Notte da brividi al Wells Fargo Center di Philadelphia dove i 76ers, in occasione della gara contro gli Washington Wizards (persa nettamente ma poco importa…). hanno ritirato il numero 3 di Allen Iverson e lo hanno sollevato insieme agli altri grandi della storia della franchigia, esattamente in mezzo tra la 10 di Maurice Cheeks e la 34 di Charles Barkley. Al palazzo oltre 20mila persone, tutti o quasi con la maglia numero 3 di quello scricciolo venuto dalla Virginia via Georgetown che dalla stagione 1996-97 ha incarnato lo spirito della città dell’amore fraterno. The Answer si era ritirato ufficialmente lo scorso ottobre (volendo anche molto prima…) ma i 76ers hanno voluto celebrarlo in una serata speciale, rendere omaggio a quello che tutti definiscono ‘pound per pound’ (rispetto alla taglia fisica) il più grande si sempre, uno capace, nell’anno di grazia 2001, di vincere MVP dell’All Star Game e MVP stagionale, e trascinare Phila alla finale NBA, persa 4-1 contro i grandi Lakers di Shaq e Kobe, ma con una vittoria epica in gara 1 allo Staples Center.
Quello che sorprende è come tutti i giocatori di ieri ma anche di oggi, che sono riusciti brevemente a giocare con o contro di lui, gli esprimono un rispetto e una devozione senza eguali, inaspettati considerando il personaggio, controverso, fuori dagli schemi, oltre le regole. Larry Brown, il SUO coach, lo ha ringraziato, il neo commissioner Adam Silver lo ha definito il simbolo di una generazione, la cerimonia è stata condotta da Pat Croce, il SUO proprietario ai tempi di quei Sixers. Tutti i giocatori della NBA di oggi hanno ribadito tramite i social network la loro devozione a The Answer.
