Story of Grunge

Il grunge (chiamato anche Seattle sound) è il termine con cui si designa un genere di musica rock, prodotto principalmente nello Stato di Washington degli Stati Uniti d'America, in particolare nella città di Seattle, a partire dalla seconda metà degli anni ottanta. La scena di Seattle proprio in quegli anni si rivelava, infatti, una delle più fertili del panorama mondiale, producendo gruppi che mescolavano influenze eterogenee, principalmente l'heavy metal e il punk rock, ma anche l'hardcore punk, l'hard rock e il post-hardcore.
E’ complicato definire il grunge, proprio per la mancanza di un'unità stilistica fra i diversi gruppi che ne hanno fatto e ne fanno parte. Tuttavia qualche elemento comune effettivamente esiste, soprattutto per la quasi completa rinuncia a sintetizzatori e tastiere, così come a qualunque tipo di effettistica "alla moda" sulle chitarre, il ritorno a strumentazioni semplici e d'impatto(basso-chitarra-batteria), la riscoperta delle sonorità degli anni sessanta e degli anni settanta, con un completo rifiuto del suono del rock da stadio degli anni ottanta e una sorta di predilezione per i suoni distorti.
Altro elemento catalizzante fra i gruppi grunge si può trovare nelle finalità di denuncia e l'utilizzo dello strumento musicale come protesta contro l'establishment politico e culturale del momento.
I gruppi,comunque, formavano una comunità unita di giovani che frequentavano gli stessi locali e si contraddistinguevano per determinate caratteristiche estetiche: i capelli lunghi, i jeans strappati, scarpe da ginnastica Converse spesso vecchie e rovinate, t-shirt sdrucite, maglioni pesanti, spesso monocolore e camicie di flanella a quadri (tipiche dei taglialegna di quei posti, i cosiddetti "lumberjack").
L’industria del pronto moda, iniziò quindi ad attivarsi e ad occuparsi febbrilmente di questo fenomeno per poter vendere ai suoi prezzi lo stile povero chiamato Grunge. Nacquero così intere collezioni di jeans, felpe, scarpe, camicie, giubbotti, opportunamente invecchiati con tecniche sempre più raffinate di usura nei lavaggi e nelle lavorazioni ed i negozi si riempirono di nuovissimi capi apparentemente vecchi.
Sicuramente questo successo mondiale dello stile “povero” non è quello che immaginavano i loro precursori, che di questo stile anticonformista avevano fatto una vera e propria ragione di vita.
Ad ogni modo la popolarità del grunge fu relativamente breve e venne bruscamente interrotta dall'ascesa di band più radio-friendly che decretarono la fine di tutte quelle caratteristiche anche culturali che diedero vita al grunge.
Già a metà degli anni 90, in concomitanza col crescente successo mondiale di questo fenomeno, iniziarono a girare per Seattle malinconiche magliette che riportavano una scritta: “Grunge is dead”(il grunge è morto) ad informare che quell’enorme successo ne dichiarava in realtà il declino nella sua essenza più pura: cioè la sua filosofia.

The Seattle scene in those years turned out to be, in fact, one of the most fertile in the world scene, producing groups that mixed heterogeneous musical influences, mainly heavy metal and punk rock, but even the hardcore punk, hard rock and post-hardcore .It's difficult to define grunge because of the lack of stylistic unity between the different bands that have made and were part of it . However, some common element actually exists, especially for the almost complete waiver of synthesizers and keyboards, as well as to any kind of special "fashionable" effects on guitars , the return to simple instruments and impact (bass - guitar - drums), the rediscovery of the sounds of sixties and seventies , with a complete rejection of the sound of the glam rock of the eighties and a sort of predilection for distorted sounds .Another common element between grunge groups can be found in the use of music as a intrument for protest against the political and culture establishment of the moment.The bands, however , formed a united community of young people who went to the same places and were characterized by certain visual characteristics: long hair, ripped jeans, Converse sneakers often old and damaged, torn t -shirts, heavy sweaters often in solid color and plaid flannel shirts (typical of loggers of those places, so-called " lumberjacks") .Then industry of fast fashion began feverishly to take care of this phenomenon in order to sell its pieces in that poor style called Grunge . This led to entire collections of jeans, sweatshirts, shoes, shirts , jackets, aged with increasingly refined techniques in washings and workmanship and the shops became soon filled with brand new clothes apparently old .Surely this worldwide success of that " poor " style is not what imagined their precursors, which in this unconventional style had a real reason to live.However the popularity of grunge was relatively short and was abruptly interrupted by the rise of more radio-friendly bands that meant the end of all those cultural characteristics that also gave birth to grunge .Already in the mid- 90s, in conjunction with the growing success of this global phenomenon, began to stroll to Seattle melancholy shirts that reported an inscription: "Grunge Is Dead" to inform that it's enormous success declared actually its decline in its purest essence: that is its philosophy .
