Murielle, welcome to Daily Pinner. It’s a real pleasure to interview a writer for kids. You define your literary genres on Goodreads as Children’s, Young Adult and Contemporary. When did you decide to be an author for kids and youngsters and why?
Writing childrens’ books has always been my first priority as a writer. I’ve been writing since grade school, so my first stories were geared to children. The older I grew, the older my characters became. Children’s books have always appealed to me because of the magical elements attached to a lot of them. I only wish I had the talent to be an illustrator too, but I’ll leave that too the experts.

You write on your bio – always on Goodreads: “My favourite activity as a primary teacher was reading aloud to the students.” How important do you think is that for your pupils?
As an elementary school teacher I’ve been exposed to a lot of fiction for young readers, whether it be kindergarten or middle school. I’ve witnessed the joy on the children’s faces when you read them a book they can relate to. If a book makes them laugh, ask questions and want to read more, then it helps them become better learners. Reading aloud to them teaches them how pleasurable and entertaining reading can be and nurtures a lifelong love of reading. Reading to children is of upmost importance.

I personally owe everything to kids’ authors, without you all I would not started reading and my life would have been less lively. Does a children’s author feel this kind of “responsibility”?
Yes, you have a great responsibility as a children’s writer to write about the things that help them become caring and responsible adults.

You write also for young adults. What is the main difference between a plot for kids and a plot for young adults?
I think the plotting is similar for all ages; it might be more detailed for older children, and the subject matter more demanding, but plots require the same requirements no matter what age group.

I will turn thirty in a couple of weeks. Do you remember something in particular about your Thirties? You were an author already, weren’t you?
I was a writer at ten years old. I was more into poetry and short stories in my thirties. My children were young then and writing took a back burner for a while. I still managed to write when they were in bed, between school events, and family responsibilities. Some children stories surfaced during that period too.

Is there anything you would like to suggest to my generation, about writing and reading  – or even generally speaking?
Reading is a must if you want to improve your writing skills. Read everything you can get your hands on. With the Internet now, you have access to writing from all over the planet. Don’t be in a hurry to release your work right away. Put your writing away for a little while and read it with new eyes before sending it out.

Murielle Cyr writes for children of all ages. Besides poetry and short stories, she has written a picture book, TURTLE WISH, a middle grade/teen adventure novella, CULLOO, and a soon to be released YA novel, CATORI’S WORLDS.
When she’s not writing, she’s busy trying to get a handle on social media, practicing Tai Chi, baking cookies for her dog, reading and reviewing books, making her own natural soaps, and when the weather permits, gardening and camping.

Io ho voluto inserire l’intervista a Murielle nel mio Giubileo (TROVI QUI IL CALENDARIO AGGIORNATO DEGLI EVENTI), perché ritengo che il ruolo degli scrittori per ragazzi sia davvero importante nella vita di ogni lettore.

Murielle, benvenuta nel mio Daily Pinner. É davvero un piacere chiacchierare con un’autrice per ragazzi. Tu ti definisci su Goodreads come una scrittrice per bambini e ragazzi, oltre che di genere contemporaneo. Quando hai deciso di diventare un’autrice sia per bambini che per ragazzi, e perché?
Scrivere libri per i più giovani è sempre stata una mia priorità come scrittrice. Ho sempre scritto, sin da quanto ero alle elementari, per cui le mie prime storie erano pensate per i bambini. Man mano che diventavo grande, anche i miei personaggi crescevano. I libri per ragazzi mi hanno sempre attirata per via degli elementi magici che si possono inserire. Mi sarebbe piaciuto avere anche il talento da illustratrice, ma quello lo lascio fare agli esperti.

Sempre nella tua biografia su Goodreads leggo: “La mia attività preferita da maestra elementare era leggere a voce alta ai miei alunni.” Quanto pensi sia importante questo per i bambini?
Quando ero maestra elementare sono stata esposta a moltissima letteratura per bambini piccoli e ragazzi. Ho visto coi miei occhi la gioia nei visi dei bambini quando leggevo loro un libro in cui potevano immedesimarsi. Se un libro faceva loro ridere, fare domande o li spingeva a leggere ancora, il libro stesso aveva aiutato a rendere i bambini degli studenti migliori. Leggere a voce alta insegna ai ragazzi quanto leggere sia piacevole e divertente, e coltiva in loro l’amore per la lettura. Un amore che dura tutta la vita. Leggere ai bambini è una questione di massima importanza.

Io devo personalmente moltissimo agli scrittori per ragazzi. Senza di voi non avrei mai iniziato a leggere e la mia vita sarebbe stata più… vuota.
Come vive un autore per ragazzi questa “responsabilità”?
É vero, quella di scrivere storie che possano aiutare i ragazzi a diventare degli adulti più attenti e responsabili è una responsabilità.

Tu scrivi non solo per i più piccolini, ma anche per i ragazzi e i pre adolescenti. Qual è la differenza principale tra una trama pensata per i bambini e una per ragazzi?
Credo che la genesi di una trama sia simile per tutte le età dei destinatari; potrebbe essere più dettagliata per un libro per ragazzi, o il soggetto potrebbe richiedere più attenzione, ma in genere le trame richiedono sempre la stessa attenzione.

Io compirò trent’anni tra un mesetto. Ti ricordi qualcosa in particolare dei tuoi trent’anni? Eri già una scrittrice, eh?
Sì, io ero una scrittrice già a dieci anni. A trent’anni scrivevo più poesie e racconti brevi. I miei figli erano piccoli, e la scrittura è rimasta chiusa nel cassetto per un po’. Scrivevo per lo più dopo che li mettevo a letto o quando erano a scuola. Molte delle mie storie per bambini sono emerse proprio in quegli anni.

C’è qualcosa che vorresti suggerire alla mia generazione, sia sulla scrittura/lettura o in generale?
Leggere è una conditio sine qua non se si vuole scrivere. Leggete di tutto, mettete le vostre mani su qualunque cosa si possa leggere. Grazie a internet abbiamo accesso a qualunque tipo di scrittura proveniente da ogni parte del mondo. Non abbiate fretta di pubblicare il vostro manoscritto: mettetelo da una parte per un po’ e rileggetelo con occhi nuovi prima di pubblicarlo.

Murielle Cyr scrive per bambini di tutte le età. Oltre a poesie e racconti brevi, ha scritto un libro illustrato, TURTLE WISH, una novella per pre adolescenti, CULLOO, e presto verrà pubblicato anche un romanzo Young Adult, CATORI’S WORLDS.
Quando non scrive, Murielle è impegnata nel tentativo di gestione dei suoi social media, pratica Tai Chi, cucina biscotti per il suo cane, legge e recensisce libri, produce il suo sapone naturale, e quando il tempo lo permette si dedica al giardinaggio e va in campeggio.
