The feast of Santa Lucia in Verona; December 13

There is one important holiday in many Italian locations this week before Christmas: the feast of Saint Lucia.
Verona is a city in which this feastis lived intensely.
Every year Verona hosts a street market in Piazza Bra (this year from December 10 to 13), where the gifts are bought for the children -  Saint Lucia brings them the gifts both the toys or the sweets. The important thing is that the children take their eyes tightly closed during the night.
This feast of Saint Lucia seems to have roots in the pagan culture, because once the 13 December coincided with the winter solstice. It was the longest night of the year (and therefore the shortest day). In fact today the solstice falls on 23 December, but once the calendar was a bit different and then the solstice was celebrated before. In conjunction with Santa Lucia’s feast, a disease -affecting especially the eyes- spread  in Verona in the thirteenth century: in order to defeat the pestilence , the people address their hopes to the Saint  in an age where the science and the medicine had yet to develop much. The adults told their children- to convince them  to participate in the pilgrimage - that  Saint Lucia would bring some gifts during the night:  the tradition is to leave an empty dish that could be filled up with some sweets from the Saint Lucia.
Of course, the era of the consumerism has added gifts that were not only the food. As the tradition was transformed into a most joyful occasion, the stands arrive in  Piazza Bra. If you want to take part in the celebrations we will find in Verona It  is an excellent opportunity also to visit the eternal city of Romeo and Juliet.
Questa settimana prenatalizia cade una festa importante per molte località Italiane: la festa di Santa Lucia. Verona è una delle città in cui questa festa è vissuta intensamente.
Ogni anno viene organizzato un mercatino in Piazza Brà ( quest’anno dal 10 al 13 dicembre) dove vengono comprati i regali per i bambini perché Santa Lucia porta loro dei doni: possono essere dolcetti o giocattoli. L’importante è che i bimbi tengano ben chiusi gli occhi durante la notte.
Questa festa di Santa Lucia sembra avere radici addirittura nella  cultura pagana perché un tempo coincideva con il solstizio invernale ed era la notte più lunga dell’anno ( e di conseguenza il giorno più corto). In realtà il solstizio oggi cade il 23, ma un tempo il calendario era sfasato rispetto al nostro attuale e quindi si festeggiava prima. In concomitanza con al festa di Santa Lucia,  a Verona si diffuse nel XIII secolo una malattia che colpiva soprattutto gli occhi : per scongiurare questo pericolo, in un’epoca dove scienza e medicina dovevano ancora svilupparsi , si rivolsero alla Santa per scongiurare l’epidemia. Per convincere i bambini a   partecipare al pellegrinaggio si raccontava loro che la notte Santa Lucia a avrebbe portato dei doni: la tradizione è di lasciare un piatto vuoto che verrà riempito con dolci dalla Santa. Ovviamente l’epoca consumistica ha aggiunto doni che non fossero solo cibo. Man mano la tradizione si trasformò in una festa più gioiosa e le bancarelle incominciarono a  popolare piazza Bra. Se volete quindi prendere parte ai festeggiamenti ci troviamo tutti a Verona e per chi volesse è un’ottima occasione per visitare la città eterna di Romeo e Giulietta.
