#Election2012: #Obama e #Romney, la storia di due Americhe #usa2012

Oggi è il giorno che, sembrerebbe, abbiamo aspettato per un'eternità. Finalmente, dopo quello che è stato un flusso senza fine di politica, dalle pubblicità ai rally alle convention, tornando alle pubblicità, tutti cosparsi di momenti di gloria e un potenziale enorme, gaffe straordinarie e strategie tarate per stato, oggi arriviamo al cuore di quel che fa funzionare il nostro paese.
Oggi, per la 57sima volta, affermiamo il principio unicamente americano del governo fatto dal, di, e per il Popolo. E' un giorno importante, un giorno pieno di incertezze sul futuro immediato, e almeno un tocco di rispetto solenne per il passato glorioso.
Vale sempre la pena ricordare, mentre contempliamo file per votare di 6 ore negli stati chiave, o lunghe ricerche per un seggio nel Nord-Est stravolto dall'uragano, che molti sono morti e molti sono ancora in pericolo, per preservare e proteggere il nostro diritto di esercitare questo diritto di popolo libero per un leader liberamente eletto.
Per ogni ciclo elettorale vengono scritte storie e leggende, da esaminare con il senno di poi. Queste elezioni mi sembrano essere la storia di una discussione nella politica del corpo, tra la testa e il cuore. Due organi distintamente differenti, spesso in contrasto anche allo stesso momento.
In queste elezioni la Testa, l'intelletto, che viene da Destra, sembrerebbe essere a favore dello sfidante. E perché no? Mitt Romney si è presentato a noi come un uomo d'affari molto capace, il "creatore di posti di lavoro", la figura paterna che arriva a sistemare il casino, se non creato, allora peggiorato dalle lamentele infantili dei suoi alleati Liberali dal cuore sanguinante al Congresso.
"Obama ha avuto i suoi 4 anni", dice la Testa. "Aveva promesso di sistemare le cose, e ci sono ancora persone senza lavoro. Persino il mio posto di lavoro potrebbe sparire domani. Mitt è un uomo d'affari. Saprà lui come togliere dal rosso il mio conto in banca."
Il problema per il Cuore, l'emozionale, sanguinante Cuore del Centro e della Sinistra, è che questo è davvero un argomento puntuale, a dirla tutta. Lasciando da parte per un momento i buchi lasciati in questa teoria da mesi di ricerca, più dibattiti di quanti se ne possano ricordare, e dalle dichiarazioni sbagliate e le correzioni dello stesso Candidato, l'idea che queste elezioni saranno influenzate solo dall'economia è in qualche modo confortante. E' semplice e facile da ricordare, ed è perfetta per la mentalità da striscione in cui siamo caduti. Se si tratta di decidere le rate di chi verranno diminuite, e chi avrà una miglior possibilità di proteggere i propri eredi dall'IRS dopo la morte, allora Romney è l'uomo che fa per voi.
Quello che il Cuore non può facilmente mettere da parte, tuttavia, sono tutte le altre questioni su cui questa campagna si è concentrata. Dal problema dei senza fissa dimora all'immigrazione, ai diritti della donna di fare scelte riguardanti la propria salute, alla sanità in generale. Le Arti, le infrastrutture, il riscaldamento globale, queste sono tutte questioni su cui le opinioni espresse dal team Romney/Ryan sembrano, almeno per il Cuore, essere retrograde all'estremo.
Il Cuore ci dice, è importante, certo, che i fondamentali dell'economia siano sistemati, ma l'intelletto del Cuore ci dice che sta già avvenendo. Nonostante le predizioni grigie della Destra, l'economia sta migliorando e lo ha fatto stabilmente negli ultimi tre anni, e sembra che continuerà a farlo anche da ora in avanti.
Il Cuore ci dice che queste elezioni sono incentrate su ciò che è giusto. E' giusto lasciare il social compact fuori dalla discussione? E' giusto voler piazzare giudici attivisti alla Corte Suprema per rovesciare 40 anni di libertà di scelta sull'aborto? E' giusto voler vietare costituzionalmente che due persone dello stesso sesso possano provare gli alti e i bassi di una vita insieme come coppia sposata, con tutti i diritti e i benefici correlati? E' giusto ignorare la prova della tempesta mostro della scorsa settimana, che sottolinea i danni che continuiamo a fare al pianeta? Dovremmo riesumare l'idea di mettere in pericolo le carriere di gay e lesbiche nel caso decidano di rivelare i loro gusti sessuali? Il Cuore dice no.
il Cuore pensa che sia giusto investire denaro generato dai risparmi di due guerre concluse, dalla attenta regolazione degli sprechi e delle evasioni nel governo, e da una altrettanto attenta revisione della legislazione sulle tasse, cose come educazione, infrastrutture ed energia verde. Sentiamo che le Arti e gli studi umanistici meritino il supporto del popolo. Sentiamo che le donne dovrebbero guadagnare, dollaro per dollaro, gli stessi stipendi come i loro colleghi uomini, e non pensiamo che sia il caso di far tornare indietro l'orologio su contraccezione e immigrazione.
