Painting of the week: Les amantes

Protagonista della rubrica, nella settimana che precede l'avvento della festa degli innamorati, una celebre opera del pittore belga Renè Margitte.Ho voluto selezionare un dipinto che non fosse eccessivamente romantico, perché ci facesse riflettere sulla difficoltà e sulla natura complicata dei rapporti interpersonali.L'amore è sì gioia per il cuore e capace di produrre effetti positivi per ognuno di noi, ma non è sempre, o almeno non soltanto questo. 
Il realismo di questo autore infatti, rende perfettamente lo stato di angoscia in cui versano le due figure. Il loro volto è coperto da un lenzuolo. Questo dettaglio, senz'altro il più significativo presente nel dipinto, esprime i sentimenti di angoscia e malessere che il pittore visse dopo la prematura scomparsa della madre, che si tolse la vita quando egli aveva appena 14 anni. Secondo molti, l'ossessione delle lenzuola e dei volti coperti, deriva dall'associazione a questo evento tragico: prima di gettarsi nel fiume Sambre infatti, la donna si avvolse la testa con dei panni. Ma oltre a questa chiave di lettura, credo che ci siano dietro molti altri significati. Ad esempio l'impossibilità che gli amanti hanno nel comunicare tra di loro, per cui l'attività sensoriale viene tristemente interrotta dall'ostacolo fisico del tessuto, che non gli consente di osservarsi, toccarsi, baciarsi.Un interpretazione in cui l'amore non è sempre un sentimento facile da amministrare.La stessa inquietudine è trasmessa dagli abiti degli amanti, in netta composizione fra di loro: quello nero con cravatta scura del soggetto maschile, che identifica anche una sorta di volontario anonimato, quello rosso e sbracciato della donna, del quale impressione sicuramente il colore rosso, emblema della passione, del sangue, ma anche della morte.Lo scenario alle loro spalle riprende il medesimo motivo di patimento e tensione, che è possibile percepire anche dal gioco di chiaro-scuro che Magritte utilizza per imprimere all'opera carattere onirico e mistero, entrambi elementi comuni al surrealismo."Les amants" altro non è che la testimonianza di un amore ostaggio di se stesso, in cui nè il coinvolgimento tra i due, nè la potenza di questa comune passione valgono a liberarli da questo inesorabile stato di prigionìa.  
The protagonist of today, in the week before Valentine's Day advent, is a famous work of the Belgian painter Renè Margitte.I wanted to select a painting not overly romantic, to address and reflect the difficulties and complicated nature of interpersonal relationships.Love is yes joy for the heart, which can lead to benefits for all of us, but not always, or at least not only that.The realism of this author in fact, makes it perfectly the state of anguish faced by the two figures. Their faces are covered with a sheet. This detail, certainly the most significant in this painting, expresses the feelings of anxiety and discomfort that the painter lived after the untimely death of his mother, who took her own life when he was only 14 years old. According to many, the obsession of the sheets and covered faces, comes by the association to this tragic event: before emptying into the river Sambre in fact, the woman wrapped the head with cloths. But in addition to this reading, I think there are many other meanings behind. For example the impossibility that lovers have in communicating with each other, so the sensory activity is sadly interrupted by the physical obstacle of the tissue, which does not allow they to observe, touch, kiss.An interpretation in which love is not always an easy feeling to administer.The same concern is transmitted from the clothes of the lovers, in sharp composition between them: the black with dark tie of the male subject, which also identifies a kind of voluntary anonymity, the red and sleeveless woman, whose impression definitely red, emblem of passion, blood, but also of death.The scenario behind them takes the same reason of suffering and tension, which can be heard even from the play of light and dark that Magritte uses to give to the work dreamlike and mystery type, both common elements to surrealism."Les Amants" is none other than the testimony of a love hostage of itself, in which neither the involvement between the two, nor the power of this common passion apply to free them from this inexorable state of captivity.
