The birthday of a famous Italian cartoons: Calimero

Among the many important birthdays and anniversaries that we are celebrating this year in Italy, we can also remember a character that was not a symbol of the “classical” history, but it was the friend of the children who watched the Carosello. It has become, despite being a cartoon, a character of  the popular culture. When my parents were children, the channel Rai - the national channel- it was the only network to broadcast its programs on the Italian television. The concept of the commercial television was only dawn.
There was a dedicated transmission for the commercials ( it was called Carosello) in the early evening which broadcast the short films that could be called more works of art that simple commercial messages. The custom was " After the Carosello the kids go to sleep" and the rule was religiously respected by all. Some actors, the dubbers, the  directors, and the employees - who became the great professionals of  the Italian cinema -  worked to realise  those short films. Some characters - that still directly or indirectly are part of our popular culture – have been born from those first beautiful commercials.
What birthday we celebrate this year? The birthday of Calimero. I would like to introduce you this chick with an shell of the egg on its head. It was always sad because it was small and dirty. Calimero was the testimonial of the detergent Ava: after becoming dirty because it has fallen in the mud, it returns clean.
Calimero also arrived on the Japanese TV and it was aired in Italy with about 290 commercials. What is its recurring sentence uttered with the sad face? "All they have it with me because I’m small and black: it is an injustice, however," Calimero was often accompanied by Priscilla, a female chick all yellow.
Who is Calimero? This chick is the son of the Cesira chicken and the rooster Galleroni.  Its brothers are born all yellow. Originally it is yellow but the shell of the egg on its head doesn’t allow it to see where it walks. So it falls into the mud and it becomes dirty.
Its mother no longer recognizes it. Poor Calimero! Fortunately Olandesina (which is a the  metaphor of the good fairy) cleans Calimero  in a tub of water with the detergent,  Calimero-always with its shell of edge on its head - returns to its original appearance. This chick was born in 1963 and this year it has 50 years old! Happy birthday!

Fra i vari importanti compleanni ed anniversari che si festeggiano quest’anno in Italia possiamo ricordare anche un personaggio che non fu un simbolo della storia ma che è stato il compagno dei bambini che guardavano il carosello ed è diventato, pur essendo un cartone animato, un personaggio della cultura popolare. Quando i miei genitori erano piccoli la Rai , ovvero la televisione nazionale italiana, era l’unica rete che trasmetteva i suoi programmi sulla televisione. Il concetto di tv commerciale non era che agli albori. Per gli spot pubblicitari vi era una vera e propria trasmissione in primissima serata che trasmetteva dei cortometraggi che potremmo definire più delle piccole opere d’arte che semplici messaggi commerciali. L’uso era : “ Dopo carosello i bambini vanno a  dormire” e la regola veniva rispettata religiosamente da tutti. Per quei cortometraggi lavorarono attori,  doppiatori, registi e addetti vari che divennero e che già erano grandi professionisti del cinema italiano. Ebbene da quei primi bellissimi spot sono nati dei personaggi che ancora oggi direttamente o indirettamente fanno parte della nostra cultura popolare. Dunque chi festeggiamo quest’anno? Calimero. Permettetemi di presentare questo pulcino con un guscio di uovo rovesciato sulla testa che era sempre triste perché si sentiva piccolo e nero. Calimero era il testimonial del detersivo Ava: dopo essersi sporcato cadendo nel fango con il detersivo riusciva a ritornare bianco. Calimero sbarcherà anche su tv giapponesi ed andrà in onda in Italia con circa 290 spot pubblicitari. La sua frase ricorrente detta con il viso triste? “Tutti ce l’hanno con me perché sono piccolo e nero: è un’ingiustizia però” Calimero era spesso affiancato da Priscilla, la pulcina del cuore tutta gialla. Chi è Calimero? Questo pulcino è figlio della gallina Cesira e del gallo Galleroni, i suoi fratelli nati sono tutti bianchi. Originariamente anche lui è bianco ma il guscio di uovo che ha sulla testa gli impedisce di vedere dove cammina e cade nel fango diventando e sporcandosi tutto: per questo motivo la sua mamma non lo riconosce più. Povero Calimero! Fortunatamente l’intervento dell’Olandesina ( che è un po’ la metafora della buona fata) lo ripulisce in una tinozza di acqua e Calimero, sempre con il suo guscio in testa ritorna al suo aspetto originario. Il pulcino nacque nel 1963 e quest’anno quindi spegnerà le sue 50 candeline!
