tovagliette bilingue - bilingual placemats

non so perché mi piacciono tanto le tovagliette. ma mi piacciono e già due volte le ho fatte per regali di matrimonio. il mese scorso si è sposata una mia cara amica statunitense con il suo compagno guatemalteco. non sanno ancora bene dove vivranno, quindi volevo fargli un regalo facilmente trasportabile in valigia.
i'm not really sure why i love placemats so much. but i do and i'd already made them as wedding gifts for two different friends. last month a good friend of mine from the states married her guatemalan partner. they still aren't really sure where they'll be living, so i wanted to make them something that could be easily stuffed in a suitcase.

perciò, una'altra volta le tovagliette. ma mica tovagliette qualunque! avevo già visto tempo fa delle tovagliette con le forme dei pezzi da apparecchiare, che mi sembrava un'idea carina (che potete vedere dai commenti su quel post). non mi ricordo mai io dove si dovrebbe posare gli elemeni della tavola, figurati un bimbo. ho anche aggiunto lo scritto dei pezzi in inglese...
so, once again, placemats. but not just any placemats! a while back i'd seen placemats with the shapes of the dinnerware, which seemed like a cute idea (as you can see by reading the comments on that post). go figure, i can never remember where the different table elements should go, never mind a kid. i also added the words of each piece in english...

...e anche nello spagnolo. dopotutto, si tratta di una nuova famiglia bilingue e biculturale. ma confesso: l'idea non è stata per niente mia. ho visto l'idea della tovaglietta bilingue da sew like my mom (blog fantastico, aggiungo) e si vede il mio entusiasmo sempre dal commento lasciato. ho fatto tutto come melissa, perfino copiando i puntini prima e dopo ogni parola scritta. le uniche differenze erano che ho usato colori diversi per i pezzi e che non ho usato lo sbieco, ma li ho cuciti normalmente. oh, e lei ha usato un pezzo di flanella dietro ciascun lato ma io ho usato un cotone pesante, quindi ho solo messo uno strato di ovatta per i quilts tra i due lati. oh... un'altra cosa: ne ho fatte sei invece di quattro, quindi ancora più fatica!
...and also in spanish. after all, this is a new bilingual and bicultural family. but i admit, the idea wasn't at all mine. i saw the idea of bilingual placemats at sew like my mom (great blog, i'll add) and you can witness my enthusiasm by the comment i left. i pretty much copied melissa, even the little dots before and after each word written. the only differences were that i used different colors for the pieces and i didn't use bias tape, but just turned and topstitched. oh, and she used a piece of flannel behind each side but i used a heavyweight cotton, so i just put one layer of quilt batting in the middle. oh... and one other thing: i made six instead of four, so even more work!
 
ho fatto le forme a mano libera e sono stata attenta di fare il coltello all'incontrario (grazie all'autrice originale, che ha fatto l'errore di disegnare i coltelli nella direzione corretta sul retro della carta adesiva, dunque rimanendo girati nel senso sbagliato sulla tovaglietta). se volete le mie sagome, si possono scaricare qui. (mi sono appena resa conto di aver scritto "cup" invece di "glass" sul foglio scaricabile. decidete voi che cosa scrivere. di solito "cup" è per un bicchiere di plastica o di metallo e "glass" è di vetro. ecco la vostra lezione di inglese per oggi!) consiglio sempre di incollare le foglie sui cartoni dei cereali (il mio supporto preferito!) e di tagliare le forme appena dentro le linee nere. il tutorial si trova nel post originale di sew like my mom. praticamente si disegnano le forme su heat-n-bond lite (o altro prodotto per le applicazioni), facendo 2 di ciascuno per ogni tovagliette che vuoi fare. si fissa con il ferro sul retro della stoffa e si tagliano le forme. si toglie la carta dal retro e di nuovo con il ferro, si attaccano sulla stoffa da sfondo. per evitare che si stacchino durante i lavaggi, si deve cucire con uno zig zag fitto lungo tutti i bordi. sarò franca: questa parte è una bella rottura del sedere. soprattutto quelle forchette!! ma si deve fare.
i handdrew the shapes and was careful to draw the knife backwards (thanks to the original author, who made the mistake of drawing the knife the right way on the adhesive, so in the end it faced the wrong way on the placemat). if you want to use my shapes, you can download them here. (i just realized that i wrote "cup" instead of "glass" on the downloadable sheet. make your own decision of which you prefer!) i always suggest glueing the sheets of paper on cereal boxes (my favorite support!) and then cutting them out right inside the black lines. you can find the tutorial on the original post at sew like my mom. basically you draw the shapes on heat-n-bond lite (or any other product for applique), making two of each shape per placemat. you iron it onto the back of the fabric and cut out the shapes. peel off the paper and iron onto the background fabric. to keep it from coming off in the wash, do a tight zig zag around all the edges. i'll be honest: this part is a real pain in the butt. especially those forks!! but it's gotta be done.

if you leave the unfinished pieces on the kitchen table, you just might find that some little helper has decided to set the table!

quando avrai finito con tutte le applicazioni, si cuciono i due lati insieme nel modo che preferisci. questa foto mi fa pensare che qualche anima sola ha apparecchiato per i suoi amici immaginari.e che si scoccia di stirare i tovaglioli lavabili.
once you're done with the appliques, you sew the two sides together however you wish. this picture makes me think that some lonely soul has set the table for his immaginary friends. and that he doesn't like ironing cloth napkins.
usando un pennarello per le stoffe, scrivi i nomi dei pezzi. probabilmente si dovrà stirare la stoffa di nuovo per fissare l'inchiostro, ma è meglio controllare le istruzioni della marca del pennarello usato.
using a fabric marker, write on the names of the pieces. you'll probably have to iron the fabric once again to fix the ink, but it's best to check the instructions of the marker you have.
