'Designed by the immaculately progressive David Chipperfield, Turner Contemporary is probably the most elegant gallery interior in Britain right now.' Waldermar Januszczak, art critic

The past weekend was perhaps the last sunny and warm one of the season for this big island of the Channel. Grossmama and Grosspapa had come to visit us for the biginning of the school, so we decided to take them to the beach for the weekend. Precisely to Margate, a small village at approximately two-three hours from London, on the coast of Kent, beyond the mouth of the Thames, towards Europe. There, just above the sea, near the harbor, in the same place where Turner was staying when he went on a visit to Margate to his beloved Mrs. Booth, stands the Turner Contemporary, modern art gallery designed by the award-winning architect David Chipperfield and recently opened to the public .
The beautiful gallery, a "must see" of our trip, which houses an interactive art workshop and that intends to be a moment of meeting between the art and the people, was hiding another beautiful and unexpected surprise: the installation "Time for Respirar" (Breathing time) by Maria Nepomuceno, a brazilian artist who uses materials, colors and techniques of South America to stage her personal view of the world and the art, based on opposing concepts such as movement and stillness, unity and division, contraction and expansion. The landscape that Maria Nepomuceno has created into the double-heigh space of the hall, with the help of ordinary people (through a series of free workshops held in the summer, during which they created baskets and wreaths of pearls), is a striking mix of materials such as rope, beads and ceramics, staging a colorful and fascinating collection of organic forms. "An imaginary environment," as the artist herself describes it, "in which people can explore the present moment." Yes, because here the visitor is invited to take part in that fantasy world and to discover the textures, sounds, colors, through its sensory experience. It is not a closed and static place, just to be observed and not to be touched as the most part of the works of art. But a story in which to take part. To the delight of adults, and especially of the children.
"Tempo para respirar" is open until the 17th of March 2013. For more info visit the Turner Contemporary: http://www.turnercontemporary.org/exhibitions/maria-nepomuceno
