“…” silenzio.
“No dico, l’India. Sta facendo passi da gigante vero? Dicono che è una potenza emergente, come si vive in India?”
Aspetto. Adesso me lo chiede - penso.
“Ma lo Sri Lanka…” – eccola là – “fa parte dell’India?”
Gosh. Lo sapevo, me lo sento chiedere quasi sempre… e si che la geografia a scuola non si studia più solo da qualche anno! Ma possibile che ancora tanta gente non sappia che lo Sri Lanka è un paese a sè, indipendente, autonomo e non che non c’entra niente con l’India?
Certo, ci saranno anche delle affinità, come tra noi e nostri cugini d’oltralpe, ma sono due paesi diversi per molti aspetti. Chiaramente per la vicinanza -appunto- geografica ci sarà anche stato uno scambio di elementi culturali. Ma questi elementi sono andati via via modificandosi nel loro processo di adattamento…
Un libro molto interessante che parla proprio di questo argomento è Aspects of Sinhalese Culture di Martin Wickramasinghe, uno degli autori più importanti dello Sri Lanka. Il tema centrale nelle sue opere è proprio la ricerca delle radici improntata al riconoscimento di quella identità nazionale che scaturisce dalla cultura popolare e dalle tradizioni popolari della gente dello Sri Lanka.
Interessante. Andare alla scoperta di culture nuove stuzzica la voglia di saperne sempre di più…

I keep silent and I wait. I am sure in a while he is going to ask me.
“What about Sri Lanka…” – here it is! I knew!! – “it is part of India?”
Gosh. I knew. There is always someone who ask me this question – silly question! Unfortunately in Italy geography has disappeared from schools since a while but I really can’t believe that lots of people don’t know that India is India and Sri Lanka is Sri Lanka! Two different countries!!
For sure there might be some similarities, more or less as we have similarities with our “cousins” on the other side of the Alps! It’s clear that for the geographical position there might be some exchange of cultural elements. But these elements have gradually changed during the process of adaptation. So Sri Lanka is one thing. India is another thing.
A very interesting book about this topic is Aspects of Sinhalese Culture of Martin Wickramasinghe, one of the most important authors of Sri Lanka. The search for roots is a central theme in his works on the culture and life of the people of Sri Lanka.
