Change is difficult: ask Nefertiti
There are many mysteries hidden in the history of Egypt’s pharaohs. A favorite is what happened to the beautiful queen Nefertiti. Although ancient records seem to show that Nefertiti and her husband were well beloved by many of their people, the body of the queen has never been found and she has all but been erased from many historical references.
Modern Egyptologists have put forth the theory that Nefertiti was dispensed of by enemies of her husband. You see, Nefertiti’s husband, originally named Amenhotep IV, had a revelation. He proclaimed to his people that instead of worshipping Amun, they should now worship a new god he called Aten. Along with that bombshell, Amenhotep IV changed his name to Akenhaten, moved the capital city, and changed many other facets of Egyptian civilization that had lasted through the ages. As you might imagine, many people in Egypt, especially those who fervently worshipped Amun, were passionately against all of these changes. Theories have even surfaced that Nefertiti was wiped from history because of the legacy she and her husband left behind. Indeed, shortly after the couple were deceased, everything returned to the way it had been, and this whole chapter of Egyptian history was nearly lost forever.
As a marketer, there are two ways we can look at the story of Nefertiti and Akenhaten. On the one hand, we can gain inspiration. While we might overturn the way things have been done at our company for a few decades, nothing we do is as wide-ranging as overturning how an entire society works (most likely). Akenhaten and Nefertiti truly believed they were leading their people onto a necessary path of improvement, and while it was not easy, and while they knew they would encounter plenty of opposition, they proceeded anyway, bravely, passionately, and without second thoughts.
There is another lesson that can be garnered from this chapter of history too, however. Sometimes, an idea that seems great to one person can actually be revolting to many other people. The more that idea is forced upon the masses, the more resentful they will become and the less likely you are to see your proposed changes become permanent fixtures. Even if you are sure, with every fiber of your being, that the change you are proposing will make everything easier and more effective, you must make sure that everyone around you is also on board. The more significant the changes, the more essential it is to have allies who will support your ideas and help promote them.
There is an art, when you are a marketer, in knowing how much or how little to push a concept. The scent of success always lures you to try something new, but the risk of failure is also palpable. While you may not be removed from all history books, you may find yourself disdained at your company, which can affect your career going forward. Moreover, if you push for a major change and the results are poor, your credibility can be forever damaged, which is somewhat similar to being wiped from the history books.
How have you approached situations where you want to see a new idea take shape or where you want to see major changes occur? We’d love to hear your thoughts!
