If you like medieval villages as much as I do and you are near Rimini, don’t miss the occasion to visit Verucchio. You will walk among ancient noble palaces overlooking on narrow streets, admire gentle slopes offering unexpected panoramas and evoke the passionate love usually associated with Paolo and Francesca (he belonged to the Malatesta family!), a love become immortal thanks to Dante’s “Divine Comedy”. And when the latch through the village and the fresh air over the hill will have made you be hungry, the best regional products will be waiting for you at the Restaurant La Rocca, for instance. Situated in a strategic position near the fortress which it is named after, this restaurant welcomes visitors with the typical Romagna-style cordiality; it offers quality food and wine, that you can taste while enjoying an astonishing viewpoint on the coastline. A unique scenery during the day, simply enchanting at night. Don’t miss tagliatelle al ragù, a typical home-made pasta with meat saucesboiled forat least three hours. Together with cold cuts, try some “mora Romagnola” (meat of typical local swine).
Wishing to bring some gourmet gifts back home with you? Just remember to stop at Malatesta Square before leaving: you could buy typical specialities such as local oil, spicy mustard, the “savor” and caramelized figs at “Il bello e il buono” shop. Or you can enter the butcher’s shop “E Mazèl” and take some good pieces of local fresh meat, that you can also taste within the historic medieval caves.
If you arent’ having dinner in Verucchio, you could just drive to Villa Verucchio and take a break at one of the three restaurants of “Tenuta Amalia”. The “Cantina della Gea” is my favourite: here a typical “azdòra” (a lady who used to care care of the home) will offer you her own specialties, that you can accompany with the good wines produced on the estate.
The homely and friendly atmosphere will bring you back in time: not back to the Malatesta days (even though you might like to know that the estate had been actually used as a military stay by the Malatesta family), but to a somehow closer period when farming families gathered around the same table and shared simple things such as those offered by the land and cultivated by men.
Sliced meat, pork meat served in tasty slices, pig crackling, some cheese, croutons with bacon, some vegetables in vinaigrette and a delicious selection of home-made bread and breadsticks will feed you, while a glass of good Sangiovese will quench your thirst. And you’ll find no dishes here, as everything will be served on typical yellow paper napkins! Leave room for the Gea’s sweets at the end: home-made like everything else, they’ll perfectly conclude your meal and will make you leave with the desire to return.
