Blog Tour: Interview with Ann M.Noser author of How to Date Dead Guys

Domani uscirà ufficialmente How To Date Dead Guys, il nuovo romanzo (in lingua inglese) dell’autrice americana Ann M.Noser. Protagonista è una teenager davvero particolare, si chiama Emma e sembra una ragazza come tante ma ha un segreto bello grosso: è in grado di vedere i fantasmi. Un segreto che ha tenuto sapientemente nascosto per anni ma che non può mantenere ancora a lungo, soprattutto quando dal fiume che fiancheggia il college iniziano ad emergere i fantasmi dei ragazzi che lì sono morti. Una trama intrigante per un romanzo paranormal YA con venature horro. Per parlarne ho intervistato l’autrice, che mi ha raccontato anche di essersi ispirata a fatti realmente accaduti, nello specifico agli Smiley Face Murders… 

Per scoprire tutto, ma proprio tutto su questo romanzo è stato organizzato un blog tour e Wonderful Monster fa parte della prima tappa grazie alla quale ho avuto la possibilità di intervistare l’autrice. Sotto trovate quindi le domande che le ho rivolto e le risposte. Ho preferito lasciarle in lingua, così da non avere filtri nella traduzione.

La studentessa del secondo anno Emma Roberts ricorda i saggi consigli della madre: “non dormire in giro, sii educata in pubblico e non dire a nessuno che vedi i fantasmi”. Ma quando l’affascinante Mike Carlson annega nel fiume sotto i suoi occhi, Emma sente che la sua vita sta per spezzarsi.

Sentendosi in colpa per la morte di Mike e ossessionata dagli incubi, Emma inizia ad avvicinarsi alla stregoneria e al misterioso Libro delle Ombre per riportarlo indietro. Al posto di resuscitare Mike, Emma deve assistere coloro che che ha strappato alla morte – un laureando in medicina che è saltato giù dal ponte, una vittima disperata determinata a scoprire chi l’ha uccisa e un ragazzo che faceva parte di una confraternita al quale non sa resistere… per primi. Più a suo agio con i morti che con i vivi, Emma approfondisce ulteriormente la conoscenza del Libro delle Ombre. La sua potenza cresce, ma la magia potrebbe non essere sufficiente a proteggerla dalla vendetta del fiume e dai killer che lo hanno alimentato con le loro vittime.

1. What about your writing? How first did you think writing would be your work?

A few years ago, I started writing veterinary articles in an effort to educate the local newspaper audience. What started out as one lecture on proper litter box care grew into a monthly column. Then I began to write about another love running. Meanwhile, I penned a fairy tale saga and HOW TO DATE DEAD GUYS. It wasn’t until I joined a writing critique group that things got serious.

2. What kind of genre do you prefer to read? And what to write?

READING: My preferred genre varies with the year and season. I’ll read a bunch of YA, then veer off into biographies, and then finish up with a thriller or two. Sometimes I want a page-turner, something I just can’t put down. Other times, such as when life gets busy, I need a more casual relationship with a book, so I can just set it down and pick it up at my convenience.
WRITING: So far, I’ve written urban fantasy, fairy tale, and YA dystopian. I’d love to explore other genres as well. Lately, I’ve been tossing around an interesting idea for a short horror story. About the only thing I won’t ever attempt is an erotic alien romance. (That’s a promise.)

3. I know that How To Date dead Guys is inspired from Smiley Face Murders: here in Italy we don’t know anything about it, can you briefly explain it to us?

The Smiley Face Murder Theory was proposed by two retired NYPD detectives, Kevin Gannon and Anthony Duarte, who found striking similarities between a string of cases of unexplained drowning deaths of white, college-aged males in towns in Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Gannon and Duarte used GPS, river flow patterns, and police dogs to figure out where the victims’ bodies entered the water. At these sites of entry, the detectives discovered trademark “Smiley Face” graffiti, leading to the name of their theory.

The detectives speculated that the victims were drugged, tortured, then disposed of into the water to remove evidence from the victim’s body, such as fingerprints and fibers. Autopsy reports from several cases didn’t find any water in the lungs, which helped support this theory.

4. How came to you the idea of this story and these characters?

I learned about the Smiley Face Killer theory during a late night drive listening to National Public Radio. The station aired a program suggesting that many of the “accidental drownings” of college-aged men in the Midwest were actually murders. I wondered if the theory was true. I also wondered why nobody was watching out for all these guys who got lost in the river. Didn’t anyone care enough about them to make sure they got home okay? And did anybody actually see them drown and just walk away? That’s when the main character Emma came into my mind, someone who would never just walk away, no matter how bad things got.

5. Emma is the main character. If you have to introduce her to our readers, what would you tell about her?

There’s so much more to Emma than most people realize. She’s funny, but hardly anyone knows this because she doesn’t talk much…at first. Emma’s book smart but refuses to discuss her grades. She’s fiercely loyal, even when her friends don’t deserve it. Once she claims the Book of Shadows as her own, Emma will discover she’s a talented witch. But this power comes with a price.

6. Thank you for this interview, it will be published in Italy where I hope will soon be translated (although we will read it also in English): What do you think about our country? Have you ever been here or will you come?

I’ve been to your country many times when watching the movies Room with a View (my favorite) and The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly (my husband’s favorite). But, seriously, I’d love to visit both Italy and Sicily. The scenery is gorgeous, the food is amazing, and it would be such an adventure. But I would miss my dogs. (My husband would roll his eyes at my last comment. Haha.)

“La mia lista di cose da fare cerca di farmi capire che sto provando a inserire tutto quello che si fa in 48 ora in un giorno da 24. Ho scelto una vita piena di animali. Mi alleno per la maratona con il mio cane, poi vado al lavoro in un piccolo studio di veterinaria e termino il giorno inciampando sui miei cuccioli mentre tento di convincere i miei due indisciplinati figli che SI’, è DAVVERO ora di andare a dormire. Ma non riesco ad aspettare che la casa sia silenziosa per iniziare a scrivere; devo rubare del tempo durante tutta la giornata. Dieci minuti qui, mezz’ora là, vivo immersa della mia immaginazione.

Come tutte le indaffarate mamme americane, sono multi-task. Scavo buche mentre corro. Al posto di meditare, digito follemente durante gli esercizi di yoga. Trovo ispirazione in molte cose: un bellissimo sorriso, una canzone strappacuore, o un articolo di giornale riguardante teorie politiche. Per esempio, un lungo viaggio in macchina al buio ascoltando un programma su NPR a proposito della teoria su Smiley Face Murders, mi ha fatto porre così tante domande che ho scritto How to date dead guys dando io stessa le risposte per la mia soddisfazione.

Vorrei avere maggior tempo per scrivere (e correre, leggere, e dormire), ma finché non trovo la gira-tempo di Hermione Granger, mi destreggerò nella vita con le mie mezze storie nella testa. I personaggi principali e le trame interagiscono nel mio cranio e ho bisogno di scrivere di loro per capire che cosa succederà dopo.”