Le elezioni di oggi sono una storia di due parti di noi. Il risultato dipenderà dalla scelta di ascoltare la Testa conservatrice, o il Cuore liberale. I risultati a breve!

Elections 2012: Obama and Romney, a tale of two Americas
Today is the day for which, it seems, we have waited an eternity. Finally, after what seems to have been an endless stream of politics, from ads, to rallies, to conventions, and back to ads again, all strewn with moments of glory and enormous potential, leavened with extraordinary gaffes, journeys down arcane side streets of policy talking points, and swing state strategies, today we get to the heart of what makes our country work.
Today, for something like the 57th time, we are asserting the uniquely American principle of government by, of, and for the People. It's an important day, a day filled with uncertainties about the immediate future, and at least a touch of solemn reverence for glories past.
It's always worth remembering, as we contemplate 6 hour voting lines in the swing states, or long searches for a polling place in the storm ravaged Northeast, that many have died, indeed many are still in harm's way, to preserve and protect our right to exercise this right of a free people to a freely elected leadership.
In every election cycle, stories and legends are written, to be examined later with the gift of hindsight. This election seems to me to be the tale of an argument in the body politic, between the head and the heart. Two distinctly different organs, often at odds with each other, even in the same moment.
In this election the Head, the intellect, coming from the Right, would seem to argue for the challenger. And why not? Mitt Romney has presented himself to us as the capable business man, the "job creator", the father figure arriving to fix the mess, if not created, then worsened by the childish flailing of the misguided incumbent and his bleeding-heart Liberal allies in Congress.
"Obama's had his four years", says the Head. "He promised he'd fix it, and there are still people without jobs. Heck, even my job could be gone tomorrow. Mitt's a business man. He'll know how to get my retirement account back into the black".
The problem for the Heart, the emotional, bleeding Heart of the Center and the Left, is that this is indeed a cogent argument, on the face of it. Leaving aside for the moment the various holes blown in this theory by months of research, more debates than you can remember, and by the Candidate's own misstatements and restatements, the idea that this election would be all about the economy is, in some ways a comfort. It's simple and easy to remember, and it fits the bumper sticker mentality we've fallen into. If it's about whose marginal tax rates will go down, and who will have a better shot at protecting their heirs from the IRS after they die, then Romney's your man.
What the Heart can't so easily put aside, however, are all of the other issues upon which this campaign has turned. From homelessness to immigration, to a woman's right to her own healthcare choices, to healthcare in general. The Arts, infrastructure, global warming, these are all issues upon which the opinions expressed by the Romney/Ryan ticket seem, to the Heart at least, to be regressive in the extreme.
The Heart tells us, it's important, sure, for the fundamentals of the economy to be fixed, but the Heart's intellect tells us that that is happening. Despite dire predictions from the Right, the economy is improving, has been, steadily, for three years, and looks like it will continue to do so moving ahead.
The Heart tells us that this is an election about what's right. Is it right to leave the social compact out of the discussion? Is it right to want to place activist judges on the Supreme Court to overturn 40 years of freedom of choice on abortion? Is it right to want to constitutionally ban two people of the same sex from enjoying the ups and downs of life together as a married couple, with all of the rights and benefits attendant thereupon? Is it right to ignore the evidence of last week's monster storm that underlines the damage we are continuing to inflict on the planet? Shall we bring back the idea of putting gay and lesbian service people in peril of their careers if they reveal who they are? The Heart, I would argue, says no.
The Heart thinks it is right to invest monies generated by the savings of two wars finished, by the careful regulation of fraud and waste in the government, and by a careful revision of the tax code, into things like education, infrastructure and green energy. We feel the Arts and the Humanities deserve public support. We feel like women should make, dollar for dollar, the same salaries as their male colleagues, and we don't think we should turn back the clock on contraception and immigration.
Today's election is indeed a tale of two sides of us. The outcome will depend on whether we listen to our conservative Head, or to our liberal Heart. Results, to follow!
