The Italian Canyon in the South Italy : the Gravine Tarantine, Puglia

Every time I discover a new place in the world and in my country, I realize how many things there are to be discovered and how little time we have. Far from the places of the mass tourism, you can find  the Gravine Tarantine in the beautiful region of Puglia, just far from the sea. It is amazing to observe how the earth is able to ripple,  creating some unique places.

Castellaneta

The  Gravine Tarantine are the canyon of  the Puglia. These lands were inhabited until the X century in the dark caves this is why you should visit this land both in depth and on the surface. Those caves were the homes and then the shelters during the war, so their importance for the local people was essential.
Where you can go to admire this canyon? Castellaneta is a splendid place. The gorge here is the deepest point in all the Puglia . The villages is a beautiful place to visit. The little old town is divided into two parts called Sacco district and Murricello district. You have  to  visit the church of the Assumption of the XVI century, rich in frescoes. This village is located in the most spectacular part of the canyon.  

Rodolfo Valentino

Rodolfo Valentino was  born here in 1895. For me and the people of my generation - unless you are passionate about vintage movie- the name of this actor is not so well known but if try to ask to my grandmother if she knows Rudolph Valentino , she will respond with loving eyes that it was a beautiful and talented actor. The silent films defined  him the Latin lover of the star system and it seems that he enchanted the female audience with his magnetic eyes  .
The church of San Michele is a little gem of the Baroque art but the cathedral is the church of St. Nicholas. This original structure dates back to the thirteenth century but was rebuilt in the seventeenth century. Surely you can find in this small village the warmth of the inhabitants of southern Italy.
My suggestion is still to visit some cave arts, they are extremely beautiful and they can better clarify the history of these lands. Do not expect to find in front of you the caves of prehistoric men! These caves and the architectonical structures were partially enriched with elements of Byzantine art since the heyday of this civilization dates back to the ninth century. An example? The crypt of the Padre eterno, in the Gravina di Coriglione has on the walls some Byzantine frescoes reflecting the fact that we are not talking about a primitive civilization but of a population that had chosen a location consciously. Here they felt to belong to the territory and they built an important cultural aspect to consider. Now you have to wear some comfortable shoes because there is a lot to see here

Ogni volta  che scopro un nuovo posto nel mondo e nel mio paese, mi rendo conto  di quante cose ci siano da scoprire e di quanto poco tempo abbiamo. Fuori dai circuiti turistici, nella magnifica regione Puglia, appena distante dal mare, appaiono le Gravine Tarantine. Rimango sempre affascinata da come la terra riesca ad incresparsi creando dei luoghi assolutamente unici. Le Gravine Tarantine sono il canyon pugliese. Queste terre furono abitate fino agli anni Mille in antri oscuri, per questo andrebbero visitate sia dentro i ritrovamenti rupestri come alla luce del sole. Quelle cavità furono abitazioni e divennero rifugi durante la guerra immaginate quindi la loro importanza per le persone del posto è stata fondamentale. Dove andare ad ammirare questo canyon? Castellaneta è un punto splendido da dove ammirare. La gola è qui il punto più profondo della Puglia. Il paesini è assolutamente da visitare. Il piccolo centro storico è diviso in due parti chiamate quartiere Sacco e quartiere Murricello. Nel paese bisogna assolutamente visitare la chiesa dell’Assunta  del XVI secolo ricca di affreschi dell’epoca.  Questo paesino posizionato nella parte più spettacolare del canyon pugliese  fu il logo natale di Rodolfo Valentino, nato qui nel 1895 Alle persone della mia generazione, a meno che non siano appassionate di cinema d’epoca, il nome non desterà grande scalpore ma se solo domandaste a mia nonna se conosceva Rodolfo Valentino vi risponderà con occhi innamorati che era un bellissimo e  bravissimo attore del tempo. Certo il cinema muto di allora lo soprannominò il latin lover dello star system e pare che con il suo sguardo magnetico incantasse il pubblico femminile. LA chiesa di San Michele è un piccolo gioiello dell’arte barocca  ma la cattedrale è la chiesa di San Nicola  la cui struttura originaria risale al XIII secolo ma che fu rifatta  nel XVII secolo. Sicuramente potrete trovare in questo piccolo borgo tutto il calore degli abitanti del sud Italia. Il mio suggerimento è comunque di visitare anche qualche resto di ritrovamento rupestre, sono estremamente suggestivi e chiariscono meglio il passato di queste terre. Non pensate di trovarvi davanti a grotte informi tipo quelle degli uomini primitivi! Queste abitazioni e strutture furono in parte arricchite con elementi dell’arte bizantina in quanto il massimo splendore di questa civiltà risale al IX secolo. Un esempio? La cripta di Padre eterno,  nella Gravina di Coriglione ha sulle pareti degli affreschi bizantini a dimostrazione del fatto che non si sta parlando di una civiltà primitiva ma di una popolazione che aveva scelto delle locazioni che sentiva sue e che gli dava senso di sicurezza ed appartenenza al territorio, costruendo quindi un importante aspetto culturale da tenere in considerazione. Ancora una vota armatevi di scarpe comode perché c’è molto da visitare.
