Red house painters - I o Rollercoaster (1993)

(ITA) Già a partire da quest’album, Kozelek si allontana dallo slowcore di Down colorful hill per approdare verso una più classica forma di cantautorato folk. Canzoni come Katy song, Funhouse o Take me out dimostrano come i Red House Painters siano i migliori compositori di nenie acustiche dai tempi di Nick Drake e Tim Buckley. Talvolta, spuntano ancora qua e là sprazzi di acid rock, come in Strawberry hill e in Mistress (che ammicca alla psichedelia rumoristica anglosassone e di cui è presente anche una versione arrangiata unicamente al piano: probabilmente quanto di meglio il gruppo abbia mai prodotto). A differenza di altri autori buttati nel calderone “sadcore” queste canzoni hanno nei testi una parte tanto importante quanto la musica, se non di più: le parole di Kozelek sono vere e proprie poesie. Sarebbe un capolavoro, se la sua durata non fosse davvero eccessiva.

(ENG) Already from this album, Kozelek walks away from the slowcore of Down colorful hill and arrives at a more traditional form of folk songwriting. Songs like Katy song, Take me out or Funhouse show that Red House Painters are the best composers of acoustic lullabies from the times of Nick Drake and Tim Buckley. Sometimes, flashes of acid rock peep out, as in Strawberry Hill and Mistress (that nods to the Anglosaxon noisy psychedelia and that has also a piano version, probably the best song that the band has ever produced). Unlike other authors thrown into the cauldronof "sadcore", these songs have lyrics as important as the music, if not more: the words of Kozelek are real poems. It would be a masterpiece, if its duration was not really excessive.4/5
