The For Carnation - Promised Works (1997)

(ITA) Quest’album raccoglie i primi due EP del gruppo erede degli Slint: nella formazione iniziale, oltre a McMahan, figurano anche Pajo e i Tortoise. Le prime tre canzoni provengono dal mediocre Fight songs, lavoro più che altro sperimentale che rende chiara l’idea di fondo, cioè quella di lente trame di chitarra accompagnate dal narcolettico parlato del cantante. Molto più interessante è il secondo EP, Marshmallows, dove si alternano delicate filastrocche (On the swing, Imyr, Marswmallow) e trascinanti sgroppate post-rock. I wear the gold, caratterizzata da effetti di chitarra che disturbano in sottofondo una linea di basso ossessiva, getta le basi per il successivo omonimo LP del gruppo.
