Christmas is coming. You have to prepare the  gifts and the Christmas lunch but take your time to enjoy the atmosphere. A magical place where the Christmas lasts all the year is Via San Gregorio in Naples.

You will be fascinated by the presence of the numerous little old shops that seem to bring us back to the past in this narrow street in the downtown of Naples. Although you can see it in the middle of August with the sun beating down. Christmas here never ends. Each shop sells the figurines of the Christmas crib. The crib is a practice that comes from the Middle Ages and it tends to be an Italian tradition. In fact we do both  the crib and the Christmas tree. The Christmas crib is full of symbols that are not always taken from the classics Gospels. When we make the crib, the figurines that can not be missed are the cave, the baby Jesus, Joseph and Mary . The Neapolitan families begin to set up the crib in their home the 8 December and every year they will be extended it a little. Do not miss the new heroes on the stands: the classic Neapolitan soccer players but also the political celebrities and the international personalities. All in figurines form!

So we have both the classical art works and some products more kich that when I saw them, I was obviously smile. The art of carving these figurines is related with the craft sector. The crib was a source of great care in the XVIII century in the city of Naples, when the products of the utmost quality craftsmanship were created and entered into the definition of the Baroque artistic nature. The Christmas crib was a description of the manners, the customs, the glory of Naples, the capital of the art and the culture: now you can admire one of the cribs in the historical museum of the Certosa di San Martino.
Going to Via San Gregorio - at this time of the year - makes the visit even more magical.
The suggestion? If you want a piece of the unique craftsmanship buy a figurine of a shepherd and if you want to break away from the classic images peek through the shops and you will find some figurines  that are really fun!

Natale è alle porte. Bisogna preparare i regali e il pranzo ma avere anche il tempo per godersi l’atmosfera. Un luogo magico dove il natale dura tutto l’anno è Via San Gregorio a Napoli. In questa stretta via del centro di Napoli sono rimasta affascinata dalla presenza delle numerose botteghe che sembrano riportarci a tempi passati. Nonostante possiate visitarla in pieno agosto con il sole che batte, qui il Natale non finisce mai.

Ogni bottega vende delle statuine del presepio. Il presepio è un’usanza che deriva dal Medioevo e tende ad essere una tradizione Italiana. Infatti noi facciamo sia il presepe che l’albero di natale. Il presepio è ricco di simbologie che non sempre vengono presi dai vangeli classici. Quando facciamo il presepe, gli elementi che non possono mancare sono la grotta, Gesù bambino, San Giuseppe e Maria, però da alcuni studi pare che la grotta fosse un elemento non citato nei vangeli classici se non vagamente nella parte scritta da Luca. Nella varie regioni d’Italia il presepe ha assunto dei connotati tradizionali differenti. Il presepe nella cultura napoletana è un elemento imprescindibile dal natale. Il nome napoletano per definire il presepio è Presebbio. L e famiglie napoletane iniziano l’8 di dicembre ad allestire il loro presepe in casa ed ogni anno verrà ampliato un pochino. Per questo se si vuole avere un presepe di qualità bisogna rivolgersi a degli artigiani capaci come quelli di Via San Gregorio. C’è un vero e proprio rito nella preparazione del presepe ma tutto deve essere obbligatoriamente pronto la sera del 24. Così sarà divertente vedere l’impegno e  l’agitazione delle famiglie intorno alla realizzazione del proprio presepe, motivo di vanto con gli ospiti. Non avendo al possibilità di trascorrere un natale con una simpatica famiglia napoletana, ci limitiamo a  visitare Via San Gregrorio Al dì là del significato del presepio, le statuine prodotte dagli artigiani di questa particolare via  sono delle vere e proprie piccole opere.  d’arte. Uno dei soggetti maggiormente riprodotti oltre alle figure base è sicuramente il pastore realizzato con tantissime varianti. Non mancano sulle bancarelle i nuovi eroi: i classici giocatori napoletani ma anche politici personaggi dello spettacolo e personaggi internazionali. Passiamo quindi dall’opera d’arte al prodotto kich che , quando l’ho visto, mi ha ovviamente strappato un sorriso. L’arte di questi intagliatori di statuine rientra nel settore dell’artigianato. Il presepio nella città di Napoli fu motivo di grande cura anche negli anni del ‘700, quando dei prodotti di estrema qualità artigianale furono creati e rientrarono nella definizione artistica  dell’arte barocca naturalistica. Il presepe era un descrizione dei costumi , delle usanze, dello splendore di una Napoli che fu capitale dell’arte e della cultura: oggi potete ammirare uno dei presepi storici nel Museo della Certosa di San Martino. Andare in Via San gregorio in questo momento dell’anno rende la visita ancora più magica.  Il suggerimento? Se volete un pezzo di artigianato unico compratevi un pastore e se invece volete staccarvi dalle immagini classiche sbirciate tra le botteghe e troverete dei personaggi riprodotti che sono veramente divertenti!
