Ultimamente sono talmente piena di impegni che ho abbandonato la segnalazione di titoli in lingua: ne escono davvero troppi per il poco tempo che ho a disposizione e siccome mi piace fare le cose per bene spesso “passo” oltre cercando di non guardare le fantastiche cover che mi scorrono davanti.
Come dite? Non si giudica un libro dalla cover? Avete ragione, ma potete resistere al fascino di queste tonalità di blu, alle stelline, alla luna, a quelle finestrelle illuminate? Francamente, io no, così ho colto l’occasione del Blog Tour dedicato a The Starriest Summer di Adelle Yeung per riprendere in mano la lettura in lingua e contemporaneamente segnalarvi un bel libro.

Milioni di persone ogni giorno giocano su PC, on-line, su Play Station o Wii e immagino quanti di loro (di noi) vorrebbe davvero entrare all’interno della storia rappresentata e viverla da dentro. Lo ha pensato anche Michelle che, come si legge dalla trama “salva il mondo quotidianamente” grazie ad un gioco che ama ma quando il fratello inventa un sistema per entrarci davvero la prima ad esserne entusiasta è proprio lei.
Michelle entra quindi in questo gioco, ignara che non sia solo una realtà virtuale bensì un vero e proprio mondo parallelo dove lei è una Dea con poteri – a lei – sconosciuti e il suo avvento abbia scatenato il Ciclo delle Sei Lune (The Cycle of the Six Moons): una serie di prove che la Terra (dagli abitanti di Starrs chiamata Tyme) dovrà superare perché il mondo come noi conosciamo non venga distrutto.
In tutto ciò fa la comparsa anche di un affascinante principe di cui Michelle cercherà di non affezionarsi troppo.
Primo libro di una trilogia, ho trovato la storia originale, in fondo i videogiochi potrebbero essere una sorta di “porta” dimensionale e tutto ciò che avviene al loro interno essere più di reale di quanto pensiamo. Non solo quindi una realtà virtuale – alla Matrix o Tron, per citare due film – ma un luogo esistente, con caratteristiche molto diverse dalle nostre dove la magia, come in questo caso, rischia di essere distrutta dalla tecnologia.
I personaggi sono ben tratteggiati anche se si ha l’impressione di trovarci di fronte a ragazzini più giovani dei 15 anni dichiarati. Personaggi, però, che nello svolgimento del libro avranno un loro percorso di crescita e di consapevolezza di ciò che gli succede intorno, cambiando quindi radicalmente sistema di vita.
Una storia avvincente e curiosa, rivolta soprattutto ad un pubblico giovane e che ama le storie intrise di magia ma anche calate nella realtà tecnologica di oggi.

“It’s this young lady I wanted to have a word with,” she continues.
“M-me?”
“Yes, young Goddess, you!”
I hear Gediyon gasp, “So you are…!”
“Why have you returned?” the woman shrieks, inching closer to my face. Her breath smells like curry. “Starrs is not ready for your soul. You should have stayed in Tyme!”
“What are you talking about?” I start.
“She came from Tyme?” Gediyon asks.
She twirls around and I can breathe. She says, “Yes, boy, and she should have stayed there.”
“What about time?” I say. “I’m just playing a game!”
“No! No you are not! Starrs is as real as your ‘Earth,’ and the Cycle is not a toy at your mercy. Your brother shouldn’t have created that machine of his. He knew he’d be playing with the universe!”
I gape at her. “I… I don’t understand.”
“Of course you don’t!” she spits. “The Creator should only enter Starrs when she is born here. She’s raised and taught the ways of the Cycle. It’s a lifestyle. A fifteen-year-old can’t hope to learn how to be Goddess in six months. All because you and your brother wanted to play a game, you’ve awakened the dormant Cycle of the Six Moons, and all the universes are doomed.”
She twists herself like thread on a spindle, then vanishes into nothing.
