Painting of the week: Portrait of Marchesa Luisa Casati and the greyhound

Pittura profonda, tratti marcati e a momenti evanescenti, colori vividi in mezzo al grigiore, figure che si dissolvono nel loro stesso movimento. Questi sono solo alcuni dei dettagli che contraddistinguono la pittura del geniale Giovanni Boldini, pittore e restauratore italiano formatosi dapprima a Firenze e poi nei salotti della Belle Epòque, in cui belle donne abiti lussuosi e decoro sono i soggetti principali dei suoi ritratti.Nell'opera odierna infatti è protagonista una figura femminile molto influente negli ambienti artistici e letterari di questo periodo: la marchesa Luisa Casati, icona e musa di molteplici pittori e scrittori.In questo ritratto, la donna è ritratta assieme ad uno dei suoi levrieri, che fa addirittura pendant col suo meraviglioso abito. Il nero intenso della stoffa imprime personalità e fermezza alla donna, che trasmette un'eleganza composta, quasi severa. Il porpora dei fiori e della fodera sottogonna del vestito spezzano la rigidità dei colori, comunicando anche l'attenzione della donna nella scelta dei colori, mentre i guanti bianchi esaltano le sue mani lunghe ed affusolate, mani che sembrano avere il perfetto controllo su tutto, come sul suo educatissimo cane. Sguardo attento, pelle di porcellana ed accessori importanti come l'ampio cappello e il collo in volpe le regalano un'aria di gran classe e le pennellate di Boldini che dissolvono i contorni estremi della sua figura fanno il resto. Un'opera apparentemente semplice, ma che come tutte quelle realizzate dal pittore ferrarese trasmettono realismo se pur imprigionato in un'atmosfera surreale: la stessa che appartiene al fascino femminile, che attrae, distrae, ed ammalia in un piacevolissimo effetto artistico narcotizzante.

The intense black of the fabric gives personality and firmness to the woman, who transmits composed elegance, almost severe. The purple flowers and lining petticoat dress break the rigidity of colors, communicating the attention of women in the choice of colors, while white gloves exalt her long and slender hands that seem to have perfect control over everything, as on his composed dog. Watchful eyes, porcelain skin and important accessories such as the large hat and fox collar give her an air of class and Boldini brushstrokes that dissolve extreme boundaries of her figure, do the rest. A work seemingly simple, but like all those made by painter from Ferarra convey realism though imprisoned in a surreal atmosphere: the same one that belongs to feminine charm that attracts, distracts, and charms in a delightful artistic-narcotic effect.
