Il Sabato mattina a Londra una tappa d'obbligo è sicuramente il mercatino di Portobello Road. Dalle prime luci del giorno piccoli banchetti pieni di oggetti di antiquariato, pezzi unici vintage e reperti del modernariato più verace, cianfrusaglie (ma tremendamente accattivanti) prendono possesso di una intera strada nel cuore di Notting Hill, il quartiere reso famoso (se già non lo era prima) dall'omonimo film (che, tra l'altro, non mi stanco mai di guardare!).
A me piace tantissimo passeggiare lungo Portobello Road, dalla stazione di Notting Hill Gate fino giù all'incrocio con Lancaster Road, adoro perdermi nelle viuzze laterali e esplorare il quartiere, sognare a occhi aperti quelle splendide casette con i portoni colorati che oggi sono così ambiti da aver fatto salire le quotazioni immobiliari della zona fino alle stelle.
Negli anni ho selezionato i miei preferiti, quei posticini davvero unici che non manco mai di visitare ogni volta che il Sabato mattina presto (perché dopo c'è troppa ressa e non mi godo la mia passeggiata) mi capita di girovagare tra Westbourne Grove e Ladbroke Grove.
Prima di tutto Alice's. L'insegna rossa del negozio è riconoscibilissima a distanza, non ci si può davvero sbagliare. Ad accoglierti una distesa di porcellana inglese con decorazioni floreali, natalizie o a tema a seconda del periodo dell'anno. C'è di tutto: tazze e teiere, piattini, alzatine (una più bella dell'altra), porta fette tostate (molto british) e cimeli di vario genere. Il negozio merita una visita senza dubbio ma è bene avventurarsi con cautela o si rischia di rompere qualcosa!
Poco più avanti c'è il negozio scozzese Highland Store che vende le coperte di lana più calde e deliziose che abbia mai provato. Ne porto sempre a casa una perché non so davvero resistere a quelle fantasie così chic e seducenti! All'interno maglioni, sciarpe, giacche in tweed da fare invidia a Carlo (si, proprio lui!) e cappe così avvolgenti da scaldare anche gli inverni più rigidi. Tutto direttamente dalle Highlands, tutto primissima qualità!
Qua e la venditori di vecchie scatole di latta con l'effige della Regina Elisabetta negli anni d'oro e piatti di porcellana raffiguranti la Famiglia Reale al completo, argenteria vera o quasi.
Arrivando in fondo a Portobello Road si può deviare in Blenheim Crescent per una capatina da Books for Cooks, The Notting Hill Travel Bookshop (che ha ispirato la bottega di William Thacker) o da Amplified, dove vendono le magliette più rock di tutta Londra.
Se poi in tutto questo girovagare si è creato uno spazio per un break goloso ci sono tantissimi posti pronti a soddisfare anche gli appetiti più tenaci: lungo Portobello Road tra una Tea Room e il negozio di arredi col portone blu c'è Hummingbird Bakery che sforna cupcakes freschi e variamente decorati praticamente a tutte le ore, immancabili Starbucks, Gail's Bakery e pub più o meno tipici. Per una merenda fatata in un'atmosfera un po' fiabesca e un po' onirica c'è Biscuit Boutique Icing Cafè: nel periodo di Natale il caffè si riempie di presepi, alberelli variamente decorati e tante leccornie per rendere più dolce l'attesa del giorno più bello dell'anno!

On Saturday morning in London a must is definitely the Portobello Road market. From the first light of day small banquets full of antiques, vintage and unique pieces of modern art finds more true, junk (but terribly attractive) take possession of an entire street in the heart of Notting Hill, the neighborhood made famous (if not already was first) from the film (which, by the way, I never get tired of watching!).
I really like strolling along Portobello Road, from Notting Hill Gate Station down to the junction with Lancaster Road, I love getting lost in the side streets and explore the neighborhood, daydreaming those beautiful houses with colored doors that are now so fields to have driven up the real estate prices in the area to the stars.
Over the years, I have selected my favorites, those really unique niches that I never fail to visit every time on Saturday (very early) morning (because in late morning there is too much crowd and I can't enjoy my walk) I happen to wander between Westbourne Grove and Ladbroke Grove.
First of all Alice's. The red sign shop is recognizable at a distance, you can not really go wrong. To welcome you an expanse of English porcelain with floral decorations, or Christmas theme depending on the time of year. There are countless cups and teapots, saucers, backsplashes (one more beautiful than the other), port toasted slices (very British) and relics of various kinds. The shop is worth a visit no doubt but it is good venture with caution or you risk breaking something!
A little further on there is a shop that sells Scottish wool goods. The Highland Store wool blankets are the warmest and most delicious I have ever tried. I always carry one home because I can not really stand up to those fantasies so chic and seductive! Inside sweaters, scarves, tweed jackets and wrap-around blankets so warm to face even the coldest winters. Everything from the Highlands, all top quality!
Here and there sellers of old tin cans bearing the effigy of Queen Elizabeth in the golden years and porcelain plates depicting the Royal Family, real silverware or nearly so.
Coming at the end of Portobello Road, you can turn in Blenheim Crescent for a trip to Books for Cooks or Amplified, where they sell the shirts more rock in London.
And if all this wandering has created a space for a delicious snack, there are plenty of places ready to satisfy the appetites of the most tenacious. Along Portobello Road between a Tea Room and a shop furniture with blue door there is Hummingbird Bakery that bakes fresh cupcakes and variously decorated practically around the clock, ever-present Starbucks, Gail's Bakery, pubs more or less typical. For a snack a little fairy in a 'fairy-tale and a little dream' is Biscuit Icing Boutique Cafe: over Christmas this cafe is filled with cribs, variously decorated trees and lots of goodies to smooth the expectation of best day of the year!
