Siria: 10 Ragioni per opporsi all’intervento 

01 L’intervento in Siria avrà enormi conseguenze regionali e globali. Il conflitto si sta  già diffondendo in Libano e Turchia e potrebbe innescare una guerra regionale che coinvolgerebbe Arabia Saudita, Qatar, Iraq e Iran. Come l’ex segretario generale dell’ONU Kofi Annan ha ammesso “La Siria non è la Libia, non imploderà, esploderà al di là dei suoi confini.”

02 Nel corso degli ultimi dieci anni, la guerra al terrorismo ha drasticamente destabilizzato il Medio Oriente. L’intervento degli Stati Uniti e dei suoi alleati non ha portato altro che sangue e distruzione in Iraq e Afghanistan. Non vi è alcun motivo per credere che il risultato sarà diverso in Siria.

03 L’intervento straniero negherà al popolo siriano il diritto di determinare il proprio futuro. Si metterà la leadership dell’opposizione nelle mani delle potenze occidentali e dei loro alleati che agiranno nel loro stesso interesse.

04 Le molteplici violazioni del regime degli  Assad in materia di diritti umani non hanno preoccupato le potenze occidentali in passato. Gli Stati Uniti hanno inviato prigionieri  per interrogatori e torture in Siria come parte della “guerra globale al terrore”. Aerei militari siriani si sono uniti gli Stati Uniti ad attaccare l’Iraq nel 1991.

05 I principali alleati dell’Occidente nella intervento, in particolare l‘Arabia Saudita e Qatar, non hanno alcun interesse per la democrazia in Medio Oriente. Sono tra i regimi più autoritari della regione e hanno fatto del loro meglio per schiacciare il movimento democratico.

06 Gli Stati Uniti e gli alleati stanno già intervenendo con armi, denaro e attività segrete. All’inizio di quest’anno  Obama ha autorizzato la CIA a sostenere l’opposizione nel tentativo di rovesciare il regime di Assad. Questo può solo infiammare ciò che la Croce Rossa riconosce esistere già ora: una guerra civile.

07 Se gli Stati Uniti e la Gran Bretagna erano davvero preoccupati per la promozione della democrazia nella regione, non avrebbero fornito armi ai regimi tirannici in Arabia Saudita e Bahrain.

08 Gli Stati Uniti hanno più volte minato gli sforzi diplomatici per trovare una soluzione al conflitto. Si è per esempio chiesto il voto del Consiglio di Sicurezza ai sensi del capitolo 7, che pone le basi di un intervento militare, e ha rifiutato negoziati che includano l’Iran

09 L’intervento 2011 in Libia è  iniziato con una no-fly zone. E ‘aumentato drammaticamente il numero delle vittime; decine di migliaia di morti ne sono derivati. Lo stesso accadrà in Siria.

10 Un attacco all’Iran rimane l’obiettivo finale per gli Stati Uniti. L’intervento in Siria è il trampolino di lancio verso questo obiettivo.

Syria: 10 Reasons Why We Oppose Intervention

01 Intervention in Syria will have huge regional and global consequences. The conflict is already spreading to Lebanon and Turkey, and could spark a regional war involving Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Iraq and Iran. As former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan put it, “Syria is not Libya, it will not implode, it will explode beyond its borders.”

02 Over the last ten years the War on Terror has drastically destabilised the Middle East. The intervention of the United States and its allies brought nothing but blood and destruction to Iraq and Afghanistan. There is no reason think the outcome will be any different in Syria.

03 Foreign intervention will deny the Syrian people the right to determine their own future. It will place the opposition leadership in the hands of the western powers and their allies, who will act in their own interests.

04 Assad’s appalling record on human rights has not worried the western powers in the past. The US sent detainees for interrogation and torture to Syria as part of the “global war on terror.” Syrian warplanes also joined the US in attacking Iraq in 1991.

05 The West’s main allies in the intervention, particularly Saudi Arabia and Qatar, have no interest in democracy in the Middle East. They are among the most authoritarian regimes in the region and they have done their best to crush the democracy movement.

06 The US and its allies are already intervening with arms, money and covert action. Early this year President Obama authorised the CIA to support the opposition in trying to topple the Assad regime. This can only inflame what the Red Cross acknowledges is now a civil war.

07 If the US and UK were really concerned about promoting democracy in the region, they would not be supplying weapons to the tyrannies in Saudi Arabia and Bahrain.

08 The US has repeatedly undermined diplomatic efforts to find a solution to the conflict. It has for example demanded that the Security Council vote under Chapter 7, which set the stage for military intervention, and refused negotiations that include Iran

09 The 2011 intervention in Libya begun with a no-fly zone. It dramatically increased the rate of killing; tens of thousands died following it. The same will happen in Syria.

10 An attack on Iran remains the ultimate goal for the US. Intervention in Syria is a stepping stone toward that goal.
