Santo Versace Meets IED Milan Fashion Students

Last week we had the wonderful opportunity to meet Santo Versace, President of Gianni Versace Spa who came to visit IED Milan. During this meeting we covered alot of the history of the maison Versace, starting from the beginning in which Gianni's mother, who was from Calabria, a southern region of Italy, was prohibited by her family to become a doctor so she decided to open a tailor shop in the 40's so Gianni grew up between seams and lace. In 1972 he did his first collection and later on an enterpreneur from Lucca, called Gianni to design a collection for him, and Santo, who was already in charge of the commercial/economical part, asked him to pay Gianni 4 million Italian Liras, which was the same salary given to Walter Albini, the first italian designer of pret-a-porter. The collection was a big success so not only he was paid that money but he was also given a black beatle car. After that we talk about the great relation between Gianni Versace and celebrities, for example Don Johnson from Miami Vice, Mike Tyson and Elton John were huge fans of Versace.  Apart from the celebrities, he was also the first designer to invent and use the top models such as Naomi Campbell, Eva Herzigova, Cindy Crawford, Claudia Schiffer ect. because before they were only used for photo shooting, so he decided to make them walk in his runway shows and it was a big success. The tragic death of Gianni, almost 15 years ago, shocked not only his family but the entire fashion system and it was a very difficult time for the business. Donatella was studying university in Florence when she joined the company and it was a really tough time for her, like always when there is not a gradual transition between one designer to another, like with Sarah Burton and Alexander McQueen. Santo Versace explained us how Donatella started to work and think like Gianni in order to respect and to keep the DNA of the company alive. About Haute Couture shows today, Santo said that are needed to keep the brand on a high level and to sell more garments, shoes, bags, parfumes ect. and that high street retailer such as Zara and H&M help fashion to grow. Of course Santo also talked about the importance of fashion, Made in Italy and Italian quality, creativity and talents of our designers and products which together with design, has changed the image of Italy around the world.

La settimana scorsa abbiamo avuto la bellissima opportunità di incontrare Santo Versace, presidente della Gianni Versace Spa, che è venuto a visitare lo IED a Milano. Durante l'incontro abbiamo parlato molto della storia della maison Versace, iniziando da quando alla mamma di Gianni, che viene dalla Calabria, fu proibito di diventare una dottoressa e scelse di aprire una sartoria negli anni '40 e quindi Gianni crebbe tra pizzi e merletti. Nel 1972 creò la sua prima collezione e più avanti fu contattato da un impreditore di Lucca per disegnare una collezione e Santo, che già all'epoca si occupò della parte economico/commerciale, chiese 4 milioni di vecchie lire per Gianni, la stessa cifra che guadagnò Walter Albini, il primo stilista italiano. La collezione ebbe un enorme successo e non solo Gianni ricevette il denaro ma anche una beatle nera. Dopodichè abbiamo parlato dell'ottimo rapporto che Gianni aveva con le celebrity come ad esempio Don Johnson di Miami Vice, Mike Tyson ed Elton John che erano dei grandissimi fan di Versace. Oltre alle celebrity, è stato anche il primo stilista ad inventare e autilizzare le top model come Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Eva Herzigova, Claudia Schiffer ecc. perchè prima venivano utilizzate solo per i servizi fotografici, e lui decise di farle sfilare in passerella durante le sue sfilate e fu un enorme successo. La tragica morte di Gianni, avvenuta circa 15 anni fa, ha scioccato non solo la famiglia ma l'intero fashion system ed è stato un periodo molto difficile per l'azienda. Donatella frequentava l'università a Firenze quando è entrata a far parte dell'azienda ed è stato un periodo molto difficile per lei, come sempre accade quando non c'è un cambio graduale fra un designer e l'altro, come nel caso di Sarah Burton e Alexander McQueen. Santo Versace ci ha spiegato come Donatella ha cominciato a lavorare e a pensare come Gianni, in modo da rispettare e mantenere il DNA dell'azienda. Per quanto riguarda l'alta moda oggi, Santo dice che serve a mantenere alto il livello del brand e a far vendere più abbigliamento, borse, vestiti, scarpe, profumi ecc. e che i retailer di fast fashion come Zara o H&M servono a far crescere la moda. Ovviamente Santo ha anche parlato dell'importanza della moda e del Made in Italy, della qualità, della creatività e del talento degli stilisti e dei prodotti italiani che insieme al design hanno cambiato l'immagine dell'Italia nel mondo.
