sì, lo so che non sto più andando bene in ordine con il conto alla rovescia, ma non ce la facevo a non condividere il nostro albero di natale del 2012.
yeah, i know that i'm not going quite in order with my countdown, but i just couldn't wait to show you our 2012 christmas tree.
sono cresciuta sempre con un abete gigante scelto da noi e tagliato al momento. sono bellissimi e profumatissimi così, ma lasciano un sacco di aghi in giro e poi mi fa una tristezza che si seccherà. quando sono arrivata in italia ho messo le luci su un ficus che avevo in casa. mi sembrava un'alternativa più italiana che l'abete. poi ci siamo trasferiti e il ficus era troppo grande da tenere in casa, quindi ho cominciato diversi anni di tenere un abete mignon in vaso sul balcone che portavo dentro per il periodo natalizio. solo che questi poveri alberi non ce la fanno con i cambiamenti di temperatura e 3 volte si sono seccati.
i grew up always having a huge christmas tree that we'd pick out and have cut on the spot. they're gorgeous and smell so good that way, but they leave loads of needles around and then they make me so sad when they dry out. when i moved to italy i started putting lights on a ficus tree that i had in my apartment. it seemed like a more italian alternative to the pine tree. then we moved and the ficus was too big to keep inside, so i began numerous years of keeping a dwarf pine tree in a pot on the balcony that i'd bring inside during the holiday season. except those poor trees just couldn't handle the temperature changes and three times they dried out.
questo anno ho deciso di non condannare un altro albero, nè comprarne uno di plastica. avevo visto qualcuno che metteva luci e addobi su un ramo grande e spoglio, quindi ho chiesto ad un amico che tiene parecchi ulivi se aveva per caso un ramo grande per me. doveva potare gli alberi in quei giorni, quindi me ne ha messo un paio a parte e ho scelto questo.
this year i decided not to doom another tree, nor buy one out of plastic. i'd seen some people put lights and ornaments on a big bare branch, so i asked a friend who had lots of olive trees if he happened to have a big branch for me. he had to prune the trees around that time, so he put a couple aside for me and i chose this one.
ma che bellezza avere un ramo pieno di foglie e rametti! sembra proprio un albero vero e proprio! poi dà una sensazione di leggerezza e luce invece della compattezza dell'abete.
ah, how lovely it is to have a branch full of leaves and smaller branches! it looks just like an actual live tree! then it gives a nice feeling of lightness as opposed to the compactness of a pine christmas tree.
abbiamo messo due fili di luci, uno rossi e l'altro bianchi, che lampeggiano. ecco l'albero con solo i rossi accessi, solo i bianchi...
we put on two strings of lights, one red and the other white, both of which blink. here's the tree with just the reds on, just the whites...
... ed entrambi allo stesso tempo! l'abbiamo anche addobati con le nostre decorazioni. in italia c'è la tendenza di usare solo palline colorate, ma negli stati uniti è molto tipico mettere di tutto sull'albero e i bimbi fanno spesso delle decorazioni a mano per l'albero. nella foto all'inizio del post vedrete alcune decorazioni, tra le quali un cuore di cristina e un drago che mia madre mi ha dipinto quand'ero piccola, molto dorato come avevo richiesto, e una stella di cristallo da mia zia per il primo natale che mio marito ed io abbiamo passato insieme da sposati. mi piace avere tanta varietà perché ogni pezzo ha una sua storia e mi ricorda delle persone amate.
... and both at the same time! we also put up our ornaments. in italy there's the tendency just to put up colored balls, but in the united states it's much more typical to put up all sorts of things on the tree and kids often make handmade tree ornaments. in the picture at the beginning of this post you can see some of ours, among which a heart cristina made and a dragon that my mother painted for me when i was little, very golden as i'd requested, and a crystal star my aunt gave my husband and me for our first christmas as a married couple. i love having such a variety because every ornament has its own story and reminds me of some loved one.
purtroppo la stella che ho fatto l'anno scorso da mettere in cima all'abete mignon non potevo più mettere in cima perché il ramo non ha una cima. quindi l'ho infilato dov'era possibile restare senza cadere. ho fatto la stella con quei vassoi delle pasticcerie. ho fatto un cono e l'ho spillato per tenere la forma. poi ho fatto una stella doppia-faccia e l'ho incollata al cono.
unfortunately the star i made last year for the top of our tiny tree will no longer be adorning a tree top because the olive branch doesn't have one. so i just stuck it where it could stay without falling. i made the star with those neapolitan pastry trays. i made a cone and stapled it shut. then i made a double-sided star and glued it on.
ok, come ho fatto a sistemare questo albero? ho tagliato una bottiglia di plastica di 2 litri e l'ho messa dentro un vaso di terracotta. poi ho messo dei sassi tutto intorno alla bottiglia. si potrebbe anche usare della terriccia e poi riutilizzarla per qualche pianta successivamente, o anche sabbia, ma avevo già questi sassi, quindi li ho usati.
ok, so how did i set up the tree? i cut a 2-liter plastic bottle and put it inside a terracotta pot. then i put rocks all around the bottle. you could also use potting soil and then reuse it for some other plant afterwards, or even sand, but i already had these rocks, so i used those.
ho infilato il ramo dentro la bottiglia, l'ho riempito di altri sassi, e poi ci ho messo l'acqua dentro. ci va un bel po', mi ha sorpreso quanto ci entrava.
i stuck the branch inside the bottle, filled it with more rocks and then put some water in. i was surprised at how much water could fit in there.
ovviamente non ho sprecato il resto della bottiglia. ci ho messo dentro una pallina tipo da ping pong...
i obviously didn't want to waste the rest of the bottle. i put a ping pong ball in it...
... e mentre sistemavo l'albero, i bimbi correvano in giro facendo quel gioco di cercare di acchiappare la pallina dentro la bottiglia. (forse avrei potuto togliere quell'etichetta. non sto mica facendo pubblicità all'acqua in plastica!)
... and while i was setting up the tree, the kids ran around playing that game where you try to catch the ball inside the bottle. (i probably should have taken off that label. i'm certainly not trying to sponsor any water in plastic bottles!)
forse vi chiedete come mai l'albero sta sul un tavolo. se fosse a terra, sarebbe capovolto, smontato e distrutto ben presto da un piccolo della nostra conoscenza. ;) l'albero non era molto stabile, però, quindi abbiamo finito per legarlo alla parete con tre cordine di spago in tre direzioni. quindi ora è molto stabile, ma ancora non al sicuro del piccolo "distruttore" che è appassionato dei sassi!
you might be wondering why the tree is on a table. if it were on the floor, it would be promptly dumped over, pulled apart and totally destroyed by a certain little boy we know. ;) the tree wasn't very stable, though, so we ended up tying it to the wall with three lengths of twine in three directions. now it's much more stable, but still not safe from the little "destroyer" who happens to be a great lover of rocks!
