede la pagina con le cose di cui voglio scrivere sul blog (in questo caso la stellina vuole dire che devo ancora fare le foto). e ci tengo sempre una penna dentro la prima busta in modo che posso scrivere gli appunti al volo. a volte è un po' ingombrante, ma funziona, tengo tutto in un unico posto, posso sempre cambiare le foglie, non mi dimentico più le cose e ho la mente molto più libera a fare tutte le cose che devo/voglio fare!
the first page is always "to do." and it's always filled up. so i started putting a star next to the things to do that day and put another page behind it (in the same transparent pocket, but seen only by turning the page) for the things to do the next month. other pages: food that the little guy could eat, frozen food for the little guy, seasonal recipes to do (every time i go to cook, i get a blank. "and what can i cook?!"), activities to do with the kids, things to experiment with my cloth products, things that i ordered online that still need to arrive, creative ideas to try. a pocket filled with little notes and other pieces of paper that i don't want to lose. above you can see the page with the things i want to blog about (in this case the star means that i still need to take pictures of that particular thing). and i always keep a pen inside the first pocket so i can write down notes quickly. it's sometimes a bit cumbersome, but it works, i have everything in one place, i can always change the sheets of paper, i don't forget things all the time and my mind is much freer to do all the things i need/want to do!
una digressione: che ne dite della mia calligrafia in queste foto? mi affascina sempre vedere il modo di scrivere a mano delle persone le quali parole sono abituata a vedere sullo schermo in font anonimi. non so come interpretare la calligrafia delle persone, ma la trovo molto interessante guardare lo stesso!
an aside: what do you think about my writing in these pictures? i'm always fascinated by seeing the handwriting of people whose words i'm used to seeing on a sceen in anonymous fonts. i don't know how to analyze people's writing, but i still find it pretty interesting all the same!
un'altra digressione: un altro modo per capire che stavo preparando questo post a febbraio... i kiwi! sono diventati delle marmellate interessanti e volevo bloggare le ricette che ho fatto (come ho fatto per le diverse marmellate di arancia), ma non ce l'ho fatta e poi mi sembrava assurda scrivere sui kiwi fuori stagione. quindi il post sui kiwi dovrà aspettare febbraio prossimo! ;)
another aside: another way to figure out that i was getting this post ready in febrauary... the kiwis! they went on to become some interesting marmalades and i wanted to blog about the recipes i did (as i did for the various orange marmalades), but i didn't get around to it and then it seems ridiculous to write about kiwis when they were out of season. so the kiwi post will have to wait til next february! ;)
