The sci-fi of the 80's owes quite a lot to Ralph McQuarrie. His touch, today, is (maybe) missing. The fan of sci-fi probably already know this man, but if you don't know him... well, now I'll tell you why.
McQuarrie was a Concept Artist, and he worked on the creation of the Viper of Battlestar Galactica TV series of the 80's. This TV show was intended to follow the incredible success of Star Wars, so the producer had invested a lot of money on it, giving to McQuarrie the job to create the concept of all the starship in the serie. And it's really interesting to look at the original sketches he did.
On this side you can see a first draw of "what it have to be" the Viper. It's really different, and... well, do you notice a similarity with the Buck Rogers starfighter? Not Casually the Buck Rogers TV series followed Battlestar Galactica of a year or two.
