Buona serata a tutti! Siamo arrivati alla seconda puntata della rubrica Avvistamenti d’oltreoceano. Come sapete, tutti i venerdì pubblicherò un nuovo post parlando di un libro straniero che mi ha colpito e che non è ancora stato pubblicato in Italia.
Il romanzo di cui mi occuperò questa settimana è Article 5 di Kristen Simmons. Spero che vi piaccia!
Trama: New York, Los Angeles e Washington D.C. sono stati abbandonati. Il Bill of Rights è stato revocato e sostituito con gli Statuti Morali. Non c’è più polizia – invece ci sono i soldati. Non ci sono più le multe per cattiva condotta – invece, ci sono arresti, processi e forse peggio. La gente che viene arrestata di solito non ritorna. La diciassettenne Ember Miller è abbastanza vecchia per ricordare che le cose non sono sempre state in questo modo. Vivendo con la madre ribelle single, è difficile per lei dimenticare che le persone non sono sempre state arrestate per la lettura di libri sbagliati o per il restare fuori dopo il tramonto. E’ difficile dimenticare che la vita negli Stati Uniti era diversa. Ember ha perfezionato l’arte del mantener un basso profilo. Lei sa come ottenere le cose di cui ha bisogno, come buoni pasto e abiti smessi, e come superare le casuali ispezioni a casa (compiute) dai militari. La sua vita è più vicina alla pace di come lo consentano circostanze. Cioè, fino a quando sua madre non viene arrestata per la non conformità con l’Articolo 5 degli Statuti Morali. E uno dei funzionari dell’arresto non è altro che Chase Jennings – l’unico ragazzo che Ember abbia mai amato.

It’s hard to forget that life in the United States used to be different. Ember has perfected the art of keeping a low profile. She knows how to get the things she needs, like food stamps and hand-me-down clothes, and how to pass the random home inspections by the military. Her life is as close to peaceful as circumstances allow. That is, until her mother is arrested for noncompliance with Article 5 of the Moral Statutes. And one of the arresting officers is none other than Chase Jennings—the only boy Ember has ever loved.
