What's wrong with poor Charlie?

The Italian translation of Charlie is Carlo (or Carletto).It's interesting to find out how, in both languages, these two names have got a bad meaning, for different reasons.In English, to be "a right Charlie" means being a foolish and not very bright person. Do you know why? No problem, the Girlfriend will tell you. Apparently it's rhyming slang from a chap called Charlie Smirke that used to be a famous jockey in the 1940s. Smirke rhymes with "berk", therefore you can easily come to the obvious conclusions.And that's not it, as "Charlie" rhymes with Bob Marley and it became a slang for "cocaine" too.Not a very happy name, is it?And in Italian it's pretty much the same story, poor Charlie.According to a common stereotype the name Carletto is often associated to a simpleton, foolish person. In Italian we have another saying. "fare le cose alla carlona"("to do things Carlo's way") which means "to do things in a careless, unpretentious way".The Carlo mentioned here is actually King Charles the Great, known for never giving up his rough habits, even after being crowned Emperor.Never mind if you live in Italy or in the UK then, being called Charlie apparently is never a good omen.
E' interessante scoprire come sia Charlie sia Carlo (o Carletto) abbiano assunto un'accezione negativa, per motivi diversi.In Inglese "to be a right Charlie" significa essere una persona un po' sprovveduta, uno sciocco.Non sapete perche'? No problem, ve lo spiega la Girlfriend.E' tutto merito del famoso Cockney rhyming slang gia' citato nel blog e del cognome di un tale, Charlie Smirke, celebre fantino negli anni quaranta, che fa rima con "berk" (fesso).Non solo, ma sempre per lo rhyming slang, "Charlie" ha assunto il significato di "cocaina",facendo rima con Bob Marley. A voi trarre le piuttosto ovvie conclusioni.E anche in Italiano e' di nuovo la stessa storia, povero Carletto.Per uno stereotipo diffuso, il nome Carletto e' associato ad una persona bonaria e sempliciotta. Un fesso in pratica. E anche noi abbiamo un detto famoso, "fare le cose alla carlona"che significa fare le cose senza cura, senza pretese.Qui il Carlo in questione e' Carlo Magno, celebre per non aver mai abbandonato le sue abitudini grossolane anche dopo essere stato incoronato Imperatore.Che si viva in Italia o nel Regno Unito quindi, chiamarsi Carletto non pare essere mai un buon segno.
