Un pesce a caccia di pensieri - A fish chasing thoughts

4 marzo 1943.
Lucio se n’è andato pochi giorni prima del suo cinquantanovesimo compleanno.

Ho in testa tante, troppe frasi celebri prese in prestito dalle sue canzoni.
Ma io, lo sapete bene, rifuggo retoriche e luoghi comuni.

Così sono tornato al 1978, quando i miei genitori mi portarono ad un concerto di Francesco De Gregori, nel quale, a sorpresa, arrivò anche Lucio Dalla.

“Mi è venuto a trovare un amico da Bologna - disse dopo un paio di canzoni il Poeta - e se non vi dispiace…..”

Ed a noi non dispiacque affatto, perché fu un concerto memorabile.
Il mio amore per i cantautori italiani, per le parole e le costruzioni immaginifiche che la nostra lingua concede, nacque in quella calda serata romana.

Quella sera io scoprii un tesoro. Un luogo tutto mio dove perdermi e ritrovarmi.
Dove vagare senza meta come un pesce a caccia di pensieri.

“E’ chiaro
che il pensiero dà fastidio
anche se chi pensa
è muto come un pesce
anzi un pesce
e come pesce è difficile da bloccare
perché lo protegge il mare
com’è profondo il mare”.

Ed il mare è davvero profondo quando vuole esserlo.

Lucio Dalla is gone, few days before his fifty-ninth birthday.

In my head too many famous phrases borrowed from his songs.
But, as you know, I don’t like rhetoric and platitudes.

So I went back to 1978, when my parents took me to a Francesco De Gregori concert, in which, surprisingly, there was also Lucio Dalla.

“A friend of mine came to visit me from Bologna - De Gregori said after a couple of songs - and if you do not mind…..”

And we didn’t mind at all, because it was a memorable concert.
My love for Italian music, for the words and imaginative constructions that my language allows, was born in that warm Roman night.

That night I discovered a treasure. A place all mine where I can lose and find myself.
Where I can wander aimlessly like a fish chasing thoughts.

“It ’s clear
that thoughts bother
even if those who think
are dumb as a fish
indeed a fish
and as fish is difficult to stop
because he’s protected by the sea
how deep is the sea”.

And the sea is very deep when it wants to be.
