First interview to an italian designer: Cinzia Rossi.Interview both in english and italian.§
Q: Starting from the beginning of your work project.
What brought you, and how, to be a fashion designers?A: Human beings have the need to express their own ideas, communicate their feelings and moods, and they, we, do it in so many ways. For me, designing and making clothes is the tool that allows me to communicate that I exist, that I have something to say and share with the rest of the world. What school path did you take in order to become what you are today?I graduated as a designer at Moda Burgo Institute, then it began a period of hard work aimed at learning the fashion business as a trainee in an atelier (studio) and then I became an assistent in an advertising agency, path that has been really useful to me because I learnt a lot but at the same time I was limited in the creative process, so I decided to try to launch my own brand in order to be creative as much as I wanted.Has fashion been your lifelong passion? have you ever "farmed" other passions?I follow with great interest art especially painting and photography. What do you feel influenced by in your collections?By real world and by the way I idealize it.
And speaking of influences, what inspires you? what do you imagine, "dream", during the most creative phase of your job?In all collections I usually start from an abstraction of the world that surrounds me, and also the most trivial experiences can help me to have fresh and new ideas.
I tend to see the phase of design and creation of a dress as a "surreal" phase, what do you feel during and after the creation of a dress?
When I design a collection I try to abstract it from the reality around me and therefore outside of the (physical) body; sometimes it happens that I think that that dress will never be worn in real life but when the dress takes shape, everything evolves to reality and that's the point I idealize the woman who chooses to buy that dress. What kind of woman you dress? How would you describe her? How do you see Cinzia Rossi's woman? The woman I see in my collections is a woman able to develop an unconventional taste, that knows how to use her ideas to communicate her individuality.Let's lighten questions. What is fashion for you? It's 'dressing up', following trends, ...?
Fashion is continuous representation of passages of time and evolution of society, it's a way to communicate: clothes represents a language, a kind of an alphabet.I do not believe in 'dressing well' if we can't communicate to the world our ideas. I see 'following trends' too cheap, I prefer who, in 'dressing phase', chooses to represent him/herself following his/her own ideas. What do you think mark the most italian fashion versus french or anglo-saxon or oriental fashion?Italian fashion has a long tradition that allows to have a competitive and considerable benefit in global market. Concept of 'Made in Italy' is well-consideres in the market and this is, without doubt, a characteristic element. And what do you think of 'Italian fashion System'? What does and doesn't work in this system?Italian fashion system, perhaps also because of the strong link to tradition, suffers from a little openness to innovation, in many situations I saw on myself some closure to those who have just started this career path.Sporadic are occasions with a happy ending because there is lack of financial groups with interest in investing in young brands, while in other countries there is greater synergy between those who have ideas and maybe even the expertise to carry them out and who has the economic capacity to finance these entrepreneurial projects.Another failure suffered by Italian fashion system is the lack of dynamism in some economic processes, I think, for example, retail: sometimes it is too heavy because of unwritten constraints that often slow down the system.Blogosphere has had in recent years, and it is still expanding, an unbelievable growth of content and great ideas. How do you think the blogosphere, along with more traditional publishing systems, may influence fashion and fashion designers?Fashion needs to communicate itself, so, mass medias and newer ones have an important role in this communication process. Blogs, in some cases, are demonstrating the ability to reach a huge audience with well-defined target. So for a designer blogs are a key resource.Do you have a favourite designers or label you watch with a more curious and heedful eye?So many, among all I prefer Prabal Gurung but also emerging designer such as Salasai.Moving to rumors. How do you see the future of your brand? Do you have expansion plans in other cities?I see a lot of hard work in my future. I have some expansion plans of course, the most advanced one I'm working on with consultants is to bring some collections in east-Europe.In the future, would you also start menswear collections? Not as CinziaRossi, but I'm working on a project for both menswear and womenswear.
