SPECIAL OPS ROMANCE...23 racconti in un solo libro per le patite del romantic suspense

Ecco un libro che, ci posso scommettere, in Italia non arriverà mai e quindi lo posso proporre solo a chi ha la buona abitudine, se sa l'inglese, di leggere i libri in lingua originale.
Perchè non arriverà mai? Perchè in Italia sembra si vendano bene solo romance storici o paranormali con, a sprazzi, qualche mystery dalla trama spesso più incentrata sull'investigazione che sulla storia d'amore.
Noi ci battiamo nel nostro piccolo perchè le cose cambino, perchè le lettrici italiane di romance possano avere l'opportunità di variare un po' i loro gusti, aprendosi anche a letture che non siano solo regency,vittoriane o su vampiri e simili. Ma per il momento questo offre il convento (leggi grandi editori) e di questo , a chi non può fare diversamente, tocca accontentarsi .
Per chi come me legge anche altri generi ed è patita di storie romantic suspense con protagonisti che siano preferibilmente Navy SEALS, DELTA Force, Special Ops, CIA.... alpha heroes,insomma, di prima catagoria, questo libro sembra proprio la lettura ideale, per passare queste pigre giornate di vacanza in compagnia di eroi romantici che fanno venire l'acquolina in bocca!

The Mammoth Book of SPECIAL OPS ROMANCE, sottotitolato: 23 passionate stories of hard-hitting love, è una super raccolta (oltre 500 pagine) di ben 23 racconti romantic suspense firmati da alcune tra le più famose autrici americane del genere. Anche questa raccolta è curata da Trisha Telep, che aveva curato altre due precedenti antologie di raconti, dedicate in quel caso al genere paranormale : The Mammoth Book of TimeTravel Romance e The Mammoth Book of Vampire Romance.
Come ho premesso questa antologia è dedicata a storie in cui l'eroe di turno appartiene a un corpo delle forza speciali americane: Navy SEALs, Delta Force, Air Force Para-Rescue, Green Berets, Army Rangers, ecc. e include racconti di autrici che, chi conosce il genere, avrà già letto o conoscerà per fama, come Laura Griffin, Marliss Melton, Cheyenne MacCray, Shannon K. Butcher, Stephanie Tyler, e Larissa Ione (che scrive con lo pseudonimo di Sydney Croft).
Mi piace l'idea di tante storie diverse, di tanti diversi eroi alpha, concentrati in un unico volume. Certo, i racconti brevi spesso hanno dei limiti,soprattutto se scritti da chi al racconto breve non è avezza. Possono essere poco significativi ,oppure piacerci ma indispettirci al tempo stesso,perchè di quella storia avremmo voluto leggere di più. Io guardo a questo genere di iniziative editoriali con la curiosità di leggere autrici che conosco ma, anche e soprattutto, quelle che non ho mai letto, nella speranza di trovare una storia, uno stile, che sappiano coinvolgermi a tal punto da aver voglia di leggere altro scritto da quella stessa penna.

MARLISS MELTON, una della mie autrici preferite presenti nella raccolta, ha pubblicato sul suo sito un estratto del suo racconto incluso nella raccolta: VeriSEAL.

LA STORIA: Libby Granger, non sposata e docente di letteratura, è lusingata quando un ex studente e Navy SEAL, Bruce Kimball, le chiede di uscire. Ma gli improbabili racconti di guerra di Bruce fanno venire presto a Libby dei sospetti sulla sua onestà e la spingono a consultare la VeriSEAL, un'organizzazione con lo scopo di smascherare le frodi e i falsi. Ed è presso l'organizzazione che Libby incontra un vero Navy SEAL,Todd Lawson, il quale scopre che Bruce Kimball non è solo un bugiardo ma anche un narcisista sociopatico che ha deciso di uccidere la sorella dell'uomo che gli ha rovinato la carriera nei corpi speciali. Quale saranno i risultati di questa scoperta? Un'immane tragedia o il vero eroe riuscirà all afine a catturare il cattivo e a conquistare la ragazza?

Wind chapped, with her hair in disarray, Libby slipped into the convenience store to return Lawson’s call. For privacy, she locked herself in the lady’s room.

He answered on the first ring. “Where are you?” he asked in the same deep voice she’d found so soothing, only this time it was tinged with urgency.

“I’m with Bruce,” she admitted. “I didn’t want to go with him, but I thought he’d be suspicious if I didn’t.”

“Go where?” Todd rapped.

“To the Cape Hatteras lighthouse.”

A heavy pause followed. “Are you there now?”

“No, we just left. We’re about to take the expressway off Interstate 64.” She stared wide-eyed at her wind-blown reflection. “Why? What did you find out?”

“Listen, I want you to distance yourself from him.”

His phone was breaking up. She wasn’t certain she had heard him right. “What did you say?”

“His real name is Mark Earnest. He attempted SEAL training in 2007 but he dropped upon request after—” His voice cut off suddenly.

“Are you still there?” she asked, reaching for the sink as the floor seemed to shift.

“He went back into the regular Navy, serving aboard the USS Monterey.” Todd’s voice came to her distinctly this time.

“Monterey? That’s my brother’s ship,” she realized with surprise.

“Yes. Earnest worked with your brother.”

“My brother knows Bruce—I mean, Earnest?” The name change was confusing.

“He’s been seeing you for the wrong reasons, Libby.”

The words echoed unpleasantly in her mind. “What do you mean? What reasons?”

“Just try to get—. Call me back when you—”

Frustrated that his voice was cutting in and out, Libby glanced at the bars on her phone. Maybe the problem was on her end. A sharp knock at the door startled her, and the phone clattered to the floor, its battery falling out. “Just a minute!” she called, scrambling to put it back together.

“Hurry up, Libs. We don’t have all day.”

It was Bruce—make that Mark. He sounded edgy.

“I’m coming,” she called, her voice strained. She felt as if she were standing on shifting sands. Everything she’d assumed to be true about him had proven a total fabrication.

With trembling fingers, she put her phone back together and dropped it in her purse. Exiting the bathroom, she stumbled headlong into Bruce—or, rather, Mark Earnest—a man who’d supposedly worked alongside her brother yet had never admitted to it.

“Something wrong?” he asked. With a lock of hair falling over one eye, he seemed so impossibly young and handsome. He was all veneer and no substance, she realized, a strange man with an even stranger agenda. Thank God she had learned all this before he turned her life any more upside down than he already had.

“I don’t know,” she said, thinking of Todd’s advice. “I’m not feeling too well. I think we should go back.”

“After we’ve come this far?” he said incredulously. “Not likely.” And with the same determination he’d demonstrated in her office, he seized her elbow and marched her back outside to his jeep.

Libby cast an uncomfortable glance around them, but no one seemed to notice her reticence as Mark trundled her into his jeep and took off.

She figured she may as well get this road trip over with. The sooner they saw the lighthouse, the sooner he would take her home, the sooner she’d be done with him. ...
